i love the readings and the voice of the reader especially the final quote from 1984. "it's not by making yourself heard that you carried on the human tradition but by staying sane"

Thank You for this truly enlightening presentation on the life of Mr. Beal/Orwell. I felt the integrity of those interviewed throughout was something to behold. Their selfless devotion in shedding a proper light upon this man and his compassionate effort towards the betterment of mankind was a high watermark of BBC productions on one of their own son's.

I often think that, too. But then I reconsider. You might catch him on a bad day, in a bad mood (he was often unwell), at a bad time... you may be disappointed. Easy to forget that someone like this was just another human being, flaws and all. Probably best to stick with the ideal.

Orwell would have loved to see how the NSA brought his ideas to life and Fox News brand of distorted reality. It might be Big Brother yet, but Brother is in the middle of puberty at the moment.

GREG FREEMAN Indeed, yes! Most people don't know how much money the CIA pumped into promoting '1984'. It was made into grade A, anti-communist propaganda in the Cold War era. Which was none of poor Orwell's doing. He spent most of his life scraping & cadging a living. He would have wryly appreciated that! No free dollars while he struggled, yet plenty to lavishly entomb him in the anti-left propaganda machine post mortem.

@lionstanding I do think that people call others rightwing or "far-right" as a kind of Nazi accusation - which they'll level at anybody who doesn't support a particular agenda. No one worries about whether they're far-left; everyone is more relaxed about that, which is sort of interesting. Would being far-left mean being just like Stalin? The question doesn't arise, nor the fact that being Left or Right doesn't explain everything that was bad about either
