He'd thrown it up in the air and caught it, before throwing it away. After the bagpipe solo, there is footage of the drummer and in the distance you catch John throwing the stand in the air. Then it shows him catching it. 99% of reactors miss it!

Yep. I'd say most of us who don't know it's coming miss it the first time, cos we're watching the drummer in the foreground of the shot. I blame the video editors -- they cut away from a lot of his iconic tricks in just about every song from this concert. You just see the recovery or a glimpse in the distance. I imagine he did one of his baton twirls just before the first chorus, but we only see he crowd then him holding the stand aloft.

This tour with the MSO was spectacular, as John's usual band and back-up singers were also on stage. His band members were all superb musicians in their own right and continued to tour with John over the decades. At one stage he even had Tommy Emmanuel, who is arguably the world's best acoustic guitarist, touring with him. It says a lot about John's personality that musicians of this calibre are willing to make themselves available to tour with John whenever he had a new tour planned.

Thankyou , enjoyed your reaction, John was born in London, emigrated with his English family when he was 10, - and yes, adopted and loved by us Aussies, glad you saw the Mic stand throw and kick up, BUT YOU MISSED the toss and catch before it, lol, - bagpipes - back to John - he fiddles with the mic stand (never look away when he starts to fiddle with the mic stand) he looks over his right shoulder- stage clear - drum - Mic stand goes twirling skywards - catches on its way back down and throws across the stage, - John has been doing Mic theatrics for many years - In the years when he doing the 'club circuit' he did mic tricks to try and get peoples attention away from the pokies, lol, thankyou again for reacting to this great song, and you have only scratched the surface, plenty more to do. by the way, there is another clip of this song that goes a bit longer - long enough for a young lass to jump up on stage and give him a kiss, - I would love you do a song, any song from the 'Whispering Jack' concert, many of the same songs as the MSO Classic Jack tour, but Whispering Jack was John really showing us that 'Jack is back' - his first solo tour after a long drought, - here is one you may like - When the war is Over kzbin.info/www/bejne/ope6o4uZasqBbsk - or if you would to see John do his 'comedy act' you may like this one - Comic Conversations kzbin.info/www/bejne/gni2h2CraZ51ntU

John sold this venue out more than 90 times in his career and that is just one Capital City in one State. John wanted Bagpipes in this song, they had to change the key to do it and it sounded better. His range is huge. John came from England at the same age as my husband. They were 10 years old. The AO after his name was when he was awarded Australian of the Year. Like my husband he always thought he was Australian and then he found out he was getting that award. He had 4 weeks to become a Citizen and there is a video on here of him getting that award. You need to remember that Scotland is in the UK and we still belong to the Crown. Bagpipes are not unusual here. Listen to John singing Black Dog by Ledd Zeppelin. It is an audio and John always changes a cover but not this one. He never intended to record it, he only used it as his sound check song and he didn’t record until a long time later. It is worth hearing and he does it better than Robert Plant. He was named best voice alive anywhere by Richard Marx and he is in every genre I have heard.

You caught his second mic stand throw across stage and the slick pick up......but even though you were watching, you missed the earlier, much bigger stand throw and catch , while singing. Before the stand throw, you see him tightening the stand, the cue he is about to throw it. The back camera picks him up and he throws the stand straight up and HIGH. The camera changes to the front camera as he catches the stand, and then throws it across the stage. lol

@@carolynh8866I was born in Germany, came over with my hubby and children in 83. Vegemite was soon in our kitchen cupboard on advice of my good friend and then neighbour as she thought it was good for many ailments. Many visitors from back home were made to try it at look least once. My Mother in law thought it was very dark honey and piled it on her buttered toast, very much to the delight if my children, who could hardly contain themselves. She bit into it, hesitated for a second or two, then announced in true German style: one can eat it. I have it every morning on buttered rye or sourdough bread with a slice of cheese, love it.

