The woman’s voice is actually so beautiful and antique-like (?… I don’t know how to describe it haha) but it reminds me of the voice of a faceless mother singing a lullaby to a baby in an old Disney movie from the 40s. Sweet and soft and round-sounding. The actual melody probably contributes to that feeling too, with that C natural in bar three that everyone is talking about and the following measure too, the F to D flat progression

@thatsroughbuddy14072 жыл бұрын
What does 'hold water' mean?
@NOLASkaGuitarist2 жыл бұрын
@@thatsroughbuddy1407 Pretty much means "is good" or sounds nice or moving by itself. Think "hold up to scrutiny", the phrase comes from building things. If the construction was done well then the pieces will fit so well together that it can "hold water" without leaking meaning it's built soundly. People often use it when referring to the validity of an argument.
@ovecka172 жыл бұрын
do people not write melodies like this? ive always checked the melody by itself (often when i write thing its starts as an improv melody anyways and then i work from there), it seems like common sense if you have a strong melody in a song

@@thatsroughbuddy1407 it doesn't need anything else. It can stand alone. The melody is good without the music. A bucket that can hold water without any other help is doing it on it's own. Both accomplish the job well with no help needed. That's how I interpret it.

@lifeonhigh8512 жыл бұрын
I don't think the violin playing the root notes would be great because of where it's tone is at. It can't play high enough for a good sounding root tone and it can't play low enough for proper bass support. It CAN be in the middle, but roots in the middle just don't sound as moody, which is what this whole feel is. We just need a bass, that's all

Which Type of Music is this? Which other songs use this chord progression? This reminds me of a long gone decade. Does anybody know which decade this type of music would come from?
@Un1234l2 жыл бұрын
It's some kind of jazz. You can find this harmonic flavour and chord progressions still in non-modern Western music, or non-Western music that's still influenced strongly by Jazz, like modern Japanese music, soul, R&B. Of course you can also look to older Jazz music to find it. Try Legend of Zelda, or music composed by its main composer, Koji Kondo. I hear the File Select music from Ocarina of Time in this. If one were to describe the flavour of the chord progression generally, it's a chromatic modulation of chords giving it that whimsical flavour the last few measures. Maybe Alicia Keys' Prelude to a Kiss is similar enough in that regard. Christina Aguillera's Hurt.

Personally, it reminds me strongly of ‘30s/’50s Disney and similar musicals of the era. Very soft, nostalgic, simple but romantic. Indeed, when I heard this it reminded me of Cinderella’s, “Oh, Sing Sweet Nightingale.”
@xen0vantage5422 жыл бұрын
The reason why I find it sounds so old timey and nostalgic is because of a few things. 1. The chord extensions add a lot of color. 2. The first 2 chords are actually a part of a ii-V-I progression, a very common chord progression in Jazz and thus gives it a "Jazzy" sound". The third chord is a Bbm so its actually a ii-V-vi progression which is also colorful. 3. The voicings of the chord and specifically the melody of the girl works really nice with the progression. On the third measure with the Ab(b9), she sings from an Ab to C natural, and the C natural adds a lot of color and tension because it is clashing as a tritone with the b7, Gb. She then "resolves" (She is just singing randomly so quotations) to an F and Db which is the 5th and 3rd notes of the Bbm chord, respectively. This adds a nice tension and release, which is what Jazz loves to do. 4. I'd also say the timbre, or the sound of the piano arpeggiating up and down is also what adds to the colorful pallet. It creates a dreamy feel/sound. I'm sure there's more to it than what I explained, but from a quick glance that's what I noticed. The tension and release is definitely a big part of the classic nostalgia sound. As for where to find this music, this is mainly Jazz from the era of roughly the 40s-60s. Movie scores from the era like "The Uninvited" also use progressions like this. I'm sure there's music after the 60s and now that still use these things, off the top of my head though this is for sure Jazz.
