Always use some high temperature anti seize on those EGR bolts. To avoid spot corrosion, cover them end to end.

I find your videos really helpful :>) I replaced my EGR valve on my 2010 E92 N47 2.0 diesel just recently. The EGR valve is a different type and it was a pig to get out. Both torx heads sheered and needed to be drilled and extracted out. The OEM replacement EGR value part had longer coolant pipes that fouled the cooler so ended-up having to shorten and file to ensure a fix. One of them snapped and left part of the pipe in one of the EGR valve coolant canals so that needed to be extracted out too. The interference fit of the EGR value and the exhaust manifold is very tight so ended-up using some copper grease to ease fitment. All sorted now thank goodness. Your videos gave a great step by step guidence.

By way of an update: the OEM EGR valve I fitted isn't OEM after all. It looks original but sadly seems to be an imitation. It is failing after just over one month of problem free motoring. The fault codes that my cheap mobile phone app (Torque Pro) can detect comprise 1) Insufficient gas flow detected from EGR valve 2) EGR valve stuck open 3) EGR valve stuck closed (yes really). As a consequence, the engine has stalled a few times and can idle rough at times. Disconnecting the EGR valve electrical connector triggers the engine management light in the dash but has eliminated the stalling and rough idling so far. This suggests to me that the EGR valve is operating outside of it's expected operating parameters (or at least it's electrics are communicating that to the ECM or PCM maybe?). The ERG valve will need to the replaced with a BMW original part I suspect. That'll teach me not to try and cheap skate on eBay with procuring some junk intimation part.

Hey George another nice thing to do is replace the alternator pulley with an AOP one. Along with changing just the controller instead of the whole alternator. 60 pound fix total.

On my Lexus diesel the bloody EGR was solid with suit. Its a fine needle that sticks. I used methylated spirits (works really well to remove carbon) and a scraper and electric toothbrush, don't bend the needle! It will make your car run smoother and avoid puffs of smoke coming from exhaust when you apply throttle, that;s my experience anyhow.

Except for some soot on the valve, there should be no reduction in its intended job performance. I believe this was still fully functional and did not require cleaning at this point in time.

Hi I just wanted to take the time to say thanks for uploading the video I have a 118 Diesel and with the help of your video and 1.5 tins of Mr Muscle later i have a clean cooler and EGR valve. All went back together with a few cuts on my hands but am pleased to say engine management light is out and staying out. Hopefully no leaks but early days at the moment for that. Thanks once again what many people on youtube has forgotten is more than I know on cars. Many Thanks once again & keep up the good work. PS looking for a Red Leather set of full internals for 3 door if you happen to know of any.

I use heat graphite base grease on threads in hot areas so it is easy to be removed later. It is called neverseaze.

How many times a week do you re-torque the bolts you've done this to? Use CRC Freeze-Off and instead of letting your bolts vibrate loose, it shrinks the bolt you spray it on and releases it from the threads.

@@gregtaylor6146 Your'e right Greg! Just had to ask him what the bloody thing was and it turns out to have been a Citroen PICASSO not a Passat. Two hours of removing one thing after another, never again! Four clips on my Ford Ranger air filter box and it's out.

Having similar problem with my f10 dpf pressure too high, charging pressure too low and air temperature sensor. cleaned the inlet manifold and found a broke rubber between the cooler and manifold. Problems all started when it was recalled for egr cooler.

EGR looks really clean even before removal - You should see mine in Vauxhall's 2.0DTi with 180k miles on clock after year on short distances ;) One plus: EGR in this engine is on top of intake - so only engine cover removal is needed to acces (and two screw positioned upwards)

Cheers George, ill need to do this on mine at some point but will order new bolts and a gasket before hand :). I always find carb cleaner also works great on removing carbon deposites

I have a 2004 renault scenic 1.9dci . I just inserted a blocking plate to the egr rendering it surpluses to requirement no problems just some peace of mind.

Thanks for your info video 👍 Currently trying to find a mechanic that wants to change my rocker cover gasket as it’s weeping on exhaust side and once engine/ exhaust is hot, begins smoking as the oil makes its way onto exhaust manifold. Several indie guys don’t want to touch it as they say they’re afraid of breaking injectors 😞

I take my EGR valve off annually, I fill it with Carb cleaner & leave it overnight, clean off & reinstall. I also clean the galleries before replacing.

I used polystyrene liquid cement to clean gas plug on SLR rifle, takes carbon off very well

That's because polystyrene cement uses acetone as the evaporating agent. You could just use neat acetone in a well ventilated (outside) area.

