George Benson is a highly skilled, incredibly talented man that more people today should be exposed to. I've been listening to him since I was 10 years old & it never gets old.

I accidently came upon this video about George Benson and his guitars and its has delighted me because of my uncle Tommy "Wig" Wigfall's relationship with the young guitarist in the early 60's. Tommy had traveled the big band circuit in the 40's, usually playing the clarenet or sax with the Jimmy Palmer orchestra but sometimes filling in on temporary tours with Benny Goidman and others. In the late 50's, early 60's he ran a music store in Chicago where he met many fine musicians passing through but one in particular making a huge impression on him The young Benson would try different guitars in his store and ask Tommy questions about his favorite big band and jazz guitarists many of whom Tommy knew. George owned a Gibson at the time but was interested in another model and Tommy tells of taking him to see his Gibson supplier to see what they could work out for him to afford the model he wanted. Tommy had an album among his collection that was one of Benson's first and a paragraph written on the back thanking Tommy for his support and help with contacts with Gibson. Tommy died in 2008, long since having sold his treasured collection of autographed albums of friends in the business but your video was a great help to put that story in context for me.

I really enjoyed that , thanks Ramon. I recall a TV interview with Manny from Manny's guitars in the 80's where he said George Benson used to come in all the time when he was a kid and sit & play until he got thrown out. One day Wes Montgomery was in the store and said to Manny "Hey that kid can play !" . Manny said he never threw out that kid again after that !

Mister George Benson took me backstage to his dressing room to help me out with my serious guitar problem. I dropped out of high school to get a steel factory job so I could buy the same equipment Jimi Hendrix used. That's a 1964 Stratocaster, a 50 watt Marshall stack, with a wah, Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face and a phase shifter. I was playing my brothers' acoustic left-handed without reversing the strings. I was agonizing, knowing how easy it felt for my fingers to play with the bass strings on the bottom. Mister Benson shared a 1955 Gibson L5, black, handing it back and forth while he assessed my playing potential. He moved my fingers into chords, asking me if I can hold it and then slide it up or down. I could write a chapter about this evening, but just as much as sharing a guitar with Mister Benson, was walking out onstage with him. He was saying something about going out another door with a big smile on his face, and then there we were, standing onstage together. The room changed. Women stood up, waving a handkerchief at him. Men stood up, holding out a big cigar or waving some money. It was a wonderful sensation, being the center of that kind of attention. George put his hand on my shoulder and said it's time for me to play, so I walked off and went back to our table. I'd like to add something about his back-up band, who he said were New York session players. His back-up guitarist, sitting, did a solo tapping, using four fingers for the frets and three for the tapping, sounding like a violin trio or quartet. His bassist used a Dan Armstrong acrylic solid-body through an Ampeg amplifier. He said New York city wanted to have a New York sound, so the musicians' union ordered a new amplifier that had a deeper bass. You had to unsnap the lid, the top of the speaker box, lift it out and turn it over so you can access the controls. It had a fifteen inch speaker. I was surprised to see a solid-body bass, but this set-up sounded like an upright. Oh yeah! I knew the chords and riff for "Breezin" two years before I heard it on the radio. Thank you George.

Great stuff! I would have loved to go into all the Ibanez GB models. The most striking of which is the model used for the Breezin Lounge (with Jody FIsher) series on KZbin. What a finish. The photo of the Weekend L.A album cover isn't the Ibanez 2461. It is the earliest GB10 - released in June of 1977. So he had already met with the Japanese before that concert. And I can assume it's the first recording with his signature model. And what an album it was. To us Benson fans, it's one of the pillars of his music career. Spectacular.

