For a soprano to get that kind of a rich tone, like a tenor? Yeah, definitely costs much more than a toy, which is what the other one is.

It doesn’t matter how much it is, give a $1000 ukulele to a beginner player and it will sound like a $20 ukulele, give a professional player a $20 ukulele and it will sound a $1000 ukulele.

+Zach AnthonyK - it's an addiction! ...called UAS - Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome. I'm a pretty bad case, though I mostly aim at low-price bargains that sound/work OK and then doctor them up to play well. In a few days work a $20 Mahalo won't sound just like a Kiwaya, but it'll sound much better and the neck/frets/action can be -almost- as good if one takes care.

Literally the only reason why they sound different is because the Mahalo uke is plastic with nylon strings, and the Kiwaya is wood with probably aquila strings. You can get a cheap uke that's wood and aquila strings that will sound just as good as the Kiwaya.
@BattytattyAj

Actually, a solid wood uke does sound significantly better then a plywood (so called laminate) uke. I can see paying up to a few hundred for a decent, well made, solid wood, properly set up, soprano uke -- but that price is ridiculous. The fret board and bridge is rosewood (not ebony which would be better). I'm not too impressed. On the company's web site they have George playing a KMS-K which goes for a ridiculous $1750.00.takumiukulele.com/product/kms-k/
@foxo4992

Clear difference - with the cheaper one, the sound has a muffledness to it, whereas the expensive one has real depth and richness. However, you make both instruments sing with your amazing playing.

Josh YouAre I agree, its definitely much easier to play and feels amazing and it was a little bit more difficult to play the tune on the yellow one. I just wanted to prove the $20 can do the job for beginners as I learned loads of skills on it for months before 'graduating' to the kiwaya. To me its definitely worth the money especially in terms of tuning stability, intonation and tone. Thanks for the compliments! G

George Elmes Have you heard about the "cuatro", our pride instrument in Venezuela? I would like you to see it! Look for Cheo Hurtado or Jorge Polanco Vids! It's a bigger version of your Uke, played all over the country in many differents kinds of folk music. You will love it! Great vid btw.

George Elmes I bought the exact same ukulele for my 5-yr old daughter for christmas (in purple and black with glitter :)) I love it, she loves it, it does the job. But now I'm tempted to buy a 100$ concert uke for me.... is it how the escalation to a 1000$ uke starts? Now I'm scared lol.

George Elmes My mum got a Mahalo uke (I think everyone's first uke is a Mahalo) and I spent much of my last visit learning the Formby chords, playing inappropriate flamenco licks and doing blues bends. I mean . . . if there'd been a guitar there the uke wouldn't have got much action. But now I want a uke. God dammit. I want to get a uke and create a piece for uke and orchestra and have the world revile me. Great playing btw.

I am sure those poor Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii didn't have thousands of dollars to drop on their musical instruments, but here we are arguing about it. Money doesn't make better music, hard work and talent do. Passion for music or passion for having an instrument you can brag about the cost of?

+eldragon00 Yeah well, Im amazed that the 20 dollar one is playable. If I were to play the Ukulele I would probably spend 100 dollars or something on my first Ukulele just to "be safe", but the 20 dollar one seems fine to begin with. but let me get things straight, you said in your comment that a "3 digit DIFFERENCE would be reasonable? 20 dollars = 2 digits 20000 = 5 digits (3 digit difference) Haha well no worries man, I know what you mean, just replace the word difference with "price", right? I hope that is what you mean because I'd not spend a 5 digit number on any Ukulele.

The $1K uke sounds several orders of magnitude better, but a $20 uke will suffice to learn on and jam out on the beach. That being said, if a student is interested in seriously learning to play any instrument, the best advice I can give is to buy the best instrument you can afford. Your ear will develop better, learning will be easier due to the action, and over the life of the instrument you will hear it grow more beautifully sounding as the wood ages and adjusts to your playing style. It will also hold its value longer and even possibly increase in value. Plus, there’s nothing quite like holding a well-crafted instrument made of wood that feels so good in your hands. That being said, consider the maturity of the student and their ability to care for it. Also, make sure to get it adjusted and setup professionally after you buy it and study up on instructions for caring for the instrument as well as any special instructions for the climate it will be most often exposed to daily.

+ConWolf Sorry to disagree, though a better instrument does not make you a better player it does help. Cheap instruments tend to be harder to keep in tune, finishing of frets is not good, sound is less than motivational. This comparison of a 20 to 1000 is a bit funny but the difference is very audible. Any guitar player would agree with me to buy a reasonable priced guitar, and not some
@W0lfw00d178
@W0lfw00d178 9 жыл бұрын
+ConWolf I disagree though, in this case it can be good. I also have a mahalo and a luna. So i see where you are coming from. But your skill is based on how well you can read and play chords/tabs. But Playing on a cheap instrument can set a standard for bad habits, and hearing chords on a cheap instrument can be distorted from a expensive well built instrument, So when you actually go to play on a much better instrument it can throw you off because your not used to playing a instrument that has better sound quality. It happened to me when i first learned to play guitar. I suggest if anything picking up a cheap guitar/uke play for 3 months and if you really love it, and develop a passion, pay the extra for a much better quality instrument with a much more trusted name.

