i think this was the last time that a presidental debate had "what should we do with the surplus" as a main issue

Probably because it was the last time we actually had a surplus. Bush ate it up and then created a huge deficit thanks to the advice he got from his dad's friends.

@@RJ1999x Get your facts straight, ignoramus. These are THE FACTS according to Forbes Magazine: "President Donald Trump claimed Feb. 15 that former President Barack Obama “put on more debt on this country than every president in the history of our country combined.” . . . Patrick Newton, a spokesperson for the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget . . . pointed out that the debt was already projected to increase before Obama assumed office. Robert Bixby, executive director of The Concord Coalition, a group that advocates for fiscal responsibility, made the same point, citing federal spending on baby boomers as one example. “During Obama’s first term, the baby boomer generation begin[s] to qualify for full Social Security benefits and Medicare at age 65. Spending on these programs went up as more beneficiaries began to qualify for benefits,” he told The DCNF in an email." It appears that President Trump and Congress have reached a deal to increase the debt limit and a two-year budget that will substantially increase the yearly federal deficit. Besides throwing aside any semblance of budget restraint by either political party, it will create $1 trillion plus budget deficits for as long as the eye can see. Trump likes to claim that everything he does is the largest by any President. He is going to get his “wish” with the budget deficit since they are on course to be the biggest in an expanding economy. Between the 2018 tax cuts and the increase in spending for 2020 and 2021 it will push the accumulated deficits to be the largest ever over a four-year timeframe. And God help the U.S. when a downturn in the economy hits and the deficits balloon beyond any current projection". Trump's deficit is already overtaking Obama's 8 YEARS and Donald's first term IS NOT EVEN OVER.

@Scotty St Cloud The point is that he does NOT speak in a very basic way. Ernest Hemingway, with his love of plain prose and short sentences spoke in a very basic way. Trump BUTCHERS the English language. I've seen corpses with a better grasp of syntax and semantics. It's not the case that his language resonates with the working class. It's his dog-trombone racism, and hatred of intelligent, educated, and thoughtful human beings that resonates with the political lowest common denominator of the hoi polloi. They love him, not because they like what he says, but because he cannot say anything at all. He has no discernable articulated views on anything. He is a political HULK, only without the super-intelligent and caring Bruce Banner alter ego. He's a pure rage monster.

@LᗩᑎDO LᗩᑎD it continues because the majority of individuals support the set up. When a president declares war on another country, that president doesnt do any fighting themselves, they send an army. If each individual in that army chose not to obey the president, the president has no power. Like how the "Government" locked up Ithe Wikileaks guy. The government told their police to lock him up, if the entire police force refused, theres no power.

@1 Atom 12 Trump tried to go full Bernie promising free things but turned out to be an evangelical enabling libertarian in the end. I knew from his history that he was a lying playboy so didn't vote for him unlike many ignorant and naive americans. He promised factory jobs, healthcare, lowering prescription drug prices among other socialist ideas. Don't tell me that GOP and the Chamber of Commerce support those ideas. There is a reason that he broke the blue wall and got the states through a razor thin margin but now Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin are going Biden's way. Ohio and even Iowa which he won by nearly 10 points are in danger of a flip. North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona (likely) and the biggest prize of it all, Texas, will just be the icing on the cake.

The show still does. Always has. People have fond nostalgia for their “own” SNL but in reality the quality has been remarkably consistent over 40 years. It’s always been a mixed bag, with the political satire being the stronger moments.

Yeah, a great one! With clean air, clean water, and definitely less human impacts on our climate/environment. Just imagine what this world could be right now!! What the F is everyone so afraid of? Why is half the country scared shit-less to admit, and act to prevent, a global disaster that is caused by man-made climate change??? I really, really hope this country WAKES UP in November 2020 and votes selflessly for the sake of our bright blue ball just spinning, spinning free? Dizzy with the possibilities. Ashes ashes all fall down.

Wow...remember the days when no matter how partisan they were in the primaries, once they were down to the two candidates they actually tried to become more centrist? In the words of a very wise man (paraphrased), in the U.S., we need to return politics consisting of moderate competence with a low, but acceptable, level of corruption. In other words, we need to go back to a head cold rather than the metastasized killer that is politics in 2018.
