I read a French book about Vietnam during their colonial times in Indochina. The French say that Vietnamese people are hardworking, they work all day in rice fields. They have small bodies but they carry large objects in French factories. "Those who are brave in labor, are certainly brave people in combat." If they are trained in discipline, in this East, Japan and Vietnam are the closest to each other. Yes, Vietnam has fought with militarily strong nations despite Vietnamese being thin and small. The French say that Vietnamese people learn how to do (brocade) from China. But they also make better products than Chinese people. In fact, France is a country famous for coffee and bread, and they brought those things to Vietnam while they were there, but now when someone mentions coffee and bread I will think of Vietnam. Vietnamese people have created egg coffee and delicious bread.

Having now lived in Saigon for 6 years, I can say that it's a lot easier for North Vietnamese to move to and live in the South than the other way around. The mindsets are very different, as here in the South people are more easygoing whereas Northerners are more traditional and, in a way, more formal. Still, all Vietnamese are unified under their flag when it comes to football. Traffic in all big cities is bumper-to-bumper when Team Vietnam wins a match. I love to go "storming" the streets with my friends as well. Greetings to the Vietnamese people. I love your country. :)

White American here whose dad was a Marine combat veteran (M60 machine gunner and also Vietnamese interpreter). My little private liberal arts college I went to had perhaps more Vietnamese attending than any other foreigners and so I was really good friends with several of them (all were from the North). I even dated one pretty seriously from my junior year to right after graduation. It was surreal the family dinners where my beautiful girlfriend was speaking Vietnamese with my dad, and him clearly remembering more and more of that language that he used to use everyday in combat. Her dad had fought in the war too so it was crazy to think here we were, only one generation away from when our fathers were trying to kill one another. I've always wanted to visit Vietnam and I really hope I can one day. The Vietnamese people are very strong, smart, and hilarious people. As a nation, you all are easily one of the most powerful forces to be reckoned with in all of Asia. Much respect 💯

Never again would we be pawns for the big countries with their dirty games. Never again would we want to be used in military actions against one country for another. Thus the 3 Nos. Yes, we know that our only weapon then would be soft power and diversified trade with everyone. @@philipgates988 Yes Saigon is the main economic force with great dynamics (it contributes about 30% of the whole country GDP). But I wouldn't stress the role of the US in this. You see, the city has been an economic hub since its establishment, and the French contributed a lot to building it. During the US presence they mostly spent money on turning Saigon into an entertainment for the US army there, not on businesses or infrastructure. (Yes they did built infrastructure for the purpose of war.) As I see it, what makes Saigon different than the rest are 2 things. The first is its strategic geography with all of its ports and connections close to everything. (If you look at the map, you'll see that the city is actually the center of South-East Asia, more center than Singapore.) The second thing is the business-oriented, direct (in the sense of being frank) open-minded social environment. The combination is a very business-friendly city with lots of opportunities. The bureaucracy is much less a hassle than in other places. Many Northerners moved south to the city because it's easier to live and do business there, and many succeeded in becoming the important players in many of the city's business sectors. About the relation with the USA: it's not just Saigon but the whole country population is very young (half of the country was borned after the war). Some people in the South have already been friendly to the US. Ironically, thanks to Communist propaganda, the whole country embraces doing business with the US, some even go further to supporting military alliance to counter China. The people blindly worship the US as much as they blindly hate China. Hell, Trump certainly is loved more by Vietnamese than by American simply because he's POTUS. What's worse is that many endorse the US idea of privatizing everything, from education to healthcare, not realizing how terribly privatization has ruined the US. If you're an entrepreneur looking for opportunities, I'd say now is the time. The city is actively expanding/renewing its infrastructure, most of which have not been fixed since the French and the American built them. This creates a lot of new jobs and attracts a lot of people (the population is now 10 mil) and even puts more stress on the city's poor infrastructure. There is apparently no dominant player in consumer businesses. While domestic companies are thriving, they don't have enough resources to become dominant. On the other hand, foreign companies often fail because they don't understand the mindset of the people.

