Yes, his live performerances matched his recordings and if anything were better because of his visible physical emotions. He had also been loved. Very few singers can match live performances with electronically improved and adjusted recordings. He was simply wonderful. I wished I'd seen one of live performances. Sorely missed. 💔

still sends shivers down my spine listening to this. perhaps one of the most beautiful and poignant love songs ever written, particularly when one understands the background to the lyrics. in case those that listen are unfamiliar, the song is dedicated to George's first love Anselmo, who passed away 6 months into their relationship. section 1 of the song described the love anselmo's mother had for him as a child and the pain of losing him. George and anselmo's mother meeting to visit at the grave and take him flowers, with George singing about losing faith. As she leaves the graveyard she tells him don't think that God is dead. part 2 is George speaking to Anselmo at his grave after his mother has left, and part 3 is George addressing God directly about how cruel life is and that he doesn't keep such love from harm. finally, part 4 is anselmo speaking to George either from the grave or just before he passed. powerful powerful stuff. RIP maestro x

There's also a lot of symbolism in the song. BTW, Anselmo was diagnosed with AIDS 6 months into their relationship, and died from an aneurism in the brain while getting treated with a blood transfusion about 2 years after diagnoses. George helped care for him during the short time they had. This happened not long before they started to have the "cocktail" of drugs for treatment of AIDS.

George is my all time favorite singer, my brother died at the age of 11 months and it turned my mother crazy for years and she never recovered from it, she later contracted Aids and was dieing and on her death bed I shared this with her that I always invisioned this song was about her when my brother passed and she cried and I cried and being able to share it with her instead of just keeping it to myself was such a emotional experience for me. There's lines in this song now I feel where directly written for me, her and my brother. No song will ever mean more or be more special to me.

I can't hardly get through this song without crying like a baby. It reminds me of the loss of my son at 36 years old, killed by a drunk driver. The extreme grief when you lose someone you loved so much by a sudden tragedy. A mother's heart broken, his love's heart crushed and life forever changed. I had a lifetime of memories, she only had a few beautiful months. The same God that took him is the same one I pray to for strength and comfort, that seldom comes. The cruel irony of those lyrics in the song get to me. He was loved and I know without a shadow of a doubt that he loved me too.

It's been a while since I watched this performance but just had to see it again after recently watched his documentary Freedom! '90. I also started listening to some of George's other material that I hadn't heard as I got older. Wow!! I am left breathless and speechless! I loved him as part of Wham! and when he went solo, I played many of his songs nonstop but they were more of the pop songs. Listening to songs like this is like discovering him and his music all over again and what a privilege that is!! His voice is like silk and the range of emotions, particularly for this song, are phenomenal! Sultry and smooth, like honey. 🍯 There's no other artist like him and I doubt there ever will be again. He is truly and deeply missed, not just for his music but also for the amazing, beautiful, loving, kind man that he was!! ❤
