The iron throne, made of swords and uncomfortable to sit on is probably a reference to Yeltsin's saying that "you can make a throne of bayonets but you can't sit on it for very long". Yeltsin said this a couple of years before the first book came out. It's also possible that Martin and Yeltsin came up with the same metaphor independently. A throne made of swords/bayonet as a metaphor for a rule based on violence is fairly straightforward.

@Lone_Wolf_Media Жыл бұрын
If that's where the idea for the Iron Throne came from, then that's very interesting. I always thought it was a reference to the story of the Sword of Damocles, in which an aristocrat (Damocles) got to be king for a day with all of the perks of the position, but had a sword pointing towards him, hanging above the throne by a single horse's hair. The message of the story being, those in power should never be comfortable in it.

He wasn't a literal hunchback, but he did have actually pretty severe scoliosis. They found it when they found his body a few years ago. But that doesn't necessarily mean he was as bad in character as his enemies described. To be fair, I'm not sure when George was interviewed for this. His body was only very recently discovered and proven by DNA to be Richard III. Before that, most historians believed the reports of Richard's Scoliosis to be totally false propaganda. So if this interview is more than, maybe...5 years old? I think? Then Martin's view of it being all lies would have been the same as most credible historians at the time. I'm actually related to Richard III distantly. Probably some kind of cousin. We share a maternal line (our maternal DNA haplogroup is the same). Maybe it's just coincidence, but Scoliosis also runs in my mother's family. My mother and brother have it. Not as bad as Richard III, but not mild either. It's been very painful for them. It really sucks.

Kelly DeVries "I have no idea where George got the idea for the iron throne." During the hundred years war, when Henry V and his father were kings of England, they were at odds with, the king of France Charles VI, who ruled for 43 years, he started his Reign at the age of 11 and was acclaimed the title Charles the beloved, bet fell into insanity in episodes, as he got older these episodes would last longer, coining the name Charles the mad king. Charles believed he was made of glass, and when he was sat on his throne one day, he claimed that there were a thousand spikes protruding from his throne and piercing him.
@VerilyViscous3 жыл бұрын
On top of that, it's a rather unsubtle depiction of the Sword(s?) of Damocles, but instead of being over the head it's under the butt. Of course the king/queen of seven different kingdoms should be uncomfortable, they have to deal with the competing interests of hundreds of houses, from the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms to the lowest vassals, and each and every one of them could be conspiring to take that seat from you.
@nelsonfraser28004 жыл бұрын
No, he didn’t have a hunch back as such, but did have severe scoliosis. It seems entirely reasonable to me that like Chinese whispers this physical deformity was passed down through the ages and became a hunch back that Shakespeare put into his plays.
@Luanna8012 жыл бұрын
Agreed, but it is worth noting Shakespeare wasn't writing all that many "ages" later, only about 100 years after Richard's death. (That may sound like a long time, but in terms of history it isn't really. In Shakespeare's time there would still have been people whose grandparents had seen the actual Richard.)

Despite what GRRM says, Richard the Third did have scoliosis: noticeable in his vertebral column when they recovered his skeleton from that car park. It was definitely not as severe as Tudor historians tried to make out, but it was there, and would have been noticeable when his was alive!
@Lizzie-ve7kt2 жыл бұрын
Well…Richard the III did usurp the throne from his nephew and have all of his brother’s children declared bastards so he’s not exactly winning uncle or king of the year. Plus, he did actually have severe scoliosis that while not a hunchback, certainly gives more credence to the stories that arose about him and shows that at least in his case where there’s smoke there’s fire.

"16th century historians" equals two people - Bishop Morton and Thomas More senior. As the discovery of Richard III's skeleton proved, he was NOT deformed, he just had scoliosis. The angle of his curve was less than mine is after treatment (and I am definitely not disabled) and we know that Richard III was a vigorous, hard-fighting military man.

Considering that he accused his mother of adultery because he was the only one who looked liked his father the king. And thereby despose of his two nephews (The Princes in the Tower) because they were "bastards" and so have himself declared King of England. Hell, he even stole his younger nephew's NAME! If Prince Richard had become King HE would've been Richard lll not his uncle! So yes, Richard lll did come by his reputation honestly. Btw, I believe that it was Henry VII who had the two Princes murdered. He had no legal claim to the throne of England, his great grandmother had been Queen of England but she was French so she didn't count. He was living in poverty in the South of France in a rundown castle. So yeah, he was the one who had the most to gain from the Prince's deaths. Why do you think that Henry VIII was so effing desperate to have a son? To have a SON would solidify his precarious claim to the throne especially since there were others who's claim to the throne of England was much more stronger and legal his own. His own wife Catherine of Aragon, according to genealogists and historians say SHE was MORE English than Henry VIII and HER claim to the throne was more valid than his could ever be. So if she had been born a Scorpio she could legally despose of her husband and rule England herself. A Scorpio wouldn't have taken his shit for as long as Queen Catherine of Aragon did. A Scorpio would've clipped his balls. (figuratively speaking that is). 😏

It seems to me that having dwarfs in the bloodline of Targaryans wouldn't necessarily be bad, especially for the 'Dragonseeds' who are expected to ride the dragons. They'd be able to ride younger dragons sooner. And they'd be a lesser weight burden for the dragon itself as it tries to maneuver and fly. "In Game of Thrones, there is a controversial theory that Tyrion Lannister's biological father is the Mad King Aerys Targaryen, not Tywin Lannister, as is commonly believed."

That's not true; Hastings didn't help Richard take the throne. He helped remove Edward's son from the Woodvilles, helped to bring them down, and supported Richard as protector, but didn't support his bid for the throne (which perhaps he made in part to protect himself from Edward V when he came of age and blamed him for the Woodvilles' deaths); he was loyal to Edward V.
