Nikolai Rubinstein, whom Tchaikovsky originally wanted to be the pianist, initially called this work "worthless and unplayable." As a result it premiered with Hans von Bulow as the pianist in Boston on October 25, 1875. Rubinstein later recanted his criticism and became an ardent supporter of the work. To this day this work remains as one of the best piano concertos ever to be written. George you play this marvelously, as a true master of the work. It is very clear that you have studied the nuances. Many can develop the technical ability, but to put so much expression and emotion into the music takes true talent that very few possess. That requires a true understanding of the soul of the composer. Your performance easily compares with Vladimir Horowitz's, and at your age that is especially remarkable. Thank you for sharing your truly magnificent performance.

I remember coming across a video of this chap a few years ago - he was around 10 or 11 at the time and played Beethoven Sonata perfectly - think it may have been the Waldstein. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the Tchaikovsky PC played so differently and with such clarity, expression and touch. You can hear every single note and every phrase makes absolute sense. Mind blowing for one so young.

Yes, very reminiscent of Cliburn...same sensitivity, passion and fury. Van would get so lost in the music that he would close his eyes and seem to leave this world. His nuanced phrasings were so ethereal and elegant. I hear a great similarity in George's phrasing, a warm, caressing tone like Cliburn's. I once asked Van 'where he went' during these closed eyes excursions. He laughed as if baffled and told me, "I really don't know -- just OFF INTO THE ETHER!" waving his extremely long fingers in the air! He was very spiritual, his genius palpable. I am feeling a lot of the same as I listen to this young man play. BRAVO!!!

George, I woke up at 3 am this morning, turned on my laptop and this was the first video that came up on youtube, I think i must have listened to it 6 or 7 times. All I can say is I was dumbfounded at your playing. And at the age of 14. I have listened to you play the piece several times and i truly think none are any more beautiful than this. You certainly captured the heart and soul of this music and at the young age of just 14. So much more so than pianists many, many years your senior. I have told you so many times, almost embarrassingly so, how much I love to hear you play but this performance shows what a truly gifted pianist you are. @@georgeharliono Just one more thing, George: we have too few great pianists in the world, regarding also unknown composers or comosers with just one or few piano works, such as Wagner, Strauss, Alban Berg ect. - wouldn't you fancy too explore this world a bit in the future? And please going to look for Carl Filtsch - an absolute child star in the 19th century, Chopin's best student, he died from tuberculosis already with 14. Filtsch even created some beautiful pieces, more unlike Chopin's style, more targeting Schubert. Look for Filtsch's pieces, you will love them!

I have created a KZbin playlist of many of his performances and listen on a regular basis as well as I share on Twitter and Facebook. I really love this young man though I only know him through his MAGNIFICENT piano performances.