Hi George, Quick question, just bought a E91 and the pipe you called a crank case breather pipe, has tape around it I'm assuming to stop some kind of leak, would this tape affect the egr valve and bring up error codes, I currently have codes for egr showing. Maybe a change of this pipe is my answer? Many thanks

I just did the Guibo/Flex Disc on mine and centre bearing and centering sleeve but it did not cure my downshift clang so it is in a local gearbox specialist here in Kyiv, being fixed. Will let you know what they found and cost of repair soon ...

The car is coming close to 65K and I think it's going to some lifetime fluids changed for transmission and rear diff plus a engine oil service. Garage will be happy...

For anyone with an e92 there's an etorx screw to be removed from the back of the air intake pipe. Not sure what size as i didn't get to remove it. Wish I'd known before taking off the bottom clip, top of the pipe and cracking the crank case breather hose!🙃

While it’s open get a look inside with an endoscope camera. You may well be shocked by the crap state of the inlets.

Disconnected the EGR vacuum hose from on my E92 320d N47 engine and done about 300km. So far no engine lights have popped up and I have to mention I have not remapped the ECU. Noticeable gain in power and MPG. Dont forget to seal the vacuum hose using a screw or something.

Oil catch can aswell to get rid of the crank case breather hose. Will definitely make the life of your engine last longer

I s'ppsose in case you can't find allen bolts, you could use normal hex bolts. They should work fine. 👍👍👍👍

Ah over cleaner, this reminds me of cleaning the variable vane turbo on a mk4 golf tdi, I emptied half a can into the turbo, left it for half an hour then drove the car. It was a good temporary fix as it did get rid of some of the carbon build up. I am looking to do an egr delete on my car in due course, a good clean sounds like a fine option for now.

You 100% need to use a vacuum pump attached to the actuator to move the veins while doing this, a lot of people skip the vacuum pump part and it doesn't work

I have a 2012 bmw x3(f25) 2.0d. N47 engine. I was driving the other day the car started jerking for a few seconds and then went into limp mode with a drivetrain message on the idrive. It was still ok to drive but with a loss of power. Once i switched off the engine and restarted it 5 mins later the warning had gone and the car drove normal again....the following day it happened again. I checked errors with my code reader and it gave 2 faults to do with the egr valve. Drove it for 2 days after this with no errors or warnings but I'm sure it will pop up again soon. Do you think I need to do the remove and clean and replace on mine?

I did mine then looked inside the inlet and had to buy a spare inlet manifold because it was so clogged up. And had to clean out all the inlet ports on the engine. Can't belive how much these clog up.

Better still remove the EGR valve and blank it off. Remove the swirl flaps. Cut open the DPF filter housing, remove it and weld it up again. Then install a custom map into the ECU et voila a full power BMW.

My bmw 120d (65 plate) was supposed to go in for the EGR recall which bmw never told me about. The engine caught on fire last week and they’re investigating atm. I’m sure they know it’s because the egr malfunctioned and caused the engine to set on fire since they’ve given me a brand new 71 plate 5 series courtesy for the next 3 months.

When i press the valve in and plug the vacuum hole with my finger, the valve moves and it only has a little vacuum left when relase the finger. Doest that means valve is leaking?

The pcv filter is something that's over looked a lot . It's worth changing it a lot more often than your ment to .

Remove blank ecu delete never a problem again obviously if you have dpf it will need modding and map to suit

Question, the first front section that you removed, the one before the air filter box do you have both holes cut or just one, I'm asking because my mechanic lost mine and found me another one with just only one hole cut, but I remember mine with both of them cut open

For the uninitiated, the original brand of the EGR valve for the car in the video is Pierburg. Cost of the valve in BMW 245 euros. Price on AutoDoc 144.70 euros. Obviously we are talking about a new valve.

George, I'm going to make a start on this on mine. I regret not doing it once I discovered the engine light that keeps going on and off. Scan said egr. However yesterday on the roundabout I dropped to 2nd gear and floored it to 40mph, the car when bang! As if pressure built up and blew out the exhaust. Car then went on to half engine power mode. Parked up had a look couldn't see nothing. Got to my location with half a power doing 30mpg. I discovered the manifold actuator "arm popped off" the bang was it didn't open the swirl flaps and pressure built up. So causing the arm to come off. Now I've glued the accuator arm back on. Feels like the small metal clip that holds the spinning bit is lost for ever. Should I clean the egr cooler aswell? Since I am cleaning the egr itself.

@@GeorgeAusters oh I already fitted one in April. Stupid of me not cleaning the egr aswell. The egr in the winter has been playing up. I found out the big intercooler pipe from the anti-shutter valve came off even when I stuck it with gorilla tape. The bang was from that pipe. Ivd cleaned the egr today. Didn't look to bad for a 148k mile car. I think the egr cooler may be the problem. Scan tool said egr. That's about it.

