It's such a shame that the Titanic society have not raised money for a decent stone for such a brave man. He must have been so confused and terrified during the sinking, yet he stayed level-headed enough to be able to help lower the lifeboats. Bless you, George, rest in peace xxx thanks Paul for this video x

Argh , I know this graveyard like the back of my hand. In the 70s my dad and I would clear graves that were neglected.. sadly my dad a retired fire fight passed last year and I plan to visit and relive our memories… early in the morning there’s soo much nature and a lovely crb apple tree , the fruits were edible and my dad had ate them as a boy. A friend of his buried near an entrance was killed by lightening whilst sheltering under a tree. Thankyou for taking me around. Few tears.. love your broadcasts 💐

Paul, thank you sincerely for showing us and giving us this information on this unsung hero, I found this quite touching and sad that this brave man although in sheer fear did his best to keep the ship afloat for everyone has nothing to remember him, come on Titanic Society!! Give this hero a headstone which he is entitled to. And whoever stole the only acknowledgement of his name etc, bring it back please. Rip George Henry Gavell. To go back to sea? Very brave, sleep well sir xx

Aww Paul what a lovely video …I really enjoyed it …he should be recognised …I think someone should contact the Titanic society to get him a headstone…I have campaigned myself to get my grand uncles grave recognised in India /Pakistan as the Indian government took over looking after them in the 1940s …Army soldier who died at 27 …George would definitely have had PTSD…This poor man and I think that all of the survivors who were on the Titanic would have had PTSD …I really feel for what they went threw ….Thankyou Paul I love all of the Titanic stories and all of these videos…Best wishes X💔🥲

Nice video and it was of special interest as my wife is George's great grandniece and she has been working hard on locating the grave with a view to us hopefully being able to erect a headstone or some other marker in his & his wife Kate's memory. One point of order from her though, Cavell should be pronounced with the 'E' emphasised due to the name being french in origin (she is very particular about it lol) 😁

John George Jack Phillips, was a wireless operator on the titanic when it sank, he was from Godalming, there is a memorial to him at a family grave plot in the Knightingale Road in Farncome Surrey cemetery. Wondered if you would be interested in taking a look.

There is also a rather large memorial garden in Godalming in memory of Jack Phillips. A beautiful place. The little town also had a bar named after him with lots of information boards and photos of the Titanic and Jack inside.

Hi Paul, I echo the sentiment of other members, well done for tracking down survivors of the Titanic disaster and especially crew members. We hear about the wealthy passengers who lost their lives that night but seldom hear about the survivors, crew or passengers. I agree that the Titanic Society should be involved in installing a head stone. As there are edge stones around the grave, it is possible that there was once a head stone that either fell over for some reason or became dangerous and was removed. Maybe the Local Authority’s Cemeteries Division hold records to show exactly what the original memorial consisted of. Anyway, keep ‘em coming!

What happened that night doesn't bear thinking about. There are one or two other nautical tragedies worth looking into. One is the HMS Albion, whose launch at London's docks resulted in the deaths of 38 spectators. Another is the Victoria and Camperdown disaster which happened in the Mediterranean. That one was largely due to the commanding officer making what's generally known as a cock-up.
