Wonderful reaction to this song and video. The song is always been one of my favorites and over the years I've done a lot of research on the meaning of the song. It was given to her husband to use for the film at close range but the song was written about her mother. As I dug deeper into interviews she had given about the song when she would talk about it truthfully, and not be too big because she doesn't like to tell people what her songs are always about, as she mentioned it was about the lying that went on in her family. Then later on I found another interview talking about how they didn't tell her that her mother was dying of cancer when she was five. If you listen to the lyrics again knowing this, it takes on a whole new meaning. Also, I thought about the bridge of the song when she talks about running away and, the line will I grow old? And I know she wrote the song close to the age her mother passed at 30, I think this bridge is referring to her worries she might end up with the same cancer and not make it. This is only my theory but this song is always intrigued me and Madonna has written a ton of songs about her mom and the pain of losing her at such a young age. But Madonna always tries to be vague about it so people can determine their own meaning behind the song and I've always had my own thoughts for myself because this song is so powerful. It is the mark of an amazing songwriter to be able to put something so personal in such a way that it can be used in almost any situation you are going through. Big hugs!

One of my top 5 songs from her. When this song and video came out, it was a relief to all us true Madonna fans. We knew that she was here to stay. We knew not to listen to the critics anymore about her being a flash in the pan (as the saying goes). We now had the right ammunition to fight against the naysayers. Live to Tell was originally done for the At Close Range movie, starring Sean Penn (Madonna's then-husband) and Christopher Walken. Madonna's long time collaborator was in charge of writing the musical score for the movie. However, he was later fired. He came up with this instrumental song which required for a male singer to perform it. Nonetheless, he didn't find anyone. Here enters Madonna. Pat Leonard gave her the instrumental song. Madonna wrote the lyrics and in terms of music she wrote the bridge section of "If I ran away, I'd never have the strength..." In the demo version, you can hear at one point Madonna flicking pages of a notepad as she was singing from her handwritten lyrics. Live to Tell became Madonna's second #1 hit in the U.S. and her first U.S. #1 hit that was co-written by herself. In terms of Madonna's look in the video, at the time Madonna had just shot a movie called Shanghai Surprise which was co-starred with Sean Penn and the role Madonna performed required her to wear a late 30s-40's retro glamorous look. Madonna somehow continued with this retro look in the Live to Tell video. This was Madonna's first major image change and of course this was much-talked about at the time.

The secret Madonna is keeping is that Christopher Walken (Dad) killed his son playing Sean Penn's brother in the movie and is also his brother (Chris Penn) in real life. Chris has died in real life since. Sean Penn was also Madonna's husband and her contribution to the movie is this song. My thought is that Madonna is represented in the movie by the son's girlfriend and he tells her the secret of the murder. The movie title is also "Live to Tell" and it's a great movie.

It's Christopher Watkins and a young Sean Penn.... He IS his Dad who I think came back after many years, to try to reconcile and rebuild father and son..... The son discovers like oh shit my dad is into some shady shit.... Like weapons, larceny, murder,... This film was based on a true story about a father who was a drug lord. Actor Sean Penn (Madonna's first ex-husband) plays the older son, and his real brother plays his brother. The eventually kills his young son for switching on him in court, beat and raped the older son's girlfriend in a hotel while they were on thier way to visit the older son in jail. The film will take your breath away and give you goosebumps. Excellent film. With a perfect soundtrack. Which is my ultimate favorite movie soundtrack of all time, by the Queen herself.
