Thanks for this. I used to see George from time to time in Nandos coffee house in Chelsea. A very quite and unassuming man who was always happy to have a little chat. He mostly sat alone and you could see the sadness he carried. RiP George, you were a lovely man.

I vow to visit this grave some day. My father died in exactly the same way the year before George. He was 61. He was a huge fan of George, & also played football in his younger day. Just like George he was a special kind of man, down to earth, & would give his last to anyone that needed it. Alcoholism is a terrible disease of the mind & body, often destroying not only the individual affected, but their families too. I live with the devastation that it caused, each & every day, even 11 years on, as will the Best family. Be very proud of George for who he was, & for what he achieved. People adore him, to this very day. I hope my father gets to meet him, I know they will both keep the angels laughing... R.IP two special men.

Haven't looked at the video for a year now but its still great to watch. I can't leave without another tale or two about George when he was in Edinburgh. In the days when clubs didn't have special training grounds George ealked out onto the Hibernian pitch along with the trainer and says " i can hit that crossbar as many times as you like from here " and he just did it, no problem. Left the trainer shaking his head in wonder. Another time he took on some of the junior lads and no one could get the ball off him ! He just glided around them and yet he was so humble amongst all his team mates .

Will never forget it Tom. I was mesmerized by the way he moved. I was only in my first season as a pro and at 19 I couldn't get near him! His pace is not often talked about but over the first 10 yards he was like lightening. The last time I saw him was at a dinner in London just before his first liver transplant and obviously he looked quite ill but he had such a glint in his eye that charmed all the girls which he never lost. I will never forget him and indeed writing these notes I feel quite emotional. The only other players who had the some gifts as George was our own Eddie Gary, Rodney Marsh, Alan Hudson and Stan Bowles, oh and Tony Currie. On a lighter note, wherever George is he'll be having a good time. RIP xx legend.

I keep coming back to watch this video about George's grave. I find the commentary heartfelt and genuine about George. Please if you can either read the book " when George came to Edinburgh" or get it off the internet. It's great, as it tells some wonderful stories about his time playing for Hibernian football club. No so much the games he played but just about him as a person interacting with local people that he met. George was walking along Princes Street without any security people and passed a Hibs supporter who stopped for a double take - George just winked as if to say yes it really is me.

I'm from Scotland and after, by chance, visiting a pub in Edinburgh called jingling Geordie's I noticed a picture of George on the wall. It recalls a time when he was there with some of his team mates from Hibernian football club and after seeing it I developed a fascination for him but not because of his football prowess but for his acts of kindness and generosity towards people. He turned out many, many times in matches for charity and testimonials, very often for free just to raise funds. People often described him as being humble and quiet when they met him - no big time charlie. Read a book called " when George came to Edinburgh" for more insights into his charisma with people. He went out of his way to be nice and considerate to all.

What a tragedy wish he could beat the drink. Sad to see him gone at 59 which is almost 12 years ago. Sadly watching him in the last year of his life he knew he was a goner. Great footballer but also deep down a great person that the drink stolen from us.

Could I just add a couple of stories about George's time in Edinburgh which I was told by the people involved. One was that George was asked to take part in a quiz show one night at a local school to raise funds for a foreign trip by the school team. He readily agreed. Another time the reserve players were on their Christmas night out at a pub and George called in and left a few hundred pounds behind the bar for all the team to enjoy themselves on him without taking a drink himself then left. He didn't need to bother doing that.

Hi Tom sorry for the correction but that was the European Cup much more prestigious than Euefa cup, probably just a slip of the tongue. Thanks for showing us the great man's resting place I'm planning a trip over there soon to go and see where the other legend was made TITANIC,now I've seen your vid I might go to see his gravesite too,thanks pal. Tonnes of respect to you fella from Stretford Manchester.

Hi Paulus, Don't be sorry. i'm glad when folks get in touch. I do get things wrong. I'm totally clueless about football. I like watching though. My sons are very knowledgable. George is in Roselawn not far from the entrance. Ask any of the ground staff and they will point you where. Roselawn is on the Ballygowan road. You can get a tour of the house in the Cregagh Estate where George lived too. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

@@TomMcClean Thanks Tom I'll have to watch some of your other videos how far are you from Haarland and Wolf you know the old ship building yard where Titanic was built,i might have to visit there on my own I'm having trouble finding anyone interested in the great liner enough to want to visit the site where she was built,im really looking forward to going over there y uncle lived near Belfast on the outskirts for most of his life,my cousins are from over there born and bred

Hi again Paulus. i have a stack of videos about in round the Titanic docks area. I can see it from the top of the hill 300 yards from our home. Check out this wee video I did. It covers a lot of the major attractions. It is a bit long though! lol Belfast Titanic Maritime Mile Ramble and Rant kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKi1ZYuAn5pjpJo

@@TomMcClean That's brilliant Tom and I know folk can be discreet about who they meet online but perhaps when I come over if you are only 300 yards away I could come say hello for a few minutes,but that's great that you live that close. My main attraction is to see the final fitting out bay where they put the propellers on and stuff of Titanic Olympic and Britannic it's so fascinating and then over to that kind of museum there,i know they don't have many artifacts but there's a kind of show there I think where you go up in a lift type thing. Really can't wait to go it's in my bucket list of things to do and thanks so much for the video I shall watch it now..Paul
@TomMcClean3 жыл бұрын
No Paulus, You misunderstood we live about 3 miles away. But can see the docks from the hill 300 yds from our home. If you wasnt to see actual artifacts then get along to the Ulster folk and Transport Museum at Holywood Co Down and go round the Titanic museum there. The Titanic Hotel is excellent too. It is based around the old Titanic Design offices and there are rooms at the back that the designers all used. You can do a free tour. The Nomadic is special too. I'm not fussed on the big Titanic Exhibition Centre. It's really there for the Japanese/American tourists. I would happily meet you if I can for a cuppa down at the docks.

It's a shame when a great footballer has the misfortune to be born in a country that is not a football powerhouse and thus misses out on so many major international tournaments. The result being that they are underappreciated in other countries. I've never seen a graveyard with the graves so closely packed together.
@TomMcClean Жыл бұрын
You are spot on in what you say GLT. Yes a lot of our graveyards are like this. It is not at all unusual here. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

George best was a great player no doubt, but in my opinion not the world's best player. Cruyff van Basten Messi romario Pele eusebio Gerd Muller Beckenbauer dalglish Colin bell Mario kempes. I could go on the list is endless. Big respect to George and I miss seeing him on Gillette soccer Saturday he was good on that. Seemed like a decent funny man. Like my snooker idol Alex Higgins, you will be missed always George, and thanks for the great memories, especially the 6 goals Vs Northampton in the cup. RIP to George and his mum and dad too. God bless you all.

What you have to remember is players like Messi would be crying 1 minute into a match because back then you had to be so tough
@TomMcClean8 жыл бұрын
Spot on comment Matthew. That indeed is the big difference for a lot of modern players and players like George Best back then.
