Yeah, it came from my Lithuanian great-grandfather from Kaunas (or some city near it) and it was passed to his son, my grandfather, to my father and finally me. I still have the passport from my great-grandfather, Mykolas Zilinskas, from the 1920s, when Lithuania was still independent from the Reds.

Most of Lithuanians came to Sao Paulo, the richest state in Brazil, and the South Region. Sao Paulo HDI and GDP per capita are on par with most Eastern European countries and some Western too. I love Lithuania, but I don't know if i would get used to its climate, as Sao Paulo is a subtropical place with mean temperatures of 23-27 celsius, the perfect climate for me.

The reason why everyone thinks that Latvia and Lithuania are like sisters/brothers is that when we are growing up, we are told that Lithuania is our biggest friend(which is true) and we are the same. That's why we are calling each other "braļuhas" - "brothers". If latvian is traveling to Lithuania, you feel like home and everyone is nice to you. That's why we love each other so much.

Gott aclear some things: 1. Nobody ever thought about The hill of crosses as creepy. Its a christian monument started long time ago, later serving as a symbol of resistence against russia (tzar and soviet), it was desroyed several times but after each time it grew back even bigger. 2. Crosses are our national monument. In the 18-20th century, many crossroads, and houses had their own cross. They were being made from carved wood or metal. It served as a place of meditation or prayer for those who could not attend the church or for other reasons. These crosses have their own stylized curves and carvings, which closely relate to the paganism (documented in books). My grandfather, a professional blacksmith used to make those in his free time. (this tradition was had poland as well i think) 3. The KGB bunkers and interogation experiences are small local businesses, not something "big" that everybody knows about. 4. If there is anything creepy about lithuania at all, its the politics and inherited public pesimism. After the destruction of soviet union, the former communists took control of the government which resulted in kind of significant lagging in development and essential reforms. Lots of money were stolen by those people, and remanants of the party are still leeching. (thanks to active a few active people (tapinas, maldeikiene, etc.) investigational journalism and ballzy politicians crack down the money leechers and corrupted ones. 5. Bogs and swamps are not "creepy" and there are not too many of them. There are only about 5 decently sized marshes, which are protected and can only be accessed by a wooden footpath. Once a year a number people are issued permissions to harvest the marsh. There are tons berries and mushrooms. Ive heard my uncle tell a story where he used to carry 80kg bag of pristine mushrooms back home. (yes, forest goods were essential to survival (mostly winter) about 30-40 years back, now these goods are still very sought after.)

I imagine the number of marshes is quite high but you're used to them so you just don't notice or consider them or think it's normal. I live in the marshiest area in my country and I would have never considered it if I wasn't told by geographers, I just thought it was normal. I once read that back in the middle ages, in the Baltic people would go to war in winter, despite the harsh northern winters, because at least you could move troops on the frozen land, whereas in summer it was really hard to move armies through the country because of all the marshy lands.

NOOOO. You got something wrong. The first AND THE ONLY king of Lithuania who united baltic tribes was Mindaugas. Gediminas was a Grand Duke of Lithuania. And the grandson of Gediminas (our proudest ruler) was Vytautas The Great, not Vytautynas. Otherwise you did great. Thumbs up for you.

By proudest ruler i meant that he was the ruler we look at as the best for Lithuania and her interests. Lithuania at the peak of it's existence back then. Unfortunately he died before he was crowned. So yeah, we only had 1 king, except for the ones elected in The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after the union in 1569. I hope i made my history teacher proud ^^

Kamil Szadkowski Lol. You believe that you are saying the truth? :D Poland was the one who invited Teutonic order to Prussian lands. Then Poland was the one who encouraged Teutonic raids against Lithuania. Lithuania managed to protect its borders the whole time from Teutonic knights arrival to 1410. As the time went by this order gradually became a problem even for Poland. Thanks to two lithuanians Vytautas and Jogaila and their combined local and hired mercenary forces we managed to win against the order.

"Thanks to two lithuanians Vytautas and Jogaila and their combined local and hired mercenary forces we managed to win against the order." --- If you refer to Battle of Grunwald just remember that Lithuanians run off the battlefield leaving Poles to do the majority of the work. Besides, the war that broke the Order's might was the Thirteen Years War in which Lithuania didn't even participate.

@@united3853 Only because of the reason that you see some letters different than others from other language doesnt mean its easy just like that. To learn lithuanian language in order to be able to speak isnt that hard I guess. But when you go in to depths on how to write and spell it correctly youll have a huge problem doing so cause of all accentuations each word has. Some of letters have commas on the top of them that go from left to right or ~, ˆ (grindà, griñdą, gr̀īda, gréda, grêdu and many more). And emphasis in lithuanian language can be where ever it wants to be, while considering other languages have them only in the beginning or in the end of the word. So what im saying is, some words that we say may have multiple meanings if you dont pronounce them properly. When I had a test on this topic my mom even told me put whatever you think its good on words cause of how hard it is and confusing can get. And dont even get me started on all of those ą, ę, ė, į, š, ų, ū, ž. Some words can have them, some wont. Depends on how you're pronouncing your sentence and words.

We were only 7 students, but damn it was fun. =) Lithuania was also the first country I visited alone at an age of 14. It is one of the best memories I ever had. 2 years ago I wanted to share these memories with my wife who is from Japan and wanted a romantic holiday in Europe. So I convinced her that we should spend our holiday in Vilnius. The one thing I remember most was her looking around in horror as we exited Vilnius station and asking "Where the hell have you taken me?" xD

My dad was Georgian and served in the army with some lithuanians. He befriended a lot of them (just like the video suggests), and after the army they would visit each other sometimes. So one time my dad took his friend along with him. Now my dad knew what "Aciu" meant (thanks), but didn't mention that to his friend. And in Georgian "Achu" means "go!", "forward!" when talking to a horse. So in Vilnius they go to bar with dad's Lithuanian friends and start drinking. My dad's friend was a very good tamada (toastmaster) back in Georgia, so he was chosen as tamada there too. He'd say good things about Lithuania, Vilnius, people and so on in elaborate words. And he spoke in Russian, which was lingua franca in USSR, but not all of the guests spoke Russian, because that was not long after WW2. So those Lithuanians who could speak Russian would translate for those who couldn't. And after getting the message those who couldn't speak Russian would say "Aciu" instead of Russian "Spasibo". Long story short, after several drinks my dad's friend came to conclusion that they guests were mocking him with horse noises and got into a fight with several of them. Lithuanians were very surprised, because they thought that the feast was going extremely well up to that point. After clearing the air they all had a good laugh about it.

The EU had requested that Lithuania seizes their usage of the Ignalina NPP as the model on which it was built was highly similar to that of Chernobyl's, so the EU was unwilling to take the risk of a catastrophe which could possibly leave Lithuania and Latvia in utter chaos.