I'd add 1 more point: the 3 Nos policy is actually part of Vietnam's way to balance China in my opinion. The Sino-Vietnam war showed to us that: ally can't help shit for Vietnam against China's power. Even USSR, a superpower that time. So, a military alliance is useless for Vietnam, it only angers China like it did in the past, and makes China being wary of us. With the 3 Nos policy, Vietnam actively shows to China that: we are not your enemy. That way, no matter what kind of things Vietnam did, even against China's favor, like being friendly with Taiwan, as long as we don't push too far, China won't mind. China also has to watch out not to push Vietnam too far in the conflict, of Vietnam will side to the West in the heartbeat. So this way, we are very politically independent, not needing to watch China or US's altitude, and China also won't want to pressure us too much. It's a delicate balance, but it works. Really well actually

Great video with extensive research. It's like you're reading our vietnamese thought with this video. That said. I don't agree that dropping the three Nos should be our geopolitics goal. As you said, Vietnam needs to balance China, not counter them. The three Nos is there to ensure our neutrality, to tell China that we are willing to side with the US if China put too much pressure on us. Dropping it and choosing the US would backfire on Vietnam as China would see no need to be cautious around Vietnam anymore and will put full blow pressure on us. Even more so when Trump is the president. Seeing how Trump is treating his allies Japan and South Korea, i doubt that he would give us the help we need to stand up againt China.

Unfortunately, such a policy seems like Vietnam's only option, despite the fact that it leaves Vietnam defenseless against any Chinese aggression. I would expect Vietnam to be bending to Beijing's will any time there is a dispute in the future. An alternate course of action would be to strengthen ASEAN into a political and economic union which could say no to China when needed.

Some corrections: _Recent trade diversification means that Vietnam does not rely on trade with China anymore than an average country would. _Rather than being a separatist measure, Vietnam's 3 No's can (and should?) be viewed as the country trying to maintain itself as the neutral zone between spheres of influence of many of the world powers. US, Russia, China, Japan and Korea all have stakes in the country, and as long as there is no clear winner, the country's survival is ensured. We recently learned from Ukraine that if a neutral-zone country sway to one side, bad things can happen to it

Well, it’s issue of timing. Don’t do it when you are at your weakest and bigger neighbor is at their strongest. Big part of eastern Europe managed to escape and join NATO by 1999 or 2004. For example you are at your weakest when you’re sleeping, when enemy attacks during such time, your defense will be significantly lower. Current geopolitical situation around Vietnam is that their neighbor is the second strongest country in the world. So obviously not a good timing to do moves. Not a strongest position Vietnam could be. But India is growing. Indonesia is growing. If in future they grew enough to achieve balance of power in south east Asia, Vietnam’s defense becomes stronger. (If Indian and Chinese forces balance each other, China will have less forces to pressure on Vietnam)

In explaining to the 3 nos policies of Vietnam No Military Alliance: This was to as you said "balance China", the reality is Vietnam cannot and will not be able to enter any military alliance without upsetting either China or USA or both. Entering a military alliance also broke the delicate and complicated relationship between Hanoi and Beijing. Right now, we, Vietnam is either outright hostile or ally of China. We have played the friendnemy relationship like this for 10000 of years now. And it will never change unless there is a military alliance with Vietnam at the helm. No Foreign Military base on Vietnam: This is a very touchy situation in Vietnam. The sovereignty and independent of Vietnam has based its concept of Vietnam as a whole. Having a foreign military base in Vietnam is a taboo that will not be tolerated by any Vietnamese. Thus allow a foreign military base on Vietnam soil not only goes again anything Vietnam stand for in protecting its independence, it is also an act of treason and will cause civil unrest that will destroy the country as it has happened multiple time before. No reliance on external power is also based on our past experience, especially around the time of French colonial. Reliance on external powers never end up good for Vietnam, the Vietminh tried to rely on the USA to gain independent again France and Japan in 1942, it backfired in 1945, then north Vietnam rely on Soviet and China instead, it did not end well in 1954, in 1954 south Vietnam tried to rely on the USA and its allies, it did not end well. In 1984, the same thing happened with the Soviet in the Sino-Vietnam war. Also, you would see a bigger picture if you examine the relationship between Vietnam and the rest of SEA. Historically, ASEAN was created as a blockage toward Vietnam. It was still like that for the rest of the ASEAN countries till this day.

