The French and Imperial Japan sought security by building a line of static defense, the French with the Maginot line and the Imperial Japanese with the island chain occupied after Pearl Harbor. China would do well to learn from history and study the American island hopping campaign of WW2. An island is NOT an aircraft carrier. An island is static and cannot be easily rebuilt or resupplied. Carriers can MOVE. Carriers can be repaired, resupplied and built in safe harbors and allow for much greater tactical and strategic flexibility. We on the other hand can easily cut off Chinese supply lines in the South China Sea at any time and at all places using inexpensive naval mines at a very limited number of choke points. The tactics of naval blockade are well demonstrated throughout naval history, one recent example being Operation Starvation (ref. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Starvation).

Being a Filipino myself, it is disappointing hearing those words since back in the 60's and 70's, The Philippines is the "Major Power" in the region, overpowering other south east asian nations and leading them in politics. This just shows that our government has indeed become weak and even though our current president is proud in his ability to openly voice his emotions, we, the filipino people, fear the possibility of falling into a time of being China's puppet.

While I don't think that the Thucydides Trap is an invalid interpretation, I do think it misses the mark somewhat. Something about history rhyming, instead of repeating. Although China is the rising power, the US network of alliances more closely resembles the Delian League than Sparta's tributary system, whereas China's large but largely untested military seems to mirror Sparta's bullying of adjacent territories. I think the most important aspect of south china sea geopolitics is a state which has no direct naval interest in the region: Russia. Will Russia lend economic and military support to China in a bid to undermine US hegemony, or will Russia support the US to prevent the neighboring China from overshadowing it? Russia has good reason to pursue either path, and to wait as long as possible to make a decision. Ultimately, I feel that the Punic Wars are a more apt comparison. China and the US are ultimately competing for dominance of the Pacific, just as Carthage and Rome competed for the Med. Given the populist sentiment prevalent throughout his rhetoric, I wouldn't be surprised in Trump's 2020 campaign saw him saying "Carthago delenda est" at the conclusion of every speech.

"Will Russia lend economic and military support to China in a bid to undermine US hegemony" Are you seriously thinking about this? Russia's GDP is only about 10% of that of China, and it nowadays basically depends only on selling natural resources, while China has the world's largest manufacturing industry and is the only country on earth that has every single one of all the categories of industry defined by the UN. How possibly can Russia lend "economic" support to China in any perceivable way? Don't you know that it is China that has been continually transferring blood to Russia since 2014 when Russia got sanctioned so harshly because of its annexation of Crimea? The only reason Russia's economy hasn't collapsed is because China doesn't want it to. Also, why don't you take a look at what condition Russia's navy is in? China has a far larger and more advanced surface fleet than Russia. How could Russia possibly lend "military" support to China? In other words, what types of economic and military support do you think Russia can possibly provide to China?

@@thomasweltmeister4544 "what types of economic and military support do you think Russia can possibly provide to China?" Really, I'm just trying to maintain the illusion of impartiality. But it should be noted that Russia has roads, railways, and nukes. GDP and other peace time measures of economic strength are potentially misleading when we're considering a hypothetical conflict that could all-too-easily escalate to world war era levels of total war. I don't think it's inaccurate that Russia has the potential to shift the balance of power depending on who they throw their weight behind. So, even if I think you're being a bit flippant, I don't disagree with your assessment of Russian power. Russia isn't in a position to be an active player. In the wake of USSR collapse, Russia isn't in position to compete on equal footing with either the US or China. That much is obvious. But its strategic presence on the grand chessboard has the potential to shift the conflict against those two parties. Russia siding with the Chinese would force American military assets to be spread on opposite ends of the continent, as opposed to allowing American troops to fight in a single theater if Moscow were to throw its weight behind Washington. The same is true if Russia were to open up another northern theater against the Chinese while the Americans pushed up from the Southeast. But to be honest, I feel that Russia would be best served by throwing its weight behind the US. If China were to come out on top, it's unlikely that Russia could exert soft power influence in the ensuing world order. I feel that China would press its advantage to the detriment of Russian interests. Meanwhile, if the US prevails, it'll be inclined to nurse its wounds and make concessions to Russia. Russia would also have an easier time wooing populist elements within the US to achieve influence over American political proceedings. Another useful historical parallel, beyond the greco-romans, is how Russia and the US defeated and divided Germany following its ascension in the 20th century. I could easily see the US and Russia tag-teaming China in the same manner that they demolished Germany in the prior century. I very much doubt that Russia is eager to have an ascendant China sniping Kazakhstan, Mongolia, et al. away from its sphere of influence. Whatever changes have occurred in the last century due to globalization, I doubt that Russia is eager to share Eurasia with another superpower*. *again, Russia isn't in a spectacular place at the moment, but the idea that they're one of three global superpowers is important to their self-image and not wholly inaccurate as Russia can potentially cast the deciding vote in a conflict between the other two triumvirates. Though I do think India has the potential to be an interesting wild card. I suspect that it'll be too involved with internal affairs, but perhaps I'm underestimating Modi. Hell, it's possible that the US, India, Russia, and China might decide that, in lieu of inflaming hostilities between each other, they'd each be better served by tacitly uniting under the banner of anti-islamic sentiment. China could be allowed to have terrestrial dominion over the SCS if it, as an extension of the belt and road initiative, invests in a US controlled hyperloop/space elevator. We've been sitting at the precipice of extraterrestrial development for a while, but the US's recent adoption of a space force and Chinese investment in that theater seem to indicate that it might actually happen this century. The powers that be could consequentially decide that they're best served not by fighting on the chessboard as is, but by expanding the context of conflict through the acquisition of extraterrestrial resources.

