1974 - Midway through Army Basic Training, Ft. Polk, Louisiana....my training company was on our one and only four hour pass we had during the 8 1/2 weeks of the training cycle....this song was playing at the local bar on post where a lot of us were sucking down the 3.2 beer......Every time I hear this song, it takes me back to a Sunday afternoon, Mid October, 1974, in western Louisiana....Great song, lousy location.

*Absolutely! Listen to it carefully, and you can't miss the KCSB sound! Disco proper was just forming up around the time this came out, and my understanding "from the professionals" is that Disco was "official" upon the release of "Billy, Don't Be A Hero" and [more importantly]\ "I Shot The Sheriff. I remember being confused around the end of '76: the golden age of folk rock was quickly being replaced, but not by just one new genre - several new genre's were being thrown up as "trial balloons" in late '76. Then Saturday Night Fever was released, and it was all over: Disco had won the war, and they won that war in just a single weekend. A week after Fever was in the theatres, the BeeGee's owned both the A.M. [traditional top-40] and the new F.M. [F.M. was very new, and had mostly "experimental" formats) The Disco craze (and it really **_was_** a "craze") lasted almost to Reagan's inauguration. I had mixed feelings about disco until it was ubiquitous (barely a week later) - then I started to really hate the format with a passion. I was SO happy when everyone got fed up with it and started bonfires out of their "collections"!*

Thinking it a great dance song for newlyweds and a personal favorite, I requested RockYourBaby at a wedding a few years back. When the DJ finally dug it up, things were starting to clear out but nobody, not a one, stepped onto the floor, everyone either oblivious or buried in phones. You'd think at that moment I'd have felt old. I didn't. Alone? Nope. Master works like RockYourBaby, suited to all loves, new and mature, transcend generaltional boundries. What I did feel was enlightened, amongst a group of attendees who had no rhythm, no soul and if there was love in the hall it was caged in a clique. Thanks, GeorgeMcCrae, and keep hitting those high notes.

I do get emotional sometimes too hearing songs from this era even though I was very, very young -- missing the feeling of our large family all together, no one had passed away yet, no divorce or family strife that I was aware of, simpler times, I remember the way the house & neighborhood looked, the smells and sounds of summer, the food mama made, what we watched on tv and the music that was ALWAYS playing somewhere in the background from the moment I woke up until it was time to go to bed. Thanks for sharing your memories.

What a wonderful song it was, and still is. In July 1974, this song (T.K. #1004) was number one; ironically, at number two was The Hues Corporation's "Rock The Boat." Just think, two "Rock" songs in the top two positions on the Billboard chart! (Side note: Many of us (including myself) have read that George McCrae died in 1986. Don't believe it for a minute! At last check on Wikipedia, McCrae is still alive and well. Also, just over a year later, his wife Gwen had a top ten hit of her own, "Rockin' Chair."
