I’ve always had this fascination with these tiny island nations in Oceania ever since I visited Hawaii. Hawaii is cool, but I don’t think you really get the authentic island experience when everything is so tourist-y. Now enter these tiny island nations that go completely unknown by most of the rest of the world; there’s pristine beaches, coral reefs, islands to explore, and rich culture somewhere here, the only issue is well… trying to get there in the first place.

I am Tongan and the name Kongatapu is the same as Tongatapu the main island in Tonga. Tonga means south and tapu means forbidden/secret/no etc. The word falekaupule in Tongan is basically 3 different words fale (house) kau (members) pulr (leaders)

As someone who wants to visit every country in the world one day Tuvalu is really high on my list. You seem very sweet and warm people and I would love learning how you guys live. The islands look very exotic for me since I'm from Europe, beautiful to see. The fact the country is very hard to visit because of the limited flights, small space, being far and very far apart spread and the limited hotels, I only find it more fun and adventureous to visit it. The fact you guys are welcoming to visitors to stay because the hotelrooms are very limited only shows how guest free and warm you are. I think Tuvalu is my favorite Polynesian country and I really hope to visit it one day.

Sailed on the postal ship for a few days around the atolls there, rode on a motorbike with a local on Vaitapu to feed his pigs, shared drinks with a weight-lifting champ on Funafuti, visited a family with a captive sea turtle, and watched the flying fish glide across the waves in front of our stern. Also, I hear half the population has diabetes due to importing foods they didn’t evolve to eat regularly.

Hey, I've been there, to Funafuti. The Pandanus fruit was interesting, the coconuts were good, the crabs were great and the coconut crabs were amazing. I remember one of the days I was there, it was raining really heavily and I had to go out to get some fishing line for something. I could have waited until the rain stopped, but my clothes were due for a wash anyway. The path I took from where we were staying to the shops, I ran both ways about 380m, brought me along the side of the air strip for about 140m, running through water that was nearly up to my knees. All in all, a very memorable experience.
