As much as people give Martin credit for the realism of letting his characters die, his willingness to mutilate characters was always more impressive to me. Death can be glamourous, which isn't to say that the show doesn't feature plenty of gruesome humiliating deaths, but lots of characters die in ways that are dignified or even badass, that only make us admire them more and that don't allow the murderer to truly defeat them. Allowing Tyrion getting his nose cut off or Jaime his hand or Theon his..... y'know, is the quality of the series that best epitomizes the grisly and uncompromising reality of medieval times, choosing not to maintain his characters good looks was what truly elevated his stories over most glamorous, oversimplified, conventional fantasy. Can you imagine JRR Tolkien cutting off Aragorns nose? In the show, the scar makes Tyrion look more badass than disfigures him, it's a positive if anything for the viewers. In the books, it supplements his suffering and lends even more depth to this tragic characters story.

The cut off nose would have been more powerful. In the Gurm's version, from what I've read, Tyrion's motives are much more ambiguous when he goes back to King's Landing. Having a hideous, vengeful dwarf with no nose who killed his own father and sided with the Dothraki to raise King's Landing with a mad Targ would have been a much more interesting ambiguity. They dont cast pretty actors because they are pretty, they cast whoever is best for the role from the available talent, it just happens that the vast majority of professional actors also happen to be quite attractive... it kinda goes with the territory. I am a professional musician, I know hundreds of professional actors, musicians, dancers etc and I could list the ugly ones on one hand. If you want proof, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is it. Fleur is supposed to be the most attractive girl you have ever seen, but the girl who plays her is only mildly attractive, they could have cast many french actors in the role who were much more attractive but they didnt, because it mattered more that she could actually act.

I don't understand why people care so much about Tyrion's nose.. They don't have to copy the books, especially parts that could be avoided.. Tyrion getting his nose chopped off didn't make any difference for me reading the books except for his constant itching. People saw him as a monster before and after his nose was cut off.
@brauliogomez90214 жыл бұрын
Yeah, obviously not a major plot point, but it is a nice addition in the novels as it shows what Tyrion's rewards are for helping those who call him monster. He only became more monstrous to those who see him rather than gaining favor for acting so valiantly.
@romeocastillo3164 жыл бұрын
I haven't read the books but I think the perception of Tyrion as a character would change. Peter is handsome irl, and charismatic. I understand it's quite a departure from the books. Not only the nose.
@SauronThePuny4 жыл бұрын
They didnt ignore the books altogether Tyrion still got a scar, anyhow I cared more about Dany and her brother's eyes color, I think it would've made them more divine, but that also would have not fixed the horrible storyline we've ended up with.

There were bigger changes, Tyrion and Jaime not having a fall out. Tyrion after storm goes to really dark place. Instead show tries to portray Tyrion as a pure good guy

I'm 500+ pages into the first book. Robert Arryn being changed to Robin, the omission of Blackfish and the way Ned's leg gets injured in the confrontation with Jaime are some of the only changes I've noticed from the adaptation. Nothing too crazy. Why couldn't they keep doing that?
@thenotsopro8932 жыл бұрын
What? Blackfish was in the show
@SorceressWitch2 жыл бұрын
@@thenotsopro893 They mean Blackfish was in the first book which season one is based on. Blackfish in the show appears in season 3 which is the time of the third book. In the books we are introduced to him when Catelyn arrives at the Vale of Arryn to bring Tyrion as a prisoner. He was serving as knight at the gate but will leave and join Catelyn then meets Robb and fights for him. He was not happy with his niece not sending soldiers to help fight the war and resigned. Roose Bolton in the show only appears in season 2 while he is in the first book and leads a large part of Robb's army against Tywin at the battle of the green fork. Robb leads the rest at the battle of whispering wood. In the show this is different, Robb in the show sends 2000 men to be sacrificed against Tywin at the battle of green fork. While he leads the 18,000 others against Jaime at whispering wood. Jaime has a larger force than in the books. The 2000 sent against Tywin never had a named commander so we don't know who lead them. In the books Roose Bolton had been given most of the army against Tywin and lost 5000 men against Tywin in the battle of green fork but the rest survived in retreat. Robb lead around 6000 men to capture Jaime at the battle of whispering wood. The books and show have differences though the show went past the books as the books are unfinished and so the seasons 6, 7, 8 have much bigger changes. The changes in earlier seasons weren't as much of a big deal compared to later, which is why people noticed the writing getting worse but still not a good series. Even though I prefer books, I can't say many fantasy shows have been able to top GOT show. They made blunders after season 4 but still did a good job for a TV series.
@felisasininus17842 жыл бұрын
There are a lot more changes in the adaptation of the first book. A cr*p-ton of characters were cut for example. Then what would eventually happen is basically butterfly effect, where relatively small changes in first season will lead to enormous differences in later seasons. That is what happened with the HBO adaptation, and that was all before everything went to s***.

This is one of the more obvious answers, I've seen so many people whining and complaining about the show not having a noseless Tyrion, when it's seemingly evident why it's easy to write it but clearly not going to be cost effective or practical to do in the show (I'm just sayin' ✌️)

@Anjelica Snorcket Um what? All the actors were more handsome than in the books. That is called TV and movies. No one wants to look at ugly people on TV. There are very few dwarf actors in Hollywood. And almost none are as skilled as Peter Dinklage. He was born to play Tyrion. He was the only one to cast unless you wanted them to digitally shrink someone like they did in the LotRs and Hobbit which would have cost a fortune.

This is among the adaptational changes I don't mind at all. While Tyrion in the books is meant to be quite unsightly, Peter Dinklage is actually rather handsome. I think it lends credence to Tyrion's added charisma. And frankly, it's hard for me to imagine anyone else as the character.
