true and after his death hershel became my new favourite as he stepped into his shoes. After Hershel died there never was another character I could emphasize with like that again. It felt like from S5 on they just completely abandoned the realistic survivor aspect focusing on interesting compelling characters and instead focused entirely on how weird and over the top they can make the antagonists. I binge watched the entire series a few months ago for the first time and you can literally feel the immense tone switch, difference in character writing and overall quality decline between S1/2 - 3/4 - 5 - 6/....

I’ve watched all 11 seasons of TWD 5 times since 2019 which is like 1k+ hours i believe. Dale is definitely in the top 10 of my favorite characters from the entire show.

If each of the 177 episodes were approximately 45 minutes long, then that's 7,965 minutes or 133 hrs! And I can't even begin to imagine how many times I've watched the entire show, every episode lol. And of course, that doesn't include FTWD, TWB, Tales of TWD, and webisodes. It's pretty crazy how much time us fans have invested in TWD universe ❤

Dale's death was perfectly timed imo. In season 2 our group went from humans to survivors who'd do what's necessary to survive. For a long time Shane represented this cruel survivor and Dale was the fair and good but vulnerable moral compass. You couldn't know which one would win. Does this broken world change us or can we stay ourselves? By the end of the season Rick had to kill his best friend and other people too. This answered the question. Dale was the moral compass who choose to stay human. His death was the last milestone that finalised where this was going. He had to die or go with the stream and become someone else which we know would've been out of character. His death brought a darker tone as well as helped the story progress.

He was too reasonable for the world the show depicts. He was beginning to become a liability to the group because civilized reactions just won't work in that scenario. So, he had to either die or something would have had to happen to harden him to the reality he was in, or he would have had to leave. Maybe the Terminus experience would have done it. That would do it if anything would.

I don't know if this is true but I think originally that Hershel was going to get Dale's death in S2 before Jeffrey left because of what happened with Frank Darabont. Another what if is what if Dale in the show got his comic death. This was a really good video though and it does fit for this what if story.

You're partly correct about Hershel. It was originally planned that Randall would kill Hershel (while trying to escape.) However, the showrunner (Mazzara) thought that it was a gratuitous death, that wasn't needed at that point. He never did confirm whether Dale's death saved Hershel.

I think Hershel wouldve died on the farm. But I think Tyreese would die in his place (like Tyreese dies in the comics) but Dale i think Dale would die in Tyreese's place i think he wouldve adopted Lizzie and Mika alongside Carol. After he is bitten As he gives up. Not wanting to live in a world like this. He sees Andrea alongside everyone else important to him (Maybe his wife Irma ideally for me) and then as he tells Bob to turn off the radio he dies. But I like this outcome too

What really gets me about Dale’s death, is everyone stands around him crying as they watch him lay there on the ground all torn up. Then you look at Shane, someone that Dale really fought with time and time again. Shane alluded to threatening to kill Dale to his face, yet even he really seemed bothered by his circumstances, pacing back and forth rubbing his head like he often did when something was bothering him.

I think Dale would've hardened by the beginning of S4. You forget that even Hershel, someone who was very staunch in his beliefs in S2 was a different person in S3 and 4 and in a good way. Dale wasn't around for when they had to tough it out on the road like Hershel did between S2 and 3, nor did he live long enough in the story where the living became the real villains, I think at best he only lives as long as Hershel and at worst he dies in the surprise attack alongside Axel. I don't see Dales S2 mindset sticking around when the stuff with Thomas happens in the Prison if not earlier between Seasons, he'd have to grow in order to survive into S4, even Hershel puts more faith in Ricks leadership and choices to kill and the biggest problem after that is the Illness that spreads cause without Hershel you could argue a lot more people would've died without him and his herbal remedy

Dales death made no sense. So, yes it is dark... But he spots the cow easily enough. So, our zombie annoyed and irritated by Karl, rambles about and somehow takes down a cow. Then once devouring the cow, he stops eating and goes and hides in wait, to ambush... Dale, doesn't see the zombie hiding on approach, how did he not hear it, see it, smell it? Anyway, the zombie is in stealth mode which happens a lot in TWD. So Dale walks past the 'stealth invisible zombie' and gawks at the cow. Then the magical zombie appears behind him and wrestles him to the ground. Once on the ground, this zombie that could not keep hold of a child's foot - now has Hulk Fingers and can not only rip open a cow's stomach but can rip open a human's gut? The Walking Dead got so bad so quickly.