This is the same for guitars (and probably all instruments). If a person can play the instrument really well, like you did, he/she can get the most amazing tune/sound from a 20$ instrument and make it sound like a freaking 1000$ one when played by someone not so skilled =P I got that a lot when I used to have guitar classes. I would bring my Ibanez guitar (about 1200$) and talk about how it sounded nice and everything, while my teacher made a freaking Michael (about 50$) one sound better than mine on a begginer's amp by Giannini (about 30$). Obviously, my Ibanez had better quality, but since I was new to playing it I couldn't make use of all of it. >

+Andre Paes It's equivalent to a master artist drawing masterworks with a pen on paper, compared to a novice using the most exquisite art supplies and painting crap. I get that. HOWEVER, I've played guitar for well over 10 years now and trust me on this... as far as f.e. acoustic guitars go, the difference between a 100 dollar-ish and a 1000 dollar-ish guitar is ginormous. Just thinking about a Furch in the upper price range gives me goose bumps.

I bought mine for $45 from aliexpress and I have to say I was very surprised by how good it is. It feels and sounds better than some ukuleles that I tried in a music store in my city that were twice or three times more expensive. Plus the one from ali came with a lot of equipment like a gig bag, a capo, tuner, a set of new strings and more.

My music store sells mahalo ukes for 20 dollars but then a big price gap to 80+ dollars for all other ukes (im not willing to spend that much for an instrument i have no experience in), one of the workers there said that there is supposed to be like middle ground (30-40$) that sounds and just as good as the 80+ dollar group. Sadly those ukes are sold out, probably meant that it sold well, the worker said that it will restock in a few more weeks so thats cool def gonna check it out

+lihkan Yes but you've heard a single song played through, which is probably, a camera mic. The quality in instruments isn't just for the audience but for the musicians themselves, like he said the action is better and it generally felt better to play not to mention the large sound quality difference, and it really is pretty big. I don't get how people are so amazed he spent that much, or even that Ukuleles can cost that much. In the world of musical equipment $1000 or even £1000 (I'm English) really isn't that much

I'm glad you still gave praise to the Mahalo uke. When doing comparisons, people often go on quality alone and just diss the lower product. But really, for $20, you're getting an amazing product. I'm hoping to get my first uke for Christmas ($70 when bundled with a case, tuner, dvd, etc.). And even that's pricy since I've never strummed a uke before. But I used to play the cello and recently got back into it. It was just way too complicated and proper for what I want. So I think a uke will fit me great. Any beginner or intermediate player should be satisfied with a $20-$50 uke.

Nice playing, but in my experience its not just a case of whether it stays in tune -also whether the neck is fitted in the right place, whether the bridge is correctly placed - thats the trouble I find with the $20 ukes - not so much that i don't like the tone - that some are built so badly they will never intonate correctly

All true however for beginners I reckon the tuning stability would be the biggest issue as it would be the most noticeable flaw for beginners playing a tune - which is of course caused by the issues you mentioned. I've heard folks upgrade parts on these ukes and they out pretty good. My message was really to prove that these ukes are playable or at least sufficient to get the chords under your fingers before you move up to a better uke. Nice blog btw :)
@bnolsen
@bnolsen 10 жыл бұрын
George Elmes Tuning stability is fixed by decent strings or fixing an obviously broken tuner. The problem with cheap ukes is there's a good chance it won't ever be in tune except when playing only open strings. Now I've had an electric bass that had to have the truss rod readjusted every time we had a 30+C temp swing (pretty common around here). But in my experience ukuleles don't do that.
@GeorgeUke
@GeorgeUke 10 жыл бұрын
Brian Olsen Good strings help but if you tune it correctly with a working tuner it will still drift out of tune because of its lack of stability caused by the issues mentioned by Got a ukulele/barry maz. For £20 though I still think they're awesome.

The $20.00 one seemed a little muffled to me, and still had a good tone. The more expensive one seemed to carry sound farther and a little clearer, but I don't know that it was worth $1,000. I'd like to learn this instrument. This video was helpful in finding/choosing an instrument to begin with, and what to look for when purchasing my next one. I think they both sound good. There is a very slight difference in the tone, but I didn't hear what I would think $980 difference. Change the strings on the yellow uke and put a set like u have on the $1000 uke. There's several things that can help make the sound better. Does the $1000 uke have an electric hookup ? I have a uke made from bamboo... I absolutely love it.. Great sound and under $200. It's all about what you want and what makes you happy!! Bottom line !

+subg88 You seem to be missing the point; the difference between a $20 ukulele and a $200 ukulele is significantly more of a difference than the difference between a $200 and a $1000 ukulele. For most musicians, to spend that amount of money on a ukulele is silly when equal quality ukuleles are readily available for a lower price. (Also, I have gone onstage with my own $20 uke, and it sounded great.)

+Stusvlog As a musician, every ounce you can squeeze out of it is worth as much as you feel like squeezing out of your wallet. Active vs passive, EMG vs Seymour Duncan, Nazgul vs Pegasus, Fender American vs Japan vs Mexico vs Custom Shop. Not many people can tell a difference once you're past one or even two grand, but some can or just want things their way regardless. In the end, what is "worth it" anyway? I've seen dudes build $200 models where the fantasy thing is accurate to standards that aren't even real, just how they imagine it. They finish the model, put it on a shelf, and walk by it for a few years until they get tired of looking at it and throw it away. But they had fun and worked their vision to life.
