I actually met George Harrison at Donington Park at a motorbike race when I was about 10, 30 odd years ago. He struck me as a very polite and nice bloke even before I mentioned that I liked the Beatles. He had time for people and didn't mind signing his autograph. Decent bloke.

Great interview, thanks. George was always the funniest Beatle, not really the quietest Beatle. Loved it when he jumped from the chair when told Yoko had sat there. Yoko apparently got on George's last nerve. I guess she got on everyone's nerves except for John.

This is why I respect Ringo the most. He never lost sight of what this was really all about. Lots of money, drugs and sex. Whereas Paul became the consumate businessman and refined musican whose career would reach decades beyond the Beatles. John just went plain nuts. George got into all kinds of spiritual things and tried to shake off all of the material things of this world.

I've heard several differing opinions of George as a guitarist. Some say he was adequate but not outstanding. Others say he was way underrated. When I listen to his catchy little solo on "Hard Day's Night" or his beautiful riffs on "Something", I know he could pull off just about anything Clapton, Santana or Keith Richards could do. He had to play with more restraint than most guitarists because the Beatles didn't write repetitive 4 chord songs that lent themselves to 3 minute guitar solos.

They were all rather sarcastic. George was into the hippie stuff long before the others. He introduced them to it, actually to Eastern music, too. George had dozens if not hundreds of songs written by the time the Beatles went belly-up. His first album, All Things Must Pass, was made up solely of songs written while he was a Beatle and it was a huge success. Self-absorbed, negative, sarcastic ,,,; are you sure you're not thinking of John Lennon? ;-)
@49kasey12 жыл бұрын
You're so right, almost every classic old Beatle's song had a special touch by George that really marked it for young guitar players like myself who could never quite get it right. The riffs on "Help!" and that simple thing on "She Loves You", not to mention the one on "And Your Bird Can Sing". He never got the praise he deserved as an individual musician. Read about him, he started out really young and knew all the chords when he joined The Beatles.

You have no clue what George was about. He never "shoved" any god down anyone's throat, he was merely a seeker for inner light, real spirituality rather than the church-fed hypocrisy, and obviously you completely missed that. George was the last one in the group to take anyone for a ride, he didn't worry about being loved like Paul and didn't self delude himself the way John had. John never had an iota of the piece of mind that George enjoyed-EVER.

This is true of music made >2 decades ago. Due to the internet a lot of artists are blending musical styles left and right; a lot of music these days is unclassifiable because of this. George was very talented, and many believe if he hadn't been held down by having to pluck out the leads for John and Pauls songs he would have developed into as great a guitarist as Page or Clapton. "Had Clapton been their lead guitarist you can imagine the IMPROVEMENT!" Actually, I cannot imagine the Beatles without George's unique guitar stylings. He added more to the Beatles 'sound' than you give him credit. Sure, Clapton was a guitar god, and no doubt that he improved many tracks that he played on, but he completely would have ruined the Beatles as we remember them. The Beatles and Clapton's Cream (era) would NOT have risen to the top ...!

There is a whole film with their interviews, all of them, including their soundman and George Martin. Of course they don't say it directly. But they say what they say. Watch it. It's on youtube somewhere. They talk about how everything changed with Yoko there, Harrison says that he felt a "vibe" from her and that she was trying to get John only for herself and the band was a barrier to that.
@babylove41012 жыл бұрын
Probably the biggest hit George Harrison wrote for the Beatles was "Something". Frank Sinatra also recorded that and during his concerts, before he would sing "Something", he would talk about it and has always said that he thought it was the most beautiful song written.

Well, we're all entitled to our own opinions. All Things Must Pass was a good album in its own right. Those weren't really songs of the Beatles genre. A few of them were even covered by other bands - that were also not of the Beatles genre. George didn't show all of his songs to the rest of the Beatles. In their last 2 years he probably showed only a few as he had some earmarked for his solo career. I don't know why you've got such a hate on for George Harrison. That's not quite normal.

Well, good and valid point. What I think most people, unfortunately miss, is the fact that these were simply four young men at the height of their careers. That creates a lot of tensions that more mature people could have dealt with better. While creatively they had so much to offer as a band, individually they couldn't keep it together.

My first reaction when I see a title like that is, what are we the audience supposed to do about that or feel about that? People swear all the time. Reasonably speaking,paul and lennon were the heart and soul, respectively, of the group,but they wouldnt have been complete without the other two.Further,your critique of them is subjectively based only,and opinion based.IT may be true that Mcc. controlled some of ringos drum sessions,and directed them,so what hes not the greatest of drummers and harrison isnt the best guitarist,but both were pretty damn important to 'The Vortex' ,because without the combined power of 4,none would be history.

I disagree completely with your post. George couldn't belt out the rock like John but he sang just fine (ever heard a little song called Something?), his song Give Me Love was every bit the song Imagine was and where John was mean spirited and spoiled George was down to earth and wry. George had true wisdom and understanding, I admire John a lot but only until you put the time into George then you realize what how George was brilliant and simply overshadowed by J&P.

George is also my favorite, and I like all of them. He was so underrated. George was one of the few musicians who related well with Dylan, and that says a lot about Dark Horse because Dylan (my idol) didn't relate well with people in general. I love the one Wilbury video (think it was She's my Baby) where George looks at Bob and makes him crack up. I don't believe in the afterlife stuff, but I know Mr. Harrison will be remembered for a long, long time. Thanks for the post.

This reminds me of a clip of Crosby Stills and Nash supposedly dissing the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. I remember the 60's well. I was 9 when I first heard and fell in love with the Beatles. Being in CA in the 60's was a hell of a lot of fun, but remember they weren't really happy times. I don't remember posting that George was perfect, George was about the search to know and understand the spirit of god that resides in everyone, that is a lifetime search George never said "I got it-suck it!" and acted like he was be all-end all.Way to jump on my post like a rabid dog. I don't think George suffered from depression, I just think he was a quiet person who should never have been a famous pop star and perhaps not even married...someone who was supremely comfortable in his own skin. He always struggled with fame and attention and very relieved when the Beatles were over. After their last gig at Candlestick Park, while on the tour bus going back to the hotel, he remarked, "Right that's it then - I'm not a Beatle any more."
@FirstPlace9712 жыл бұрын
The beatles were jokesters living in jokester times and he probably didnt take criticism seriously which is acceptable.He is ranked number 11 i think on RS list and your limited knowledge of harrison fans is..limited.The influence of the beatles is widespread and almost evident in all mediums of music,so therefore,even if subtle or subliminal,george is just as influential,if not more so,then any guitarist you have listed.
