Why do you think many new Star Wars fans can watch one of his works and then fall in love and just become completely fascinated with the Star Wars galaxy??? I know I did. Once I saw TCW, I was so impressed by the nobility and values of the Jedi Order and how most of them strove to uphold what they believed was their Republic. Lucas was basically an outsider (independent filmmaker) who was very successful. He created Lucasfilm so that he could have control over his films and avoid meddling from Hollywood executives. Due to his successes and wealth Hollywood resented him. Plus, Lucas also created ILM which Hollywood had to employ for vfx to stay competitive in the game of making blockbusters which, Lucas had revolutionized with Star Wars. So the Hollywood studios dumped on him and were also more than happy to dump on him through their surrogates when the Prequels and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out.

So I am gonna put myself out there, and express the observations I have from the perspective of a 27 year old who grew up being raised on the OG trilogy, but first saw a SW film in theaters with Episode 1 and has loved every film that has ever come out for Star Wars. (For clarification this comment is not directed at you Star Wars Theory, or against any other specific person, but just something that has been on my mind for a while and relates to the general narrative context being discussed in this video - iot is also a condensed version of my thoughts because, who wants to read a book on youtube lol). I am not sure how I feel about this shift in narrative when it comes to people (the fans specifically) wanting to give all this praise to GL. Not to claim he should NOT be getting it (because quite frankly I have never stopped praising the man who gave the world the greatest film franchise in existence period), but specifically in the context that all of a sudden, after what feels like (for me at least) an entire lifetime of people either crapping on GL for choices he has made with the prior 6 films, only to all of a sudden be singing his praises just because they have an issue with the Disney set of films. While I certainly can respect the opinion of those that dislike ANY FILM (SW or otherwise), this idea that somehow "GL should have made the New Trilogy" or "GL should come back to make more SW films" etc etc etc, is fair since a lot of the people (IMO) who are asking for it, are the same people who have been crapping on him since Episode 1 premiered. I mean even now, I see the narrative shifting to, "The prequals were pretty good" or "The prequals had some of the best moments" etc etc etc, despite those movies having not changed. Are any of the SW films perfect? Hell no, I can admit that, but (with respect) if people honestly think that the Disney set of films were so bad that all of a sudden there issues with the GL set of films is null and void, comes across to me as hypocritical. I like all the films, and frankly there is not one film I would go without, or not enjoy watching, and I will attest that I think Rise of Skywalker is the best film of the Disney Set, and Last Jedi was not as bad as people seem to attest (but again thats just my opinion - no shame on those who dislike those films), But regardless of those opinions, they dont CHANGE the GL set of 6 films and the way GL was treated by the fans BEFORE those films. I guess what bothers me is that it feels like peoples apparent hate for the Disney films is so great, that its making them act like its ok to forget that some of those same people hating on the Disney films, were not ALSO hating on the OG and Prequal Films and GL. How can hating one film make you enjoy a film you also (allegedly) hated? I mean its one thing or Hollywood I suppose to take issue with GL (regardless of how asinine the reasoning is) only to regret that decision later, but its another to me (IMO) for the fans to take issue with GL only to act like the alleged mistakes of Disney, Abrams, Johnson (etc) somehow undo the alleged mistakes that GL got shit for. IDK. Again this is a very condensed version of my thoughts on the matter.

Personally, I have never hated on Lucas. I was a fan of the OT while growing up in the 80's. I read the Thrawn Trilogy in the 90's. I was in my early to mid 20's when the Prequels came out, and I enjoyed them tremendously. I also enjoyed The Clone Wars. The only films that left me disenchanted were the Sequels. I thought TFA was bad for copying ANH (this was what I was thinking in the moment, while sitting in my theatre seat, as I was watching the movie unfold while it aped all of the story beats from Episode IV). I couldn't believe that the same people who were bashing the Prequels for not giving them the story that they were expecting were praising TFA for being unoriginal, uninspired and illogical. Marcia Lucas has stated my thoughts exactly that Kennedy and Abrams do not get Star Wars nor the Jedis (nor how the Force works). I do, however, like Rebels, Rogue One, Solo, the Mandalorian, and the Bad Batch which all came out under the Disney banner. But the Sequels do not feel like Star Wars to me.

I agree. the costumes in Phantom Menace are the best hollywood has ever seen. no movie can claim to have better costumes, and very, very few can claim to have as good. they are beyond compare. visually, episode 1 was one of the most striking, beautiful, and opulent movies ever made. Naboo and Coruscant are gorgeous, and even the pod race scene in Mos Espa is humbly breathtaking in a sense of almost feeing like a refugee city. Padme's wardrobe alone should've won an award, let alone the senate guards and the naboo aesthetics. The underwater Gungan city was like nothing anyone had ever seen. even the gungan swamps and naboo plains were beautiful. I really appreciated the stark difference between the opulent beauty of the Republic to that of the stark stoicness of the Empire. two totally different visual worlds. Something i like about the Mandalorian is that it shows another visual world, after the fall of the empire. where everything is in decay and disrepair. you can feel the 'new-poor' attitude of everyone in the Mandalorian series. it is what i imagine life feeling like after the second sacking of Rome. that was something the sequal trilogy failed to capture despite their stunning but meaningless visuals. they couldn't create a vibe the way the originals, the prequels, and Mando did.

I would love to be able to pay for my own movies and make them just the way I wanted, like George Lucas, if that’s true. Very inspiring. Though part of me shudders at the sheer work that must be involved, kinda feeling some of that now with just writing.

