George Lucas Calls Disney “White Slavers” in Charlie Rose interview (talks about force awakens too)

George Lucas has criticized the latest installment of “Star Wars,” the series he created, including "the last jedi". in an interview with Charlie Rose, described Force awakens as too “retro” for his taste and jokingly comparing the Walt Disney Company, which bought the rights to the franchise in 2012, to “white slavers” who had bought his children.
The hourlong interview, broadcast on Dec. 25 and released online this week, focused on Mr. Lucas’s legacy, which was celebrated at the Kennedy Center Honors this month. But he was harsh in criticizing the film industry for focusing on profit over storytelling.
At one point he said that filmmakers in the Soviet Union had more freedom than their counterparts in Hollywood, who, he maintained, “have to adhere to a very narrow line of commercialism.”
Mr. Lucas appeared particularly unhappy with the direction the “Star Wars” franchise has taken since he sold the rights to it, along with Lucasfilm, his company, to Disney for $4 billion. He compared the sale to a breakup and a divorce.
“These are my kids. All the Star Wars films,” he said. “I love them, I created them, I’m very intimately involved in them.”
He added, trailing off with a laugh: “And I sold them to the white slavers that take these things and. …”
Mr. Lucas said that he decided to sell his company in part because his filmmaking interests had changed and that the more experimental movies he wanted to make would not be financially successful enough to ensure the health of the company and the well-being of its employees.
Still, he said he had begun working on another “Star Wars” film before the sale, including preparing story treatments and “working with a writer.” But, he said, Disney was not “that keen to have me involved.”
“They decided they didn’t want to use those stories,” he said. “They decided they were going to do their own thing. So I decided, ‘Fine.’ ”
The film that Disney made, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide since its release on Dec. 18 and received mostly positive reviews from critics.
But not from Mr. Lucas. On Mr. Rose’s show, he criticized the producers and writers of the latest film for emphasizing familiar elements of his previous work - some of which he said had issues - over innovation and storytelling of their own.
“The first three movies had all kinds of issues,” he said of the original trilogy, which was released between 1977 and 1983. “They looked at the stories and said, ‘We want to make something for the fans.’ All I wanted to do was tell a story of what happened. It started here, and it went there.”
“They wanted to do a retro movie,” he continued. “I don’t like that. Every movie, I worked very hard to make them different, make them completely different with different planets, different spaceships, to make it new.”
Getting over “Star Wars” is like getting over a lost love, Mr. Lucas said. He told Mr. Rose that he tried to approach it the way one would approach the end of a relationship, by focusing on the future instead of the past.
“You have to put it behind you, and it’s a very, very, very hard thing to do,” he said. “But you have to just cut it off and say, ‘O.K., end of ballgame, I have to move on.’ And everything in your body says, ‘Don’t, you can’t.’”
On Thursday, Mr. Lucas apologized for his “white slavers” remark and backtracked on his criticism of Disney.
“I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologize,” he said in a statement released to several trade publications.
“I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks. Most of all I’m blown away with the record breaking blockbuster success of the new movie and am very proud of J.J. and Kathy,” he said, referring to J. J. Abrams, the “Force Awakens” director, and Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm’s president.

How do you think George really feels about selling his baby?

He wasn't going to use star wars anymore which was unfortunate. He should have at least made sure it was in good hands before abandoning it. It's a lost cause now in my opinion, it should have just stayed dead.

I bet he's regretting it now...He could have made new SW's films and used them to finance films he wanted to do but he sold it and now he has to live with it. At the end of the day Harrison ford got what he wanted his character killed off and Carrie fisher died while doing her most famous role alas Mark Hamill not so happy....

Well, he probably feels little remorse if any. We as fans were quite harsh with the prequels, and really haven't shown a particular love for Lucas himself. If he regrets anything, he may regret the current state of the franchise and its handling outside of his power.

I totally got his point that being age 70, he wasn't sure if he'd be around long enough to do another Star Wars trilogy justice, saying 3 films should take a span 10 years. He shows he is a lifelong learning and wants to continue to dispense his wisdom to other directors as he does small experimental films.

ScrewFearMe:. Charlie Rose came into that interview with a mission of supporting the awards show. Remember, he worked for PBS. Charlie was being a jerk and trying to trap Lucas into saying he really wanted this award. But, Lucas was giving it to him straight. And he doesn't have to leave a dope like Rose push him into saying anything. Lucas has FU money. He doesn't have to let himself be bullied.

Great interview. And probably the only time I heard an American director mentioning or using as a side of comparison Soviet filmmaking, with its stronger and weaker sides. Shows that Lucas is "in the know", so to say.

George is awesome. I don't begrudge him selling Lucasfilm to Disney, but I think Universal Studios or Paramount Pictures or 20th Century Fox would have done better than the abhorrent one that Disney has done with it.

Not that it matters, but I'm pretty sure he said *"White sleevers" - as in corporate executives in suits with white sleeves/dress shirts. He has used the phrase in a bunch of interviews when talking about hollywood execs. making movies for money rather than passion or creativity.

Nuh, I think it was "white slavers", but not meaning for it to sound offensive, rather a joke, because George himself is portrayed as someone selling his own kids within it. So yeah, context matters.

when lucas stopped making the films the over all quality and feeling that was once star wars was gone. i did see the force awakens and after seeing didn't like it at all. the falcons shots were great but the rest was too far into the future with leia's son and the killing off of han solo and now the solo film coming after the last jedi . i did find the last jedi a lil better then the force awakens but not much. its sad that disney would take this story and not use the written stories by lucas himself. a bad move imho.

The whole interview is being guided by Charlie Rose and his forthwith onset, this video only has 5.7k views after almost a year, and a lot of people have grown up and out of Star Wars. Having said all that, the real fans can watch this and appreciate what George Lucas says, because his legacy has inspired and molded certain human realities. That legacy will continue to do so in the hearts of those who care about the wisdom and hope it created. The Disney effort is mostly weak and doesn't make much sense in the long run, because the younger generations live on unfounded, inexperienced wisdom. Luke Skywalker was taught by wise leaders in the original Star Wars movies, which showed us, the audience, honest results. We don't see much of that with the new Star Wars characters. There must be feasible unity for all walks of life, not just the objective pop culture fanatics and the weak minded. These days, we live in a type of dark age where old technology competes with new technology and the young compete with the old in vastly different ways. The big ideas and industries that used to work in the past are up in arms and even our leadership in America is questionable. What has anyone done to make everything about a unified effort to accomplish another golden age? Who is real? Definitely not anyone in the recent decades and sadly maybe not anyone anytime soon!

Wait a minute. Popular movies don't win Academy awards? Are you kidding me? Maybe not popular with thirteen-year-olds but, if you look at the list of "Best Picture" Oscars for the last one hundred years, there are maybe a couple I wouldn't pay attention to. The rest are pure gold!

73challenger5031 Lucas is right. What was the last big box office film that won the Oscar. You have to go back to films like maybe BODY HEAT, THE GREAT GATSBY, THE WAY WE WERE, The Godfather. Films like that. Who won the Oscar the last three years. THE SHAPE OF WATER, and two other films no one said.
