Vance Davenport, on fiddle, was an absolutely extraordinary musician and one of the nicest people on Earth. I worked with him for a few months, in Vegas, with "The Roy Clayborne Show". He was 17 and could play circles around any other fiddle player I'd ever heard. I'll never forget how he begged me and begged me to take him to the poker room, at The Dunes Casino, after we got done playing. I finally relented and told him we'd see if they'd deal him a hand. They did. We'd played a few hands and Vance leaned over to me and said, "Guy - that guy dealin' the cards is my shop teacher at school!". Well, I got a phone call at about 8 AM the next day and we almost got fired as the house band at The Dunes....I got my ass chewed out in a big way. I had moved back to Michigan and one day the phone rang (don't know how he got my number) and a voice said, "Guy, you remember that little fiddle player that stood next to you on the stage at The Dunes?" It was Vance and he had just gotten a job with George Jones, bought a brand new Camaro, and wanted me to drive from Flint to Port Huron see him perform. I was tied up, with college, and didn't go. I will regret that for the rest of my life. Vance passed away at 46 from renal cancer. I still miss him. Rest in peace little brother. Thanks for uploading this video.

Hey Guy -- I really appreciate this anecdote. What a wonderful story and memory. After reading this, I watched him closely as he played. He really had a bow arm, didn't he? So smooth. All best to you and may you rest well, Vance.

George singing with no auto tune singing all live and in the studio. No dubbing. Best voice ever in country. George you filled them shoes and after you we have Allan Jackson and that's it. I'm sad the heart of country music is almost gone. I will keep your songs playing all 900 . Iove you George R.I.P Possum Still listening on 2022and to I die.

Love to hear him sing… one woman man. Love when he drops down to that beautiful baritone voice, Ron was awesome he never took his eyes off George. Love Tennessee Whiskey, hate how some cover it and trash it. Some things shouldn’t be messed with and that song is one of them. God Bless DAC and George

Carl was never the same after he left Sun Records. On the recorded version of "Matchbox" Sam got a really hard edge on Carl's guitar, that I've never heard him repeat on stage. And he just isn't the same. A really great guy though.

I just listened to the performance George did at ACL in 1980. (It’s on KZbin.) He sounds better on this 1990 performance. Sobriety? I don’t know. But he sounds fantastic here.