However, as a Viet, I would have a bit of correction, since you kinda skim over 1000 km of Central Vietnam, and over assess Southern Vietnam. There are huge regionalism in *different parts of* Vietnam and make its geography/politics not only split between North and South. At first, Saigon is not on the Mekong River Basin, it's on the Saigon River which root from the Central Highland, prefect for industrial and plantation. The HCM City's Metropolitan Area (Southeast VN) are mostly industrial; while the Mekong River delta (Southwest) are mostly focus on agricultural (very fertile land with great water network, which ideal for rice and fishing) and hardly any industrial activities. You should not put these 2 distinct regions. Since I'm from Da Nang, VN's third largest city, literally half way between Saigon and Hanoi, free from their respective influences, and it's actually more progressive than both HN and SG. South Central Coast historically population by Cham people who were Hindu, great traders and great seafarer (which might be relevant to the part where you discuss the south china sea issue).... [more on that later] Edit 1: More about the 3 NOs. The Vietnamese government wanted to stay independent, neutral, and especially not being relied on external powers (on manpower), even in its worst. During the peak of the American war, the DRVN government only allow thousands Chinese and North Koreans soldiers on Vietnamese command in defense, none in the frontline. The isolation have some disadvantage, but VN is the only countries to involved with the 3 of the UNSC's Permanent Fives ... and able to fend them off, so it's some exception to the rule, being able to use its disadvantages to become advantage. Its neutrality allow VN to buy weapon from Russia, US, China, Israel,...

Greetings from a Hanoian! :)) I really appreciate this comment, since in the video, Shirvan focuses maybe too much on the bipolarity of Vietnamese geopolitics, that he oversees the surge in development of the Vietnamese Central Region. Danang today sure is one of Vietnam's leading cities and powerhouses, and its popularity has transcended the domestic border, as more foreign tourists are flocking there annually. I have visited Danang once and I absolutely loved it! One small correction though, Danang is actually not the 3rd largest city in Vietnam, Haiphong is. In fact, it's not even the 4th largest one, but anyways, it deserves more credits than people tend to think.

cursed_oxygen Yeah about the South China Sea, what sparks this conflict are the 2 archipelagos: Spratly and Paracel Islands. Many nations claim these islands as they extend their EEZ and therefore natural resources. We claim both as we were the longest to inhabit these islands (back in the Tran dynasty I think, around the 1600-1700s, while China sent settlers only since the 1970s The thing is there are no definite evidence (documents) dating back to the old dynasties about the islands, and it was perceived as common sense since everybody knew about the fact that we were there first. Now China is striking on these factors to claim the islands, as well as the Philippines and Indonesia. China has since then sent huge coast guard crafts here, and not only threatening Vietnamese but also Filipino and Indonesian fishermen, as well as installing military installations on man-made islands ( which were formally rocks btw lmao)

The South China Sea acts pretty much as a natural barrier between the two. Thai-Viet, nonetheless, have had conflicts since before the formation of nation state of Thailand and Vietnam and well into the Cold War. Unfortunately, both countries seem to fight in a proxy warm with Laos and Cambodia being the battle ground, which also acts as a man-made buffer between the two countries. So I think there are interesting elements to be explored in the Thai Viet relations

The key to understand VN's 3 NO policy is the 1979 SINO-VIETNAMESE war. The Soviet promised military action assisting in fighting the Chinese. Needless to say, it never did meterialize. Thus VN leaders switched priority, from allying with a superpower to balancing multiple for their gains. Quite pragmatic.

Aligning with the Soviets was a geopolitical mistake up front. Their locations are much to far and the infrastructure at the time was much too primitive to even think of lending a military hand in anything outside of smaller logistic supports. The U.S makes a much better ally as they are a naval and air power with much more geopolitical interests in the region. Even the best solution for Vietnam would be to incite separation in southern Chinese ethnic groups weaken China’s hold while also increasing the amount of allies in the region.

