I googled that russian town (Vorkuta), it has the darkest history of any town I've ever heard about... (it once was inhabited only by Gulag prisoners, up to 70000 of them). Wouldn't wanna live there, but it's also kinda fascinating...

Ended up with 11,382. 1) Knew it was south america, felt like it was high up so went for south east La Paz, did alright quite proud of that one. 2) Was convinced it wasn't Russia, didn't notice the flag. Went for Ukraine and ended up with a horrible score. 3) Knew it was Russia, no idea where. Went slightly north east of St. Petersburg. 4) Did not know they had yellow licence plates in Luxembourg, nor did I think of it. Went somewhere in france didn't end up too great. 5) Didn't remember where Edmonton was, was convinced it was in the U.S. and spent a lot of time looking for it. Ended up going in northern US as a guess and got a terrible score. Still kicking myself for this one. Love that you keep including the challange link! Keep it up!!

1st Round: It looked like Bolivia, so I went for La Paz - 3690 points 2nd Round: It had to be Sochi because of a palm tree somewhere and the English signs (probably installed for the recent Winter Olympics). The street names were different from the signs but I was able to spot the Magnoliya Hotel - 5000 points 3rd Round: I saw "ТЦ Сыктывкар" on the "Sela" ad, so initially I was searching the city of Syktyvkar, but then I noticed the writing on the faraway building to the west which read "Слава покорителям Заполярья" ("Glory to the conquerors of the Arctic"). I therefore realized it must be a city above the Arctic Circle, probably within Komi Republic (where Syktyvkar is), so it had to be Vorkuta - 5000 points 4th Round: I had no idea about the colours of the plates, so I just went for Paris - 4131 points 5th Round: Found the same clues as in the video - 5000 points Total: 22821 points

1. Haven't noticed bolivian flag, went for northern Argentina, 732 miles away 2. When I saw Russian flag and English that must've been sochi where the olimpics were, also many signs and "coastal feeling", 2 miles away 3. Went above the Kazachstan, 920 miles 4. Didn't know it was Luxembourg, went for southern France, 460 miles 5. Found the 100th Av in Edmonton, but slightly to the west, 3 miles All in all I got 16785 points. Pretty satisfied with that

Vorkuta is one of the most depressed and gloomy cities in the world. I cannot imagine how people live there, although I also live in Russia. The city is located in the tundra, beyond the Arctic Circle. There is no summer here and the snow lasts until July. In winter, the temperature in the city drops below -40 degrees (you know this is the same point for both temperature scales) and strong winds blow. It is impossible to get here by car, only by train or by plane. The journey here by train is mesmerizing, because the train travels through the most interesting landscapes, but the city itself is simply terrible. Vorkuta was built when Stalin ruled the country. The service and security personnel of the GULAG system lived here, who guarded the prisoners who mined coal in the mines. The work was inhuman. Many of the convicts were convicted on political grounds, sometimes even simply slandered. Now the population of the city is rapidly declining. People just leave the city. Apartments here are recognized as the cheapest in Russia and are sold for very low, even in Russia, amounts. So, a three-room apartment with heating, bathroom and toilet can be sold for $ 500. However, now foreigners can easily get to Vorkuta, in contrast to the similar city of Norilsk, where foreigners are prohibited from entering.

"Morskoy" in Russian means "relating to the sea" - "Morskoy side street" is probably meant to translate to "seaside street" or "street leading to/along the sea". (Geez... as a Hungarian growing up in the communis era I had to learn Russian as a foreign language in school. That's when I learned to read the cyrillic writing, and, although I scarcely ever had to use it since (the past 35 years), I can still read it without any trouble... that must have been thorough learning back then :) )

Russian here, the 3rd was a trick one. There is a sign "ТЦ Сыкрывкар" - shopping mall with a name Cytkyvkar(name of a city). So, I click it, and somehow it's Vorkuta city. No sense man, no sense. And Sochi one it's easy - you can see two Fifa World Cup stands!

#1 -- I just went straight into La Paz after scrolling around once. I remembered how you guessed La Paz in another video (I think it was the last one) after seeing the word "paz" and were disastrously wrong so I just went for it since it looked just like Bolivia, figuring the GeoGuessr gods were being ironic to you. Didn't get as many points as you. At least I got the country right. #2 -- Unlike you I can read cyrillic, and I read enough of the words to realize that it was in Russian, even though I don't actually speak (much) Russian. Hint: this is something you should do. You can literally learn it in an hour, and it will help you. I didn't realize it was by the sea, but I knew it was in the very European part of Russia. In fact, I was debating whether to go for Ukraine before I deduced that the words were Russian (also something that enables you to distinguish Russian from Ukrainian -- Russian uses the backwards N, whereas Ukrainian uses the i (a little different than the latin 'i'). I was going to go for Rostov when I zoomed in, but decided to go for Krasnodar instead. Ended up being lucky for me, because that's closer to Sochi. I was smug that you wouldn't do as well, but . . . lol. And recognizing Russian words ended up being pointless because I completely missed the Russian flags lol #3 -- I literally guessed Vorkuta. I had gotten it before in GeoGuessr and it looked like it definitely could be it. And I'd played Call of Duty Black Ops in the past, so Vorkuta was on my mind. Yet when I got it right I was in shock, staring at the screen with my mouth agape for a few seconds. 4,996 points. #4 -- Immediately recognized it as Western European and French writing obviously. Thought I remembered that Luxembourgish license plates were yellow though I wasn't as certain as you, knew from your videos that Mapper loves to luxembourg guessers, and just went for Luxembourg City. 4,939 points. Congrats on your 5,000. #5 -- I though it was in America. Used the trick I learned from your vids to determine that it was in the north because of the cracked roads. Was debating between the Midwest and the East Coast. Went for Ohio as a compromise when I couldn't reach a conclusion. I was pretty surprised by Edmonton . Completely missed the sign obviously. I was more focused on using the black guy as a clue. I thought 'there aren't many black people in Canada, so this is probably the USA.' Look at me, done in by racism. I thought I had you beaten after Vorkuta, but this ended up being my Vorkuta. 793 points. 18,853 total. Well fought. I was so sure I was going to beat you after Vorkuta that I got too arrogant. But in a way this was inevitable. I'm more lucky, and you're more thorough.

1: I found the Bolivian flag, and the guy at 2:31 has Potosi written on his jacket (maybe a sports team?). 1.1 km off, 4996 points. 2: Russia, but it looks warm and lush. The pictures on the building (below the yellow blue sign) look like from the Olympics or the World Cup. I guessed Olympics and went Sochi. 1.6 km off, 4994 points. 3: Russia again. Looks colder and more eastern. I couldn't find better clues, so I just went for Irkutsk. Holy shit! I guessed 2 blocks away from where you did! 2730.2 km off, 712 points. 4: France, but all the numberplates are yellow. This messed with my head. Considered Luxembourg but went for northern France against better judgement (didn't know about their number plates). Still 4552 points. 5: Found the Edmonton sign. 100 avenue and 107th str. with a subway on the corner. 5.5 meters off, 5000 points. Total score: 20254. This was a great game for multiple reasons. I still can't believe we guessed so close together on round 3.

1) I noticed bolivian flag and Quechua is a language spoken in Bolivia. I also was trying to find a bridge and a river, but eventually gave up and tried to find a city in the middle-ish of the Andes, trying not to be too far away from a possible location and went for Potosi. Just omfg, too damn lucky. 4997 points. 2) I'm Russian, so I thought it's Sochi. I found the crossing of the streets, but I didn't realize it was just directions, so i was off by a block. 4999 points. 3) Thought it looked like Arctic Russia (very desolate and depressing, southern Siberia looks way more civilised), so first i thought of Norilsk, but then found "TC Syktyvkar", and there's one big arctic city in the Komi (where Syktyvkar is) called Vorkuta, so I went there. 5000 points. 4) French and yellow license plates on both sides = Luxembourg. Since it was so French i tried to look near the border and it was pretty easy to find the exact spot using the street name and shops. 5000 points. 5) Edmonton, canadian flag, 100 Ave and Subway. Enough to find the exact spot. 5000 points. 24996 points! I played along at every episode since you introduced this feature, and it's the first time I beat you and even with such near-perfect score! Even though I had an unfair advantage of speaking Russian, I'm still very happy :D

Ok, this was an interesting game. 1. I didn't notice the flags. I know that Quechua is an ethnicity and a language around that area, so I went with Peru, got only 2549 points. You beat me there by a lot. 2. I am really happy with this one, I got the exact same street, just to the north of the actual spot. My thought process was similar to yours, I was just pretty sure it was Sochi, because I remembered the Olympics there looking fairly similar. You beat me by 1 frikking point. 3. This was a hard one. I went with Ukraine for some reason. I didn't even notice the snow. Somehow I got 853 points, so I actually beat you. 4. What the fuck? You are insane, man. You got that basically just because of the fucking license plates being yellow. I went with Southern France, since it looked kinda mediterranean to me. Got punished for that with only 3088 points. 5. HA! I beat you! By 10 fucking centimeters. Eh, I'll take it. Overall only 16485, so I am deeply humbled by your score Mr. Wizard. As for next week, I think you should go with something more challenging for the World City Wednesday - something like Bangkok.

proud of myself for getting a perfect score on the last one. not that hard but i missed the street name on the Edmonton sign, thought it was a phone number. did see another sign that looks like it says 7th stre... on the side of the building, blue letters, so wasted time looking for 7th and 100th but ended up looking for the subway and got a perfect score even though it didn’t resister that i should’ve gone next to the bus stop. a lot of fun and a solid hour of free entertainment. legend

These are my FAVORITE please do these all the time. PLEASE just do more play alongs, these are awesome. :D :D First, I do it myself, tab over before seeing if I'm right, then I comment about my thoughts, then I watch your view for the big reveal. Super spoilers in this comment, don't keep reading if you haven't finished. 1. I see "Quechua Aymara" all over posters. I think I know that Quechua is a language spoken in Peru, and for some reason I think I remember back to my school spanish days that it has something to do with Cuzco. So I search around Cuzco for a bit, and end up clicking around the middle. Haven't checked if I'm right. Now to watch yours... yes I saw the flag, but I am horrible with flags (a weakness) so I couldn't identify what it was. Damn, Potosi. 2548 for me. 2. Yeah, can't read Cyrillic very well. I tried. Couldn't identify a city name, I went with Moscow, basically a shot in the dark. My reasoning was, I saw a decent amount of english (ie, roman letters) so I feel like we might be in a place that sees lots of foreigners, so definitely a larger city, but then that's An Urban World. But like, it persuaded me against a Nizhny Novgorod, or Yekaterinburg, or something medium-large, to something super large. Talking out of my ass like I know the size of russian cities. Obviously saw the flag, that's about it. Let's see what he does. goddamn... Sochi? I hope it's not Sochi. ... dear god, the man makes me look like an idiot. Why exactly did he go Sochi? I didn't see the possible water to the southwest, I guess he saw a hotel and a nice building so he thought coastline, but dear god that's ridiculous. 1893 for me, cool. 3. God, that was hard. I basically went, again, Cyrillic writing, nothing recognizable, not Moscow, looks a lot colder, looks a lot like it snowed recently and this was a warmer day, people dressed like it's freezing, so I went with something northern. ie, st. petersburg. Who knows. Let's see what he does. Wow, I definitely thought closer to the western edge of Russia. Well, we both did poorly. I still about doubled his score, though. 1354. Whew, next one. 4. French, thinking near italy, the water I'm guessing based on terrain, is sorta to the south, southeast. I really pegged this to be Lyon. No idea if I'm right. I tried to look for that Hubert Clement school. No luck. Dear lord, I didn't know the Luxembourg license plate thing. NO WAY HE FOUND THE HUBERT CLEMENT SCHOOL. NOT ONLY WAS IT IN LUXEMBOURG, but IT WASN'T IN THE CAPITAL? GOD FUCKING DAMN. I get 3696. He pinpoints it. 5. Ok, fairly certain I found this one exactly. But I think he will easily, too. Edmonton, 107th st and 100th avenue, i literally found it all, not too hard to exactly pinpoint. 5k for both of us - but should be a 5k for pretty much anyone. My final score: 14491. Damn, he really beat me this time! Good game, though. Damn you russia, and obscure Luxembourgian license plate facts, and not knowing the Bolivian flag.

1. Recognised the Bolivian Flags so I clicked somewhere in La Paz. 2. Saw Russian Flags and palm trees so it had to be Sochi, clicked in the city centre 2 km away. 3. Saw a Russian number plate and unusually high amount of red haired people. I know that close to the Ural Mountains many people have red hair so I clicked in a random town there. 2400 km away. 4. Looks like France. The public swimming pool sign looked like it could represent a port so I clicked in Le Havre. 5. Same clues as in video. 5m away. Total score. 18976

I guessed straight away that the second one was Sochi because you don't usually see English writings in Russia, only in tourist cities + World football cup was held there. In Vorkuta there was a clue kind of "Покорителям Заполярья слава" which means "Glory to the conquerors of Arctic" (you saw that writing on the long gray building which you joked about that it was written in English). There was also a name of the shopping centre "ТЦ Сыктывкар" (Syktyvkar) which is a city in the same region as Vorkuta. Unfortunately, I didn't know exactly where that city was when I was doing the challenge.

19892. You just got me :) I didn't get Vorkuta either, though the town has become legendary in the gg community so I should've thought of it! r1 I guessed in Peru. It turns out the bridge is over the railway. I think I've just about finished going through these old challenges (in the wrong order) - so hopefully you'll make some more. Or maybe I should do my own videos ;)

My results: #1: The words Quechua Aymara (they are amerindian languages, btw) as well as the type of textile being sold made me think of Bolivia. Went for La Paz. 3694 points. #2: Did find Russia, but nothing more, went for St. Petersburg. Looking back I could have guessed Olympic city Sochi from 'Barcelona Park'. Never would have gotten your 'sea to the south' clue though. 1274 points. #3: Somehow immediately thought Mongolia, went Ulaanbatar. That was way out of course. 497 points. #4: Really didn't get further than 'French language Europe', didn't know about the yellow numberplates. First thought of Brussels, but in the end decided it must be France. Went for Strasbourg, 4449 points. ('Lycée' is pronounced lee-say, by the way). #5: Found Edmonton, then 100th Avenue, but not 107th street. Went to 112th street instead. Still 4998 points, pretty good. Total 14912 points - scored less than you on every single round... You're good.

Round 1 - Stumped me for a while. Couldn't find anything helpful so going off the assumption it was not Brazil I went for northern Chile and still managed to grab 2532 points! Round 2 - I got Russia immediately, chose a spot on southern border around Kazakhstan and got a pitiful 964 points... Round 3 - You're joking me right.... I lost composure seeing Russia again and just guessed, this time worth 1238 points. Round 4 - My mind immediately thought Dunkirk because of the housing, spent 15 mins searching for the right grid layout and streets but had no luck. Eventually guessed in Deauville as it was halfway along the northern French coast only to feel like an idiot when Luxembourg popped up. Ffs. Still 3685 points I guess. Round 5 - Finally an easy one! Saw the Edmonton sign, 100th Avenue and car park and went looking, only to be an idiot and put my pin 2 streets over at a different car park getting me a painful 4999 points. Final score of 13,418, not a good round from me but two Russia's in a row is BRUTAL

In some Canadian cities (notably Calgary and Edmonton), the street names are relative to a Centre or 0th Ave/St, and they may be designated by NE/NW/SE/SW, so even if you know "100th and 105th", there might be four possibilities. For this Edmonton it doesn't matter as much because downtown is way far away from 0 & 0 but in Calgary you can get pretty mixed up (as I once did trying to get to a New Year's Eve party...)

In the first one, there was a guy with a jacket saying "Potosí" on the back. On the right side of the road. Which i knew to be a city in Bolivia. You could see a region there called San Benito as well. That thingy that looked like a bridge threw me completely off tho. That street wasn't nowhere near a river

1. 3856 - Saw the people, knew Bolivia has a large indigenous population, didn't see bridge. 2. 2865 - Didn't see ocean nor Russian flag, but saw Ukrainian colors and warm-weather foliage so went Odessa. 3. 794 - Colors there were so Ukrainian I just couldn't try Russia, but went Eastern Ukraine anyways because of Soviet-style buildings. (Also really thought that TLD was .ua!) 4. 4147 - Didn't know the license plates thing, so I felt obligated to go for the semi-outskirts of Paris. 5. 5000 - Somehow didn't see the 107th St on that sign, so this one took an annoyingly long time. Good game!

1) Went La Paz, didn't even see the flags but got 3688. 2) No idea other than it was Russia. Felt Finnish in some way so went St. Petersburg. Only 1261. 3) Saw the shop with a green and red logo and thought of Bulgaria. Had no other clues so went in a smallish town in Bulgaria. A disappointing 439. 4) Saw the yellow numberplates and went for Luxembourg. It seemed close to France rather than Luxembourg City so I zoomed in on Esch-sur-Alzette as that was the only other city labelled at the level I was zoomed out at and I happened to see Rue du Belvaux which I had already seen on the sign. Full 5000. 5) Saw the Edmonton and Area sign and found Edmonton on the map. Saw the 100th Avenue roadsign so managed to find that road, went along until I found Subway and placed my marker at the bus stop. Full 5000. 15388. Happy with that especially as I was dragged right down by 2 Russian locations

Ok, first time Im playing along. Playing first, then I'll watch your vid. Opened the challenge, first site I see Spanish. Turned around and there is a panel on unfinished building with email adress .bo I don't think there are many large cities in Bolivia so Im going with hilly part of capital, lets see: 1. 3692 points. Not a capital lol Second one has a Russian flag as soon as you open. So I turned around and saw Russian flag and next to it what seems to be the flag of Azerbaijan. So I zoomed in the map, was looking Makhachkala but went conservatively for Volgograd so if I miss I be closer to target. I missed of course. 2. 3058 points. ALmost freaking 700 km miss on a part of Russia that is tiny. Third one definitely Russia again. Would say deep inside. Can't get out of the buildings, no clue where I am. Picking a city and sticking to it. Omsk 3. 1749 points. Oh boy Fourth, deffo France. I see Tour de France thingy, says eis etape thinking it means eight stage. So deffo not Paris. Picking a city somwhere in the middle of France. St Etienne. 4. 3579 points. lol, not even close. There goes my detective work. Fifth, USA but which city. Then I notice bike lanes. Wait a minute, and streets look nice. Canada maybe? So I moved and moved and then I saw it. A green sign with the domain name on it. And it is Alberta, Canada. Not sure Edmonton or Calgary. Looking for Jasper avenues and I'll decide. It is Edmonton. 5. 4995 points Total 17073 points. Not to bad for me. Now I can watch the master play. Cheers

The year was 1998. I was on vacation with my parents and 2 brothers in cottage country, Ontario, Canada. Tension was high. I was down to my last province, almost dead. But critically weakened by a bloody battle with my mom for control of India earlier in his turn, my brother was unable to finish me off. He had spread himself too thin. It was now my turn. I traded in cards. Reinforcements were coming. Hope was not yet lost. From my humble base in Irkutsk, came the counterattack. The world was mine.

The school sign at 17:39 wouldn't have helped to get the city, unless you know art schools of russia well. 18:30 ''Sela' Syktyvkar' so I guess I'd've gone there. Anyway the structure of the street means a very snowy area, might have helped.

Well, it IS a bridge (carrying light traffic only) -- but it's across railway tracks, not a river. At the far side it ends very abruptly in tight, corkscrew ramps connecting it to a lower street level -- weird! The only reason why I know any of this, of course, is that I went to have a closer look on StreetView after the game was over. That's one of the big bonuses of Geoguessing: all the "useless information" you learn in the follow-up investigations!
