A lawyer is just anyone operating on behalf of someone in legal action which a degree in law isn't required to do, indeed in the vast majority of court cases in the UK nobody has a lawyer because the majority are County Court claims where the value would be much less than the cost of a lawyer. You are your own lawyer until you appoint another one for yourself if required, so he could technically be described as a lawyer even if he's never taken payment to defend anyone in Court. If you don't believe this then try taking him to Court for false representation as a lawyer and find out how quickly you lose.