Recently the US also abandoned the Philippines to its course in the dispute with China over Scarborough. In this case, your best option would naturally be to stay as neutral as possible, hence the 3 NOs policy.

The loss of the Vietnam war is much more complicated than just the U.S wanting to cozy up with China or the current political situation of the U.S being unreliable. As far as I know, the US backed the French in the first Indochinese War, in which the Vietnamese clearly fought for their independence. Likewise, during the Sino-Vietnamese border war in 1979, the US didn't help, they even condoned China to do so. In the 1989 Spratly Islands skirmish, the US didn't do any damn thing to settle the situation. Now tell me, which role does the US play actually to secure anyone in around the South China Sea's independence or security? The Philippines, a traditional ally of the US, couldn't even count on it, so much so that the current Filipino president outright flamed the US and cozied up with China. So my whole point is, the best solution is to stay neutral and tie the interests of all major powers up to yourself, so that an aggression would be impossible, not to ally with anyone.

So just because I am intrigue with Western culture and other stuffs made me become a non-Vietnamese and also I love the sounds of English language more than Vietnamese. That's called preferences dude, many of us spent our childhood in foreign soil. Can't help it, but I would say I am proud of Vietnamese people and deep inside me there's also Vietnamese blood too. Ok let me tell you a story from my history, I love Vietnam, it's a beautiful country, I wish I was born there, but I couldn't, because when the Independence Palace got liberated by Vietnamese forces, my great grandfather was a soldier belong a force called "Diem", idk what it's called in English, my bad. So after that, he and his fellow soldiers has 2 choice: to stay and die or... retreat together with the US soldier to the West. He choose to live, is that a unreasonable choice ? There are still many Vietnamese with their grandparents used to serve under a different political party other than communism in the war. You would be surprise at how many of us are here, but to concluded, the war is over, most of them are now rest-in-peace under few inches of dirt. At his time, when call conflicts are gone, their children, like me for example, all willing to go back to Vietnam and study about our origins, about the beautiful, the ugly and the bad of the country and for the most of that is our will to contribute and help to improve this beautiful land, the so called "the most peaceful country on earth". So instead of looking down on us just because we suffered from a mistake of the past, teach us your way, teach us how to become a good Vietnamese citizen, we can become good partners, companions in work and many other great things. Yeah it's pretty good video. Only 2 things that he missed The role of ASEAN, which act as soft politics to protect Vietnam from Chinese influence. Since if Vietnam becomes China client state, every other ASEAN country will be next on the dish. So collectively they have been assisting each other not to fall too far into Chinese sphere of influence The nationalism identity that is very strong in Vietnam. Repelling foreign invasion (regardless if it's Mongolian, Chinese, Japanese, French or US) is a strong part of Vietnamese identity. So it's very difficult to set up an obvious puppet government in Vietnam without massive public backlash (US experienced it first hand). Land conquest on Vietnam is hence very ineffective. Because frankly a war against Vietnam only truly start once you have conquested some lands and get derailed by its guerrilla army

Thanks for the video Shirvan. I would have to add an addendum to your statements at 6:06. The reason why there are not decisive boundaries between the Vietnam and Cambodia is because Vietnam has expanded past them. Had they stayed out of the lower 1/3 of the Annamite Mountains they would of had natural boundaries to act as “a strong fence” as you say. Vietnam’s geopolitical fate imo lies not in weakening it’s neighbours to the south by taking land but asserting itself in the north with stronger boundaries and more regional allies in southern china.

Vietnam would mouth watering onto Cambodian farm land since past as well as the further time. That's a worry for most of us. China and Vietnam are the most insecure financial threatening onto all Khmer civilians in term of farm land. Because of our positive and calm attitude in our culture driving us lack of ability to confront all kind of fights then lost the finamcial security for our next generations like we lost our Mekong Delta land to Viet today. I hope the world can see this issue (there are monsters on our Planet looking for blood from poor and vulnerable people like us).
