What an amazing duet. George I think was only 21 or 22 when Aretha sang with him. She was a massive fan and even asked him to write and produce a song for her. Aretha was one of George’s idols and he couldn’t believe that he was singing what would be a Grammy award winning song. Fun fact this song was the only song that gave Aretha Franklin a number one in the UK in her entire career.

George Michael wrote about his experience recording this song in his book, Bare, saying that he and Aretha recorded the song together but did their ad-libs separately. He also praised producer Narada Michael Walden for being "brilliant" at getting a great atmosphere captured in the studio. He admitted to being nervous, but knew there was no point in trying to copy Aretha. "Nobody can emulate Aretha Franklin," he said. "It's stupid to try. I just tried to stay in character, keep it simple - it was very understated in comparison to what she did." He also revealed that Aretha brought with her "a big rack of ribs" to the studio. George had only not produced one song before this, as part of Band Aid for 'Do They Know it's Christmas'. He was so used to self-producing his music that he had a difficult time knowing when to stop singing. Walden later explained: "He looked at me with those innocent virgin eyes, like he'd never been told, 'you oughta stop, kid.'" Aretha loved working with George "The first time I heard George was with Wham! and I liked it then," she told Entertainment Weekly in 2017. "He had a very unique sound, very different from anything that was out there. When Clive [Davis] suggested we get together for 'I Knew You Were Waiting,' I was all ready. It reminded me of Jerry Wexler. We'd go in the studio and cut songs. If we were happy with what we recorded, Jerry would say, 'Let's wait until tomorrow. If we feel the same way that we do now, maybe we have a hit.' "'I Knew You Were Waiting' had that. Musically, it does not grow old." On the video, she added, "We had a super time. He was calling most of the shots: how he wanted this, how he wanted that. My older sister, Erma, just fell for him right away. He was very friendly and personable, easy to talk to."

The best reaction so far lads! The way you both felt about this song, is exactly how I felt when i first heard it in 1987 when i was 13/14! I used to walk me ma's mate dogs after school and I used to sneak into her living room and stick this on! Lad, I listened to it at least 5 times before actually taking the dogs out, and then id spend the next 30 minutes singing it whilst out walking the pooches! Ha ha ha, ha

he song went to number one in both the UK and US. It was George's third consecutive number one after 'Careless Whisper' and 'A Different Corner'. It also helped make him a huge solo star in the US, as it came out just before his debut album Faith. For Aretha, it was amazingly her only UK number one single. It was also her first UK top 10 since 'I Say a Little Prayer' 20 years earlier.

I remember when this came out and went wow he’s brave dieting with the queen of soul but he turned up and surprised everyone. We knew he could sing but this song is just perfect, it’s shows how good the pair of them were,, yet they sang in their own styles yet it flowed and worked. It still sounds great in 2021

I’ve seen a lot of GM performances, he always did that when he was performing with others. Very humble & down to earth man. One of my favorites was when he performed with a kid on X factor (I think, it was one of those shows lol), he knew he was just a guest for the duet and never *once* raised the volume of his voice above the kid’s.

I was too stupid to hear it at the time, but holy crap did these two sound great together. Back in `87 I already knew and felt that Aretha was the Queen of Soul, but could not yet hear how good of a singer that George Michael was. (I just could not shake that godawful Wham! vibe.) I'm so sorry it took his passing for me to appreciate him. (Lemme just add: Aretha is the greatest singer this country's ever produced.)

Hi guys, I have to say I believe you've become George's best new fans out there right now. And I enjoy and appreciate being able to witness your new-found enjoyment of George Michael. You've expanded more of his music than any reacters out there, Thanks! Just for a little fact on this one. George wanted to do this song with Aretha but wasn't sure she wanted to maybe even said no to, But she eventually said yes. She had to be really glad she did because this was her 1st. hit in 20yrs. Also notice whenever George sang with another artist, he did just that. He sang with them, never had to steal the show by taking over the vocals! To me again that's another way George stood far from other artists. He was & still is the best in many, many ways. Thanks, Guys, I'll keep watching!

It wasn't meant to be a duet The song was not originally written as a duet. Climie and Morgan pitched the song to Tina Turner, as well as to Aretha Franklin and Arista Records head Clive Davis. It was then Davis's idea to get Franklin to record it as a duet with George Michael.

The track was written by songwriting duo Dennis Morgan and Simon Climie, the latter of which formed one half of the duo Climie Fisher. Morgan and Climie met in 1983 after Morgan attended an Everly Brothers concert. It was the third song they wrote together. Morgan later told The Billboard Book of Number One Hits: "That was one of those songs that came out of mid air - a gift from above, if you will." It wasn't meant to be a duet

George Michael was a great singer, but Aretha Franklin was on a different level. No artist charted as many songs as she did, often named THE top singer (male or female) of all time. She had monster hits throughout her life, including many in 1980s, though perhaps still best known for her early hits in 60s and 70s. GM was honored to be able to sing with her. Aretha also could play music by ear on the piano, sang Gospel, opera and more. It is hard to even know where to begin on all of her contributions to music.

Bascom Newsome she had #1 In 1983 (“Get it Right”) on R&B charts, and many other hits throughout the 80s. She charted 112 times (Billboard), 5x as many as Michael, including nearly 4X as many on Billboard 100. Again, he was a great singer, but she was in an entirely different category altogether.
@mic1240

Bascom Newsome she had many #1 hits, perhaps you mean in the UK specifically? No artist has had as many charted songs, there is a reason Rolling Stone named her the top singer in history of recorded music.

@@mic1240 Okay... Sorry no was not specific enough. RESPECT became Aretha's UK breakthrough hit that year, but it would be a further 20 years before she scored her first and only UK Number 1 single - teaming up with George Michael on the chart-topping I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me).
@mic1240
@mic1240 3 жыл бұрын
Bascom Newsome both great singers. Aretha had 20 #1 hits in the U.S., and many others on charts. She may not be as known or appreciated in UK, was a considered a national treasure in US, sang across genres and had respect of so many in music biz. . The 80s were in many ways big for her, starting with the Blues Brother movie and song, and successful album during New Jack Swing era (and now joke her “Who’s Zoomin Who?” was way ahead of its time/Covid). She also sang duet with Annie Lenox (Sisters are doing it for themselves).
