I was in a Star Trek club in college, when he came to speak at the university. Some of the club members were invited to have lunch with him, and, not being told otherwise, passed the invitation along to anyone in the club who could make it. My roommate and I went, and were told that the lunch wasn't open to just anyone...but George overheard them and immediately insisted that we be let in. One of the most gracious people I've ever met.

This man, as a child, lived through the heinous incarceration of Japanese Americans in camps throughout the country. His family were in Arkansas. Our country has never done enough to apologize. That Mr Takei rose from that to become a literal legend speaks to the magic that is, at times, America. He has most surely lived long and prospered. Kudos.

I mentioned this in an earlier comment, and might again, but he wrote a really good autobiographical graphic novel, "They Called Us Enemy" about his experiences.

I'll never forget the day I met George Takei at a convention. My brother and I went when we were kids, and George was doing a panel there. We got to go up, shake his hand, and take pictures with him. Somewhere in my house, there is a picture of me, my brother, and George all posing with the Vulcan hand sign. Very funny, friendly, and respectable guy.

George Takei is awesome, a real treasure. I’m from Arkansas, where he and his family were first sent to an internment camp during WWII. (In the east Arkansas Delta, not a hospitable place and definitely not somewhere I would choose to live.) He has made a point of coming back many times over the years to speak on the subject, especially through the Clinton Presidential Library and School of Public Service in Little Rock.