@ The Guitar Show , Hi and many thanks for this brilliant & long awaited doc on The history of George Benson’s guitars but I beg to differ on just one thing and this is the guitar Benson used to record “Breezin” , since around 77/78 I started to make enquires as to what guitar he used to record the album “Breezin” , many people said he used his 175 Ibanez copy at the time but I always had my suspicions it was another Guitar , anyway I gave up , always wondering !! fast forward to 2014 when I read an interview with Benson and the question was asked what guitar did he use In the studio to record “Breezin” he told the interviewer he used his D’Angelico New Yorker , he went on to explain that he’d bought it , I think he said in 1969 as an acoustic and took it to his luthier to get a floating pickup put on it , the answer seems almost to be elusive as you are saying he used the Gibson L5 which tally’s up with the cover photo on the Breezin album , will this ever be conclusive I ask myself was it the New Yorker or the L5 !! George if you read this please put us straight I’m sure I’m not the only one that would like a definitive answer. 😊 Thanks again for a great doc on this very magical guitarist. The Gretsch shown is not an altered White Falcon. It's a 1962 Gretsch Country Club. I know because I had one and the photos are exactly like mine, an unaltered stock sunburst. It is also thinner than all the earlier Gretsch hollowbodies. Only the White Falcon, the Country Club, and the Country Gentleman have 17" bodies. Starting in 1962 only the Country Club would have retained the single cut body. The White Falcon of any year would have had a totally different shaped headstock that no luthier could have reshaped. George may have had a White Falcon that he had altered in some way, but the photo you are showing is a 1962 Country Club in sunburst. The head stock, the body's thickness, and the cutaway are all wrong for a White Falcon of any year.

Great viewing. One clarification, if it hasn't already been pointed out. On the cover of "The Other Side of Abbey Road", George is holding a Guild X-175. The X-175 is spec'd very much like an X-500, but is positioned just below it in the lineup and features chrome hardware, single block fingerboard inlay, a Chesterfield headstock inlay (rather the a single "G"), and less fancy binding and tuning machines. The anecdote about young George experiencing an amplified Epi Emperor is the definition of "How to Make a Musician".

I've been wondering recently how did he get so damn good at such a young age. Currently my thought on his is his mom was an avid singer and sung to him in the womb, so with a love of music in the house , he developed his singing probably starting as soon as he could nearly talk, then his step father introduced him to guitar at 7yo, and from there on with his singing he developed a love for guitar, by the time he was 20yo he was playing with Jack McDuff at an extremely advanced level.

Many may not know but I read and also heard that Wes Montgomery and George Benson would both go to Grant Greene concerts and stand in the back listening for hours. All 3 did have simular styles. And Grant when playing with Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel was a superior soloist. Herb's and Barney's were quit stiff and lacked the smooth flow Grant had.

Hey Ramon, I was watching a Ben Harper video on KZbin the other day and thought of you, didn’t know if you had seen it, the one when he chats about buying the Dumble from David Lindly. I think it was for Premier Guitar... I thought it was petty good but I am a massive Ben Harper fan.... Good work

Ive seen that video... Love it Ben Harper ia a great artist! I diid some work with Charlie Musslewhite.. Very cool dude!
@eddiejohnson3714 жыл бұрын
The Guitar Show oh great, Mr Musslewhite I imagine is one of the nicest guys you could meet? I could also see you rocking Ben Harper’s Asher 6-string that I think was also the signature model for the guy in his band...

Great research, great vid. I got into Benson as a young man living among friends in London during the 1970's. Breezin' was the one we all listened to of course, and loved, plus his live album. So much great live music around those days (anyone remember Steve Waller's, No Mans' Band at the Two Brewer's, Clapham and the Half Moon, Herne Hill?). This video is a reminder of why all guitarists should enjoy the woody tones of a nice, well set up jazz Arch-top. I always wanted a Johnny Smith. But they seem to come and go so much between jazzers ownership. Always wondered why? However I'm really happy with a well set up Godin sunburst Jazz with floating mini-humbucker. Putting D'Addario flat wound 10's on made all the difference. Feels right.

Sounds like you have a great guitar. I guess the JS model is expensive, fragile and being solid its prone to feed back and seasonal changes which is why folk pass them on a lot. Thanks

Great guitar player George Benson! One thing Ramōn, Americans, pronounce the city and state of a persons birth etc. in this case GB. You said, " He was born in Pittsburgh?" Which one? There are 38 cities in 38 different states from the 50 states of the United States of America that are named Pittsburgh! To clarify and not to leave ambiguity we would say as an example. Steve Perry, lead singer, of Journey was born in Hanford California. There are a total of 7 Hanford's in 7 states in America! Dig today's great player-George Benson!

Hey Mike thanks for touching base - Im sure you must be a red hot player! Just checked out your youtube its great. Sorry for not getting in touch I was really busy gigging around that time (unlike now!) so one gig tended to fade into another and hard to remember the specific ones lol -
