Three Tricks for Ukulele Showboating (impress family and friends!) ;-)

I decided to revive a few ukulele showboating techniques/tricks (called exhibition strokes) from Roy Smeck's ukulele method book from 1928. This video shows how to do a Roy Smeck "Figure 8" ukulele stroke and another albeit modified zigzag stroke. Here are the zigzag stroke chords:
Bb 3211 F 2010 A7 0100 Dm 2210
I then go into other unrelated techniques: a pseudo guitar whammy bar vibrato effect, and how to flip the bird (your uke) during a song. hehe It ends with some Strauss on the uke arranged by Petey using the aforementioned techniques and called "Thus Uked Zarathrustra." I hope this gives you some musical inspiration on the uke!
Zarathrusta TABs: peterforrest.ca/sheet-music-u...
You might catch that I start with the circle stroke (around the clock) but I don't explain it. Just use your nail of the index finger on the way down and the pad of the index finger on the way up.
Ukuleles: new Martin 2k concert, new Martin 2k tenor, Martin 3 cherry

Thanks Sarah. I've had an internet minor personality presence since 1995 with my Edgar Allan Poe fan site so I know how to take the criticism and off-the-wall comments. The Snape stuff started in the early 1990s Harry Potter days BUT that was my hair style before Harry Potter so I just accepted it. I'm ok with it all. JW Rowling just usurped the classical pianist Franz Liszt's look. I did classical piano as well so I am living with it among the waves.

Dear Peter Forrest, Thank you so much for the finger 8 trick. I have practiced this for months now and I have gotten to the point where I can play it twice as fast as you taught it. Thank you for this trick. It has been hilarious to see the reactions of people who say they've played for years and I pick up my uke, play this, and tell them I've only played for 6 months.

Petey, I have an essential question, and I hope you can help me with that. You start your “figure 8” with an upstroke, which turns upside down everything I’ve known about strumming, alternate picking, cross-picking, etc. Before you answer, I would like to venture a guess: is it because a uke is NOT a guitar, and, seeing that you hold it differently and you’ve got the high G, normal strumming rules do not apply?
@PeteyHoudini
@PeteyHoudini 4 жыл бұрын
Privyet! When I first saw the Roy Smeck example of the figure 8, I couldn't tell which way to start from. It just felt better doing first an up-stroke with the index finger. Mainly, because if you do a downstroke, you hit the nail on the edge of the fret board and the metal frets and that shreds where the base of your index fingernail meets the skin. The pad of index starting upwards causes no pain issues. Not related to guitar at all. hehe

Thank you. The patterns sound good when you change between two chords like Dm and A7. Try to find left hand chord changes that require only lifting a finger or two and then putting them back. You'll be cooking on the uke in no time! 8-)

+Peter Forrest Goodness me, that was a prompt reply, made all the more impressive as it is currently 23.19 hrs all the way over here where I am in Nottingham, England! Thank you for your encouraging words. I happen to be an absolute beginner to the ukulele - I've been strumming away for a mere two weeks and my fingertips still throb after an hour. Anyway, your gentile, quirky and thoughtful personality is most enjoyable to watch and I am steadily working my way through your other tutorials to find techniques appropriate for my level. Thanks again 😀

Best to watch my tutorial on the three ways to strum if you are a beginner. The key is to eventually be able to switch strumming between the thumb, index and thumb+index. I've also been to Nottingham three times. I even wrote a song back in 2010 about it. hehe kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnzXmpufdtGqoZY
