Hi I have seen this problem solved with an additional step, stating that BC = BC (reflexive) before subtracting BC from both sides. Is this step necessary?

Sometimes it depends on how formal one wishes to complete the proof. Definitely makes it more granular, to add the reflexive step. And you appear smart, so that's a win too.

It HAS to be Subtraction of Equality, because that's where you're subtracting from BOTH sides, just subtraction doesn't specify that you're subtracting from both sides.

I thought AB + BC = BC + CD would mean you had to use the transitive property and get rid of the 'middle man' (BC) And that's how you get AB = CD But maybe both works, I'm not sure.