Yes John is an iconic figure in Australia. Yes there is a statue of him. Yes there are venues named for him. He has been voted as Australia's greatest vocalist of all time by not just his fans, but also his peers within the industry. Hie is hugely respected. This stadium was the biggest venue in Australia at the time. And even though it was a huge venue, they would still have to add additional concerts to meet the demand for tickets sales. In fact John held the record for many years for concert ticket sales, even outselling the likes of Michael Jackson when they toured australia at the same time one year. The record was eventually broken by PINK in the 2010's This concert with the MSO was unique with the number of musicians on stage. Johns usual line up in his travelling band included drummer, base guitar, 1 lead guitar 1 or 2 other electric guitars 1 or 2 accoustic guitars including his own occasionally, 1 pianist who also played other keyed instruments, and a sax / harmonica player and occasionally some other brass instruments. Plus 3 backup singers ... Check out something from some of his other concerts to see his regular line up. The members of Farnham Band are as well known and as popular as John is himself. One of my favourites is Playing to Win from the chain Reaction concert 1991

John released this song when he was 38. It was the first time he was allowed to sing his music his way. He started at 17 with number one hits but no one would record him with this album and no radio station would play his music until we heard it and demanded it. You have to see his Bio Pic Finding The Voice to understand why. His manager and best friend, Glenn Wheatley mortgaged his home and everything he owned to get this out here. America would not listen either. They missed out.

I think 1979 and there is a venue in Melbourne that hold 7000 people, the bag pipes called the clans to war, appropriate for this song you think. John emigrated to Australia as a child (as did Olivia Newton-John), their careers mirrored each other until O. Left for America. John looks left before throwing the mike stand, he is in control. I was sure John wore that shirt in the 1979 concert. Arent you glad he didnt finish that plumbing apprenticeship.Anericans were very insular before www. John does not need any musical backing at all. There is video of him singing only by himself and he is still the charismatic showman with a wonderful voice.. He learnt to do microphone and stand tricks as a means of gaining attention in the pub circuit in his formative musical career. 'You're The Voice' is an anthem and was a hit world-wide. It was written by writers in the UK about nuclear disarmament but it can be applied to any empowerment for good. John sings a number of songs with messages of the greater good for the world. It is interesting that he sang this song at a huge outdoor concert in Germany not long before the Berlin Wall came down !

Okay, a couple of steps down the John Farnham rabbit hole, miles and miles and miles to go. John is like family to every Australian and we are very protective of him so any negative feedback will always generate an angry response. He's not just a good entertainer to us he's the best of the best the GOAT. Many famous artists are in awe of his incredible voice, from every genre. Look for Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham and Diesel singing When Something Is Wrong With My Baby to review next. Most will tell you to only look for live performances and that's mostly right, except for this one, in my opinion, the atmospheric night club vibe is perfect.

Oh dear, us Aussies can be big bullies - I'm sorry you got yelled at for blinking and missing a detail. You'll probably get picked on for not noticing that just before he tossed the mic stand aside, he had thrown it up in the air and caught it. The resolution is so poor that it's hard to pick unless you're expecting it. Your comparison with Freddie Mercury is more significant than you think: when Freddie died, the first person Queen approached to take his place was, in fact, John Farnham. John declined - having worked in the US and travelled extensively with the Little River Band, he'd decided that he just wanted to live and work in Oz with his family, to whom he's devoted. He remains close friends with Brian May from Queen, and Brian is quick to come down here and support John in one of his many fundraising concerts. In fact that is the best thing about John - he's a bloody good human being, humble, kind and caring. John is known for using his considerable clout to put together incredible concerts to raise money for whichever natural disaster is plaguing our country, be it drought, flood or fire.

Australian of the Year is a very prestigious award and is bestowed based on what a person has done to benefit other people or organisations over the years. John was awarded this honour for his contribution to the music industry in Australia and also for the many concerts he organised to benefit such as drought relief, bush fire relief, Rwanda genocide relief. John was always the first to jump in whenever the need was there.

This song was actually written by a British man, who had planned to attend an event to stop nuclear proliferation in the UK. He slept in... and when he realised he wrote this song. It was then given to John Farnham to record. At this time in history... it was important. It's now even more important when for example the US government is trying to strip voters rights etc. WE ARE THE VOICE... we outnumber the government officials and we need to take our stand and let them know, we won't stand around and accept their political bullshit that keeps them and the rich safe, but uses us citizens and the poor as fodder in a war.
