Literally the only reason why they sound different is because the Mahalo uke is plastic with nylon strings, and the Kiwaya is wood with probably aquila strings. You can get a cheap uke that's wood and aquila strings that will sound just as good as the Kiwaya.
@BattytattyAj6 жыл бұрын
My Mahalo is wooden I've never seen the plastic ones, but honestly I'd never spend $1000 for a ukulele if it's just nicer strings and *maybe* higher quality wood

Actually, a solid wood uke does sound significantly better then a plywood (so called laminate) uke. I can see paying up to a few hundred for a decent, well made, solid wood, properly set up, soprano uke -- but that price is ridiculous. The fret board and bridge is rosewood (not ebony which would be better). I'm not too impressed. On the company's web site they have George playing a KMS-K which goes for a ridiculous $1750.00.takumiukulele.com/product/kms-k/
@foxo49923 жыл бұрын

@bermradgaming29929 жыл бұрын
+eldragon00 Yeah well, Im amazed that the 20 dollar one is playable. If I were to play the Ukulele I would probably spend 100 dollars or something on my first Ukulele just to "be safe", but the 20 dollar one seems fine to begin with. but let me get things straight, you said in your comment that a "3 digit DIFFERENCE would be reasonable? 20 dollars = 2 digits 20000 = 5 digits (3 digit difference) Haha well no worries man, I know what you mean, just replace the word difference with "price", right? I hope that is what you mean because I'd not spend a 5 digit number on any Ukulele.

The $1K uke sounds several orders of magnitude better, but a $20 uke will suffice to learn on and jam out on the beach. That being said, if a student is interested in seriously learning to play any instrument, the best advice I can give is to buy the best instrument you can afford. Your ear will develop better, learning will be easier due to the action, and over the life of the instrument you will hear it grow more beautifully sounding as the wood ages and adjusts to your playing style. It will also hold its value longer and even possibly increase in value. Plus, there’s nothing quite like holding a well-crafted instrument made of wood that feels so good in your hands. That being said, consider the maturity of the student and their ability to care for it. Also, make sure to get it adjusted and setup professionally after you buy it and study up on instructions for caring for the instrument as well as any special instructions for the climate it will be most often exposed to daily.

Obviously, when you start out, the price of an instrument doesn't matter. Building up skill is much more important and a functioning $20 Ukelele is enough for that. A better instrument doesn't make you a better player.

+ConWolf Sorry to disagree, though a better instrument does not make you a better player it does help. Cheap instruments tend to be harder to keep in tune, finishing of frets is not good, sound is less than motivational. This comparison of a 20 to 1000 is a bit funny but the difference is very audible. Any guitar player would agree with me to buy a reasonable priced guitar, and not some
@W0lfw00d1789 жыл бұрын
+ConWolf I disagree though, in this case it can be good. I also have a mahalo and a luna. So i see where you are coming from. But your skill is based on how well you can read and play chords/tabs. But Playing on a cheap instrument can set a standard for bad habits, and hearing chords on a cheap instrument can be distorted from a expensive well built instrument, So when you actually go to play on a much better instrument it can throw you off because your not used to playing a instrument that has better sound quality. It happened to me when i first learned to play guitar. I suggest if anything picking up a cheap guitar/uke play for 3 months and if you really love it, and develop a passion, pay the extra for a much better quality instrument with a much more trusted name.

david lopez-palmerin, must be a bit tone deaf to not hear the difference. the $1000 Uke sounds way better than the cheap one. the tone is richer, the strings sound off more clearly and the tuning is significantly better. which would have to do with the material it's made form the strings make some difference and the fret board makes a difference in how easily the notes sound out. if you took a beginner player the difference.

