For the folks at home, Al Gore was the Vice President under Bill Clinton who'd later run for President and lose in the raucous 2000 election. He was married to Tipper Gore, and the two met at their High School prom. Later he attended Harvard, where he actually befriended future Oscar winner Tommy Lee Jones.

This is by far one of my favorite SNL skits. The whole "lock box" bit, and "strategery": political comedy at it's finest. Hammond was PHENOMENAL at impersonating Clinton, and then managed to pull off a great Gore. I think Ferrell delivered Bush without realizing he would have to maintain the character past the primaries and into a double term presidency... elevating him into "Hammond/Clinton" status. To this day, I'll use "strategery" to either enhance or lighten the mood of a political conversation, a topic I usually try to avoid. Those old enough to remember this bit totally lose their shit 😂 Those too young may not understand the significance , but they do understand the humor. Not sure if he was involved with writing this skit, but Will delivered it perfectly! A great reflection of that year's electoral options and the people's struggle to choose a competent leader. Thankful for the existence of KZbin. Though I'll never forget this bit, I'm grateful to watch it again nearly 20 years later.

Darrell Hammond's performance as Al Gore is all the more remarkable when you know the following: "Hammond says that he was medicated throughout his tenure on Saturday Night Live, and that he cut himself backstage and was once taken from the studio to a psychiatric ward. The incident helped him come to terms with...the post-traumatic stress disorder lingering from his abusive childhood. Just prior to his 2000 appearance as Al Gore in a sketch parodying that year's first presidential debate, he had a panic attack over not remembering his lines. After cutting himself up the length of the arm and putting a gauze pad over it, he felt better and gave a performance so effective that Gore's campaign staff made him watch it to understand why he had aroused negative reactions in some viewers."

Objectively speaking the body count of Cheney / Bush is still much higher. 190,000 corona deaths nonwithstanding. And also that of Obama (even though the deaths from his admin are more in other countries (Yemen, Syria, Libya). Bush, apart from the wars he started. The fallout from the Great Financial Crisis. Under Obama: big auto and the banksters were saved and the voters were thrown under the bus. 5,5 milion homes forclosed. The opiode crisis must have started under Bush (I am making an assumption), and needless to say the Obama admin also could not be bothered to step on the toes of big pharma in order to protect the public. Many people overdose, many people get caught up in addiction, families ripped apart, children in foster care. the violence that accompagnies drug dealing. people lose their sense of morality if they are seriously addicted. They can become good citizens again if they get and stay sober - but under the wrong circumstances they might kill or harm someone while crazy on drugs, a burglary gone wrong and the shoot someone while being stressed out, etc. Or they steal from close family and friends. (money from a beloved sister, the wedding ring the mother inherited from the grandmother, etc.) Addiction has a massive societal fallout. Unless a nation goes the path of Portugal. Needless to say Obama the neoliberal took did not use his platform to there is a big societal collateral damage from these drugs. Insuline costs 10 times more in the U.S. like the same product in Canada. if you are responsible for the healthcare of a nation - the wellbeing but also what it costs, it is not so much about the spectacular surgery. It is the normal, generic things that must function. How you handle prevention, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, and that people go the the doctor early (often that helps to minimize harm or allows for a full recovery). Untreated or poorly managed diabetes (rationing insanely expenisve insuline) is a disaster - in everyrespect. And it will result in high costs later, but that spending will not even get you good outcomes for the patients. The insurers and big pharma do not care about the misery or the high costs later - it does not harm _them._ Under Bush the law was introduced (or it was consolidated) that no government agency can negotiate drug prices. Only VA can (and they brought prices down by 40 %). The private insurers are not interested in the battle of giants, they just pass on the too high costs. It is not like the consumers could abstain from buying. Necessary treatments / drugs are not like consumer products, no one can stop buying if they think it is a rip off. Under Obama Big Pharma got more perks (ACA was a very industry friendly "reform", the government just props up the dysfunction with a lot of money. drug companies got patent extensions !). and then again under Trump (testing for drugs was already fast, and they are now allowed to progress even faster. Plus of course the tax cuts for big biz). 30,000 people die from lack of healthcare coverage every year (Harvard study in Obama era, with ACA). A more recent study puts the death toll more in the range of 60,000. That is 300,000 - 600,000 people in 10 years, and unlike corona virus it will not stop at some point. Democrats ALSO gladly accept that collateral damage resulting from their service for the big donors. Never mind Republicans.

From Darrell Hammond's wiki: "Just prior to his 2000 appearance as Al Gore in a sketch parodying that year's first presidential debate, he had a panic attack over not remembering his lines. After cutting himself up the length of the arm and putting a gauze pad over it, he felt better and gave a performance so effective that Gore's campaign staff made him watch it to understand why he had aroused negative reactions in some viewers."