After cleaning, my car is running very bad. I have to rev the car for a couple of minutes until it can drive stable. My egr is slightly different than yours 118d n47 2010. Is there a way I can just disconnect vacume limes so I can drive the car again until I can rectify the problem

My e90 320D has a different type of EGR valve, it's not round like the one in the video, anyway after removing both bolts I cannot separate the egr, its completely seized, tried mallets and hammers and alot of brute force but still no joy, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi George, another great Vlog. Would the condition of the EGR be a good induction of the carbon build up in the inlet manifold? Mine is running fine but would like to inspect it and clean as required. Also is there any way you can feed an endoscope into the manifold to check rather than strip it down un- necessarily?

You can remove the intercooler pipe to see through the anti shudder valve into the manifold. I’ll be removing mine soon👍🏻

lots of fire due to EGR valve and egr cooler cracks in Korea.. so BmW korea decided to recall. no recalls in UK?

Hi George, I have a Bmw E46 320d 150 HP with the m47 engine. If I have the egr working the car smokes like a train and it doesn't seem to have as much power, on the other hand, if I cancel it the car doesn't smoke as much and seems better to drive. My injector values are ok and the egr valve has been cleaned. Should I keep it on or should I remove it? Also, it seems to use more fuel with the egr on.

get rid of the egr and dpf, get them both mapped out and then removed, your car will run 100% better and will have a longer life

Hi. Thank you for posting the video, although it might be obvious to some I did find the part about giving the valve a knock for removal useful as I was scratching my head for a while after removing the two bolts. I also have the N47 engine in my BMW 1 series (120d). On cold start-up I have a rough idle, the revs bounce up and down between 800-950rpm for just over a minute before then staying at a set idle rpm. When the engine has been driven and allowed to get warm this doesn’t occur. Do you happen to have any idea(s) what this fault could be due to please, if it is a fault? Kind Regards, David.

I had the same and went to may fixes until I replaced the glow plug module and now uts fine

@@verdej2057 Thank you for the reply. I replaced my glow plug module but still have the issue of the rough idle on cold start. I’m considering getting the glow plugs changed but as you might know this comes with a risk. I’m not sure what else it could be, perhaps I’ll get it checked over by a BMW specialist.

@@David-xx9cp i replaced the glow plug too so i could of been that, they had heavy build up on them and one had actually melted the tip of an injector so that had to be replaced too. Before seeing a specialist perhaps get a cheap code reader from amazon and see if you have any glow plug or injector activation faults. Fuel filter change and crank case breather should be done too but are very cheap.

@@verdej2057 I did have a feeling that it could be the glow plugs as they are needed for start-up although my reader hasn’t picked up on a fault. Interestingly I noticed when it was very cold in the mornings a few weeks back, the engine didn’t do the rough idling at startup and instead the engine was happy to sit at a set higher rev. I’m now thinking is it to do with the coolant system..

​@@David-xx9cp Fuel pressure sensor on the high pressure fuel pump. OEM should be around 120 bucks, but going with an used part is ok. Found mine for 30 bucks used and it's all resolved.

I thought if you remove the egr and dpf your car is illegal to use on the road George correct me if I'm wrong my car would be tter of without them but what the emissions like and penalty if you get caught?

EGR removable is usually undetectable. Same for DPF if you open it hallow it out and weld it back up again when fitted the MOT tester cannot see the welds and isn’t allowed to go looking so Aslong as it’s visible and looks factory it’ll pass

From the hood. Its not exactly from EGR part, but when I accelerated on steep road, my car lost power (it was lagging already but this was like worst) I had to stop. I opened the hood and there was smoke. Smoke is also coming out from the exhaust which was not the case before cleaning.

@@GeorgeAusters thanks for replying 🙏 I read a couple of articles that mentioned plugging the car in to something called ISTA so you can set adaptations after installation of the new egr and also other people saying no need do anything so just a little confused as to what's best or nesseccary.

@@MrMaximo10 unless you combine it with a complete remap, your NOx sensor is likely to send your car in limp mode, your fuel consumption will noticeably go up, with the N43 being a lean-burn engine, overfuelling will pretty quickly destroy the cats, on top of that the engine will have an increased chance of knock and you won't pass emissions testing as the CEL will definitely keep turning on and NOx levels will be above Euro 4/5 limit depending on your model year. I'd be more worried about the timing chain and guides, oil pump and injectors than an EGR delete on an N43.

Question people ... my dpf was modified before I brought the car.. basically my question is if my dpf has been drilled out and I'm getting that funny blocked dpf smell could it be my egr valve causing that same smell? Any info would be great m.o.t in 2 weeks and don't want it falling on emissions..