Martin Angeles - defeatist asshole In 2015, there was no one to choose from the pool of corrupt and incompetent pool of presidential hopefuls in the Philippines, then came the hype for Duterte, a simple but unorthodox mayor from a well-disciplined Southern City that is well known for his swift justice style and manly aura. The dormant political families in the last two decades funded him to the presidency not to mention he was looked as the image of the masses. But there was a missing piece of the puzzle how did the Philippine electorate radically changed. Soon after he consolidated power, the Oppostion party lost most of its members to the ruling party. They were not even considered a minority because of a dubious pseudo-opposition party which was installed by the current speaker of the House which before was a former corrupt lady president that this opposition leader jailed. Today, the adminstration does not even have an opposition to check and balance power especially the human rights abuses because of a widely public driven propaganda that all that are against the government are having the same colors and should be hated. A hate that was implanted to someone they didn’t really know but for the sake of being accepted by the community of blind followers. I’m talking about the so-called “Trolls”. These are overseas Filipino Workers who are alone in a foreign place with nothing but a phone and a network of propagating fabricated news to rationalize why this country needs a strongman to fix poverty and by the same time, blaming this to the former ruling political group- all for the sake of being socially accepted by a group of people in the realms of the internet to escape the harsh reality. There is even a joke here that if you are not sure if it is True or if it is false- IT IS TROLLS. The missing piece of the puzzle in who is funding them directs to if it’s not the Marcoses, the former dictator’s family; it is an authoritative regime Duterte admires, a government with no opposition. This trolls are everywhere, HongKong, Singapore, Dubai, ChiTown SF USA, as long as they are reached out by Duterte’s Social Media Propagandist well known in our country as a former sex toy endorser and her army of Blind Followers, they are even here. If Duterte will be succeeded by Marcos Jr or his daughter in 2022, one thing is for sure, Duterte will have somewhere to go to in case The Hague will condemn him once he stepped down. Today, even his Half Chinese lifelong assistant is eyeing for a senate seat. We don’t want to end up like Hambantota, Sri Lanka, Maldives or what recently happened to Najib Razak due to this Belt amd Road Project. But as the elders says “Stupidity is contagious” (I don’t really want to speak with that kind of language because that is the characteristic of a semi-professional Filipino Troll). But as we can see this lind of Social Media Activities is also happening to the US with what we know as “the Russian Trolls”. In fact, I had seen several cases where the US events resembles what we have here (just so you can have idea). Obama was the better person, yet was villified by the Trumptards, Our former president which is an ally of Obama had the same destiny. Trump previously had a show with NBC, today this network attacks him. Duterte also had a Davao show with ABSCBN, today it is one of the fiercest critics of the President, with threats to nullify its license. Donald Trump was linked to a Porn Star We also have one here in the name Mocha Uson Conservative Media have Fox News We also have a network with a bunch of spinsters who targets political motives in the name TV5 Just like how Russia meddled with your elections, we know that there is a big country who did the same thing to ours.

One interesting point (5:57) is that Taiwan makes the same claim over the sea as China. Actually they claim a bit more, the so called 11 dash line, vs China's 9 dash line. The reason for this comes from a bit of history. Taiwan was (still is) Republic of China, the country that used to have both the mainland and Taiwan, and inherits the claim from the late Qing Dynasty. Neither the Qing dynasty nor China was interested or able to enforce the claims, until the recent geopolitical rivalry between the US and China brought this matter to importance. Obama admin's "pivot to Asia" got the parties in motion. The US aims to dominate the sea, as part of its containment strategy, whereas China aims to break that dominance. It's important because most of its trade transit the area. China doesn't yet have the carrier fleets nor friendly navy bases to supply them, so it builds the islands as unsinkable carriers. Media says it's all about resources. That's a smoke screen. The reality is about dominance. We don't need to be shy in saying this. The neighboring states are all unwilling pawns in this game. They will patronize the stronger(at present that's the US), but they don't wish to annoy either too far if they can manage it.

I am surprised by your sloppy and inaccurate representation of what is going on there. You use the word "claims" very loosely, inferring that that claims of all the nations are similar. In fact, you said that the other nations "mirror" China's claims. They do not mirror China's claims. Let me explain. Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei make ONLY the EEZ claims as defined and allowed by the UN. China makes the UNIQUE claim of SOVEREIGNTY. "Sovereignty" means that China wants to treat the SCS as if it was an internal waterway, a river or estuary. If allowed, China would control all sea and air traffic. China could legally blockade the countries of the region, without it being an act of war. China challenges ships, but also challenges all planes flying over the SCS, forcing them to identify themselves and get China's "permission" to fly over.
