In this one we're looking at the Film Look Creator effect in DaVinci Resolve 19. This new feature has the potential to save you hours from the process of trying to give your footage the film look and I think it is absolutely insanely impressive.

The highlight tool in the film look creator panel does not increase or decrease highlights: it compresses highlights to mimic a filmic response.

Yes, I'm aware, though I should have explained that better. Thanks for dropping a comment about it.

This is a great tool, I'm using this a lot now, but I'm using it on the edit page, for those videos that I don't want to spend to much time, grading.

Yeah, I forgot to show you can use it on the edit page too. That is definitely a really cool bonus to it. Just a great new feature all around 🙂

this is SICK! its going to convince many people to buy the studio version, myself included haha. are you able to save/make your own presets in the Film look creator? love all the examples you did. it was super helpful to see.

It really is a great effect. Can definitely be one more thing people consider when thinking about upgrading to Studio. As far as I've seen you're not able to save your own presets as of right now, however you could work around that by applying the effect to an adjustment clip, dialing in the look, and then dragging that adjustment clip into your Power Bins. Then, next time you wanna use that specific look, you can just bring that same adjustment clip back out and onto the timeline. Or you can use Power Grades to save the look in the color page. Glad you liked the examples, happy to hear they helped 🙂

This video helped me A LOT!! Thank you. As I student, I sometimes have trouble deciding the 'ideal' film look for my footage. Hope you make video about setting the 'target' film look of each example(footage) next time!
@georgekamenov_
@georgekamenov_ 3 ай бұрын
To be honest, I didn't really have specific targets for what I wanted anything to look like in this one. Just kind of messed with settings until I got the clips looking a way I liked 😅

@@georgekamenov_ Understood! And one more thing. It seems this effect has CST function with the "color space override" tab. As the Film look creator is after the Fantom lut, maybe yours is set to rec709 -> rec709. Which one do you think is better? 1) Lut(slog3->rec709) -> Film look Creator(rec709->rec709) 2) Film look Creator(slog3->rec709)

I like using a separate LUT to transform footage. I'm used to using PhantomLUTs for that and I like the look they give me. But using the built in color space override is absolutely also an option. It'll just give you slightly different starting colors and gamma curve but you can get it to the same point look wise fairly easily.

Great video, thanks. May I ask why you are not using DaVinci Color Managed with a DaVinci Wide Gamut time line?

Do you use „film look“ also on your commercial work or just personal? I try to figure out what in particular you mean. Because I guess that this Fimlook creator can not replace a basic grade with a substantial nose tree from the ground up.
@georgekamenov_
@georgekamenov_ 3 ай бұрын
As of right now I've only used it to test out what it can do. It was literally introduced into Resolve a few days ago so I haven't had the opportunity to use it on any actual projects. It definitely can't replace a proper node tree, but it can definitely save a lot of time from the process of getting the "film look". Of course, ideally you would want to combine this effect with a proper node tree with other adjustments to get an even better looking image. But I just wanted to showcase that you're able to get a nice result even with very little effort while using this effect. It's definitely not a universal solution for every project though.

@@georgekamenov_ Good idea. I would set it as the last node in the same way I am grading under a certain LUT which I also set in the last node and all adjustments I do in the nodes before.
@georgekamenov_
@georgekamenov_ 3 ай бұрын
@@Jaxplode Like I mentioned in the video, in a more normal workflow I'd probably do the same. Just thought it was cool that you can technically do all of the adjustments in that same node and still get a usable result :)

Silly question but I have the studio version of resolve already, so where do I get this film look creator from?
@georgekamenov_
@georgekamenov_ 2 ай бұрын
It's only available in the Resolve 19 beta version of Resolve Studio. You can download that from the support page on Blackmagic Designs website. If you're on Resolve 18 it won't be there.
