This song was the fifth or six single to be released from his Faith album. I believe it reached number one in the adult contemporary charts and eight in the hot billboard 100s. At the time it was definitely very unique for what was being played out on Pop radio. This song is pure genius and sounds just as fresh today as the day it was released. They had set up a special section on the floor for those of us that ended up having our view blocked by the projector. Jackpot again! Floor seats! He was fabulous! It was a fun concert. My mom was not necessarily a fan of George Michael, but she absolutely loved this song. My dad was a fantastic jazz musician, and this tune had the feel of the music he wrote and played. About 5 years ago, I stripped the first 30 seconds of this song and converted it to a ring tone and attached it to my mom's number. The intro to this song was what I'd hear every time she called or sent me a text. Unfortunately, we lost her to cancer about 9 months ago. Moving forward, whenever I hear the beginning of this song, I'll know it won't be from her calling or texting me. With that said, this song will forever hold a special place in my heart.

I think some people couldn't get past this being on Faith and it never did get the attention it so deserved; it is gorgeous. I love the way it bursts out at 3:16 with such intensity. He said it was about a relationship he had with someone who couldn't handle being with him because he was George Michael. He said "It’s very much a late night giving up feeling." - the use of the swing style of music sounded to him like resignation so he wrote this in that style. Nothing ever dull about GM - and most all of it autobiographical.

George's voice was perfection, like writers and singers of the 40's. I wasn't here then, but grew up loving the music. This song showcases his brilliant writing and singing technique, a tribute to the visionaries who created the lasting genre of jazz, almost untouched to this day. I've been listening to Symphonica a bit, and it's all there. this was probably the first GM song that made me say, "hold on a minute, this guy is actually pretty deep"... I'd be honored if some fans of late 80s/early 90s classics would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of WALKING IN MEMPHIS by Marc Cohn and PRAYING FOR TIME by George Michael on my YT channel in tribute to a couple of great standards of the era. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and peace.

@@tituspullo9210 the great thing about this is we all have our personal opinions and what sounds great to us. Freddy had an incredible range and powerful voice. George had the most beautiful velvety powerful voice, with also an incredible range. But, I think what George possessed was in the delivery of his songs He had a vulnerability passion and ability to make you feel to the depth of your soul with his voice and his interpretation. In my opinion that is incredibly moving and for me is the best. My all time favorite singer song writer!

@@carolenlancaster3491 You .... HAVE to be kidding me. I'm a musician. In fact, I've spent this entire morning finishing my album, doing remastering, listening to all the old songs, feeling pretty good. But I seldom think my voice is dead on, although I refuse to use auto-tune. A one-take wonder is VERY rare. There's always something to fix. But THIS song... Kissing a fool? I've tried singing it, I can sort of approximate it.... but it's HARD. There's a LOT of sudden flights and dives. I can't believe he just one-taked it. There's no way. That's impossible. And yet, having listening to so much of his other music... I actually believe it. George Michael was a musical genius. The world really lost someone special that day. I'm convinced fame killed him., as it often kills the geniuses.

Early on in his life he talked about this song. He said that he wrote the entire song on a plane ride. He wrote it start to finish including all the melodies and instrumental parts. He kept the song in his head for two years before he actually recorded it. He talks about how he never wrote in a traditional way. He wrote in his head first and if the song stayed in his head for a long time he knew it was meant to be recorded. He was a genius and magical songwriter. I can't imagine there will ever be another George Michael again. Many have tried emulate him but they can't come close.
