@@MikeV8652 It certainly is. What I would like to know is why whatever missionary it was that created the written Kiribati language chose to represent the sound "s" with the letters "ti".
@nathanielbrinkworth70694 жыл бұрын
@@erikwahlstrom976 the story goes like this: the man who translated the bible had a broken 's' key on his typewriter. So because depending on dialect 'tu' can sometimes be said as 'su', he decided that 'ti' could be 'si'. Later, after he received a new typewriter, he changed all word in the bible referring to jesus with a 'ti' ( or tu which can make an s sound too) to be spelled with an 's'. That's why its iesu ( jesus) and not ietu. I hope that made sense! TL;DR a broken s key on a typewriter is responsible.

Anyways, there is an ainang called Tarawa and it comes from Tarawa, Kiribati. I know one of my uncle’s family has its origins in Kiribati. On my island, we have a fish that you catch from the deep parts of the ocean. It’s a very oily fish that will make you poop orange oil if you eat too much lol. Well people from Kiribati (I was told they were exiles) came and taught my people how to catch it. They called it _te ika ni beka_ (the fish of poop) Which is why the name of it in my language is _teikanepek_ .

The prime meridian divides the earth into west and east hemisphere, so any country it passes through will have a portion in each hemisphere, for example England. The equator divides the world into north and south hemisphere, so any country through which the equator passes would have a portion in each hemisphere, for example brazil. This country Kiribati is perhaps the only country on earth through which both the prime meridian and the equator pass through, hence it lies in the north and south hemisphere due to the equator and east and west hemisphere due to the prime meridian. Hence, it lies in all 4 hemispheres.

For those who are interested in Gilbertese (Kiribati/taetae ni Kiribati): /t/ is lenited and assibilated before /i/. So /ti/ is pronounced as [si]. As Barby already said, the name Kiribati comes from Gilberts and since the language lacks a lot of English consonants, they had to substitute some parts to make the name fit the phonological and phonotactical constraints. /g/ > /k/, /ɪ/ > /i/, /l/ > /ɾ/, /b/ > /p/, /ɚ/ > /a/, /ts/ > /s/ and /ɾ/ isn't allowed at the end of a syllable so an /i/ is added (while the /i/ at the end isn't actually pronounced): [gɪlbɚts] becomes [kiɾipas]

So why is the B in Kiribati still pronounced as B and not P?
@dogdoggddog2 ай бұрын
@@killersg.8290 According to the Wikipedia page for the Gilbertese language, /p/ tends to become voiced between vowels and sometimes at the beginning of words too. When voiced, the /p/-sound becomes [b]. If that's the most common way that that sound gets expressed, it makes sense to transcribe it as . As to why it isn't simply analyzed as /b/ to begin with, I don't know enough about Gilbertese to say. I suspect it may be a way of maintaining consistency, since all the other stop consonants in Gilbertese are voiceless.

For our (Kiribati flag) it has a meaning. The frigate bird indicates that we are voyagers/travellers and that we are an independent nation. The sun waves/flames are 33 in number ( showing the Number of atolls in Kiribati) and the 3 blue/white waves indicate the 3 main island chains explained in the video. What the color indicates is unknown to me, but some say they used the red blue and white to show respect to Great Britain, and the yellow is just a Kiribati addition.

@Geography Now, Thank you! This the most info about Kiribati I've heard in 5 years, after learning of its existence. That is not too America-centric. You get my 10th like ever, & after about 2 years (I think), a new subscriber. Can't wait for Pitcairn, Niue , & Tuvalu. ;-)

Caulifla San - Because they shouldn't, or North Korea should have been done already. He says he's following some sort of Alphabetical order but really he's not. North Korea should be under N if he's going by commen names or D if he's going under official names. Under K for simply "Korea" is just nonsense.
@ghrtfhfgdfnfg7 жыл бұрын
+RS 7 He may have made an exception for Korea, which I don't find to be a particularly big deal
@zamiranirvana17767 жыл бұрын
It's because he's going by K alphabetically, But N comes before S, Korea (North) Korea(South)
@droidroot22737 жыл бұрын
RS 7 North Korea and South Korea aren't their real names, that's just what we call them. Their real names are "The Democratic People's Republic of Korea" and "The Republic of Korea". So it does make sense to include them under K
@RS-hh3et7 жыл бұрын
Zamira Nirvana - The countries aren't called korea and don't begin with K..that's the point! If he's going by commen names like he did with China (People's Republic of China) then he should go with the common names North Korea and South Korea that almost everyone in the world uses. And if he's not then go by the official names DPRK and ROP. It's not hard to understand. Either way would make sense and be acceptable but not K for simply "korea"

"Makin Atoll-little more than sand, trees, and a small Japanese military base. Miller's reconnaissance team landed there almost a week ago. Since then-we've heard nothing. The waiting's over, we're going in. For all we know they're already dead. If what little we know about the Japanese is true, it might be better if they are." - Sgt Roebuck

Along with the many Kiribati civilians who were killed and suffered during the Japanese invasion and occupation. 17 New Zealand coast watchers and radio coms operators. (military intel, listening and watching posts.) Some based on Makin Atoll. Plus 5 other NZ civilians were beheaded by the Japanese on Tarawa during their occupation. According to eye witness accounts. They meet their deaths with courage.