Episode 1 did get 3 oscar nomination for best sound, best sound effect editting, and best visual effect (the matrix won all of those awards) I didn't really like episode 1 but the costume design was incredible and it should have got an nomination though i didn't it deserve to win the catagory

I would not put too much stock in the costume thing though. That year (72nd Academy Awards) Ep I was nominated for Sound, Sound Effects Editing, and Visual Effects, and in all three lost to the Matrix. Costume design had the following nominees: Topsy-Turvy - Lindy Hemmingdouble-dagger Anna and the King - Jenny Beavan Sleepy Hollow - Colleen Atwood The Talented Mr. Ripley - Ann Roth and Gary Jones Titus - Milena Canonero I haven't seen any of these films actually, but Sleepy Hollow had both Ian McDiarmid and Christopher Lee in it, which is pretty cool. The rest are basically period pieces in an age of period pieces, with a touch of surrealism. In fact if you watch the trailer for Anna and the King it looks a lot like Episode I's worldbuilding portrayal of an idyllic golden age of peace before an era of conflict and change. And clips from Titus could fit right into a Star Wars film. He basically made a movie that fit right into the market in that time period (because Episode I was basically a scifi period piece itself), albeit with pioneering digital effects no one quite understood yet. So I don't think the fact that Ep I didnt get a nomination in any one category really is evidence that Hollywood dumped on George (even though it may very well have treated him this way).

I was a huge fan of the Original Trilogy. When I watched Episode 1, I left the theater disappointed. I think George over did it. But 2 & 3 were better and 3 Revenge of The Sith is maybe my 2nd or 3rd favorite. Empire being my favorite.

Of course the Hollywood studios hated George lucas. He stuck a big middle finger up to them by funding the sequels by himself and creating his own studio. There is no chance in hell they would ever forgive him for that.

He really did, the thing with George Lucas is hes the only Visionary Creative, Director, Writer and Producer that i know of, who has worked within Hollywood Town, made his movies HIS WAY, within the industry but has never truly been part of it. And Lucas become a huge success, he actually changed the way movies would look, and how they would be made, especially in the sci fi genre, and interms of SFX. George Lucas became a multi-millionaire from the colossal success of his movies, all while keeping the rights, especially interms of merchandising rights. I've always believed Hollywood Town was deeply resentful of George Lucas's huge success with Star Wars, because the rules of Hollywood are that if you write a story and want it made into a feature-film, you have to sell your script to a studio, they get all the rights, and then usually that's why you'll hear so often cases where the original Author of a story, or writer etc, was not happy because the studio, butchered thier story, watered it down, or drastically changed it up, to their liking for the big-screen. The Hollywood studios all practically laughed George Lucas out of town, none of them understood or even wanted to take the time to even try and understand and see his "vision", they just saw a "Giant walking Dog/carpet" and "laser swords in space", and thought it would bomb. Only pretty much one producer Gary Kurtz invested in George and it paid off big time, and the rest is history. But it's important to remember and realize that George proved them ALL wrong!! Even toy company Hasbro at that time didn't want to invest in him to make toys of his characters, and i mean those bosses back then must have been kicking themselves, pulling their receding hairlines out after they saw the phenomenon "STAR WARS" had become in 1977. This is the one main thing i've always took from George Lucas, to always believe in yourself, if you have a idea or a story anything, and you feel you've got something special, that you're really saying something, to hold onto that vision, or idea and work hard to turn it into something; and to NEVER sell it off but try and get it out there to the public conscious on YOUR OWN TERMS, because today it's very different we have all this digital technology, and the internet. This is why i've always greatly admired George Lucas. Lastly i think this resentment toward George may actually be at the heart of why Bob Iger, Alan Horn and one Kathleen Kennedy arrogantly chose to throw out his script treatments for ep7, 8, 9; and instead just make up the sequel trilogy as they went along. They really though they knew better, now that they owned Star Wars, that they could just rip-off and copy what George did and it would be a huge success. They were WRONG.

The star wars films 1-6 are almost perfect films in many ways. Music is perfect, set design and costumes are perfect, world building is one of the best ever. They came up with a unique aesthetic that is instantly recognisable and arguably the greatest in the history of fiction. The only thing that sucked was dialogue and yeah that did suck pretty hard and George's direction of the actors wasn't the best. But if those things were fixed all 6 of them would be masterpieces.

I saw the Star Wars costumes exhibit in NYC a few years back. They were impressive as hell. Especially the Amidala gowns. And yes, the slave Leia costume was surrounded by many creepy, greasy looking, 50 year old guys fitting every negative stereotype of the fandom.

The year episode 1 should have at least been nominated for best Costume Design, the award went to Topsy-Turvy. A musical period piece set in 1880's London. To give that an award and not even nominate the gorgeous costumes in Phantom Menace is diabolical.

I am a younger Gen-Xer and I always thought that the Prequels and OT were great. Each of these trilogies have their own distinct narrative, but feel very much like they belong in the same galaxy. The OT are a hero's journey (Luke's journey), and the PT are an Aristotelian tragedy (Anakin is a tragic hero). The two trilogies work well together, and in the end Anakin is redeemed.
@jbflynn41343 жыл бұрын
@@matthewduhn7906 in that case, do you think its possible for the ST to be redeemed if another trilogy was made mirroring the PT?

@@jbflynn4134 No, because I didn't appreciate the lack of originality in the Sequels. It's missing the "magic" and in universe continuity.

Man, if you were a kid around that time and didn’t think Darth Maul was the coolest bad guy you’re either a lying or wasn’t into Star Wars. That was one of the big things about the prequels, even if the story wasn’t all that good there was always something you can point to and enjoy (Pod Racing).