This is the same for guitars (and probably all instruments). If a person can play the instrument really well, like you did, he/she can get the most amazing tune/sound from a 20$ instrument and make it sound like a freaking 1000$ one when played by someone not so skilled =P I got that a lot when I used to have guitar classes. I would bring my Ibanez guitar (about 1200$) and talk about how it sounded nice and everything, while my teacher made a freaking Michael (about 50$) one sound better than mine on a begginer's amp by Giannini (about 30$). Obviously, my Ibanez had better quality, but since I was new to playing it I couldn't make use of all of it. >

I'm hoping to get my first uke for Christmas ($70 when bundled with a case, tuner, dvd, etc.). And even that's pricy since I've never strummed a uke before. But I used to play the cello and recently got back into it. It was just way too complicated and proper for what I want. So I think a uke will fit me great. Any beginner or intermediate player should be satisfied with a $20-$50 uke.

Nice playing, but in my experience its not just a case of whether it stays in tune -also whether the neck is fitted in the right place, whether the bridge is correctly placed - thats the trouble I find with the $20 ukes - not so much that i don't like the tone - that some are built so badly they will never intonate correctly

All true however for beginners I reckon the tuning stability would be the biggest issue as it would be the most noticeable flaw for beginners playing a tune - which is of course caused by the issues you mentioned. I've heard folks upgrade parts on these ukes and they out pretty good. My message was really to prove that these ukes are playable or at least sufficient to get the chords under your fingers before you move up to a better uke. Nice blog btw :)
@bnolsen10 жыл бұрын
George Elmes Tuning stability is fixed by decent strings or fixing an obviously broken tuner. The problem with cheap ukes is there's a good chance it won't ever be in tune except when playing only open strings. Now I've had an electric bass that had to have the truss rod readjusted every time we had a 30+C temp swing (pretty common around here). But in my experience ukuleles don't do that.
@GeorgeUke10 жыл бұрын
Brian Olsen Good strings help but if you tune it correctly with a working tuner it will still drift out of tune because of its lack of stability caused by the issues mentioned by Got a ukulele/barry maz. For £20 though I still think they're awesome.

Danellboy Maybe not for you because you're broke and can't afford a $900 ukulele. They make it because there is demand for it. It's impeccable craftsmanship + high quality material. If you can't comprehend that with your brain, you have issues.

The question is, is it $980 better? (imho as a musician I'd say no, i have guitars with better craftsmanship that cost less. but again, only my opinion and personal experience.)

+Stusvlog Stusvlog if you are not an Ukelele player you can't say the difference! It's like a drummer telling me what's the difference between an American Fender Stratocaster and a Japan Fender Stratocaster...You see what I mean ? :)

+VPP's ™ Official Channel © I am an ukulele player though ;P Been playing at least 5 years now. Also, your analogy is a bit flawed- 1: The Japanese Strats aren't _50x_ less expensive than the American Strats, and 2: Guitars are stringed instruments, drums are not; a more accurate analogy would have been a been a bass player critiquing guitars instead ;)

Didn't know you are ukelele player. :) Was just trying to make a point giving expanded examples . :) I think you get what I mean!

+subg88 You seem to be missing the point; the difference between a $20 ukulele and a $200 ukulele is significantly more of a difference than the difference between a $200 and a $1000 ukulele. For most musicians, to spend that amount of money on a ukulele is silly when equal quality ukuleles are readily available for a lower price. (Also, I have gone onstage with my own $20 uke, and it sounded great.)

+Stusvlog As a musician, every ounce you can squeeze out of it is worth as much as you feel like squeezing out of your wallet. Active vs passive, EMG vs Seymour Duncan, Nazgul vs Pegasus, Fender American vs Japan vs Mexico vs Custom Shop. Not many people can tell a difference once you're past one or even two grand, but some can or just want things their way regardless. In the end, what is "worth it" anyway? I've seen dudes build $200 models where the fantasy thing is accurate to standards that aren't even real, just how they imagine it. They finish the model, put it on a shelf, and walk by it for a few years until they get tired of looking at it and throw it away. But they had fun and worked their vision to life.

For some reason I like the sound of the yellow one more than the wooden one for some reason. Probably because that’s what I’m more used to
