I was introduced to the blues scale by a stranger in a music shop. I was looking at guitars and this guy played some chords and he told me what to do and we were jamming a little blues. This song has long been one of my favourites.

@@KentHewittpiano88 Woodworking today. Building some chairs for some of the grand children. I try to build things that never will go bad..of.course that is sans rain etc. On the musical front. I am trying to master the C F G half whole and whole half diminished scales. Constantly challenging my self is part of this. I pick any note. eg C# I visualize C# E G Bb..being fully aware this is stacked minor thirds. I start on the half whole.scale. C Db D# E Gb G A Bb C. This is the scale. I use to find most of the dominant.altered chords. The.C7 chord.. as you know is hidden in this 1 3 5 b7 C E G Bb.. Add to this I think this is called.the Super locrian scale..Anyways back to my drill. Then I might pick the C# or Db (enharmonic equivalent), and run the.diminished whole half scale..observing this also yields the same result. That is confusing on the written page, but works. Btw..I have not found the reason why this is called the super locrian. OF course this can run into.hours of research..I found.a great research channel. pianoscales.org..

When I was growing up my grandfather played a lot of thelonius and my nan was obsessed with oscar Peterson so in my head the goal is to play with the speed and precision of oscar and the minimal jagged style of thelonious, are there any players you recommend listening to that do both I know the styles are somewhat contradictory to each other. Thanks for your lessons I have learnt a lot from you
@KentHewittpiano888 жыл бұрын
They are so different it's hard to say. Nobody had the precision and chops of OP....I mean Nobody! Monk was so unique and individualistic that trying to imitate him sounds lame. Chick and Jarrett are great for speed and percision...but different. Have you checked out Phineas Newborn or Randy Weston?

Barry Harris. He has Bud Powell technique not as dazzling as Oscar's style, but pretty close. , and he has a good understanding of Monk's methods, yet doesn't copy Monk. His live at Maybeck Hall version of "Ruby My Dear" is outstanding, and he demonstrates a very, very high level of technique. I can also recommend my OWN version of Blue Monk. No Oscar flash, but i think i bring something to it that is unique.kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5TUfKaMnciIfpo

To Kent Hewitt - Sorry to say but to me your piano has some keys a little bit out of tune on the left hand. It came particulary noticeable on Georgia here. I hope I'm wrong because I play violin, not piano.
@KentHewittpiano889 жыл бұрын
+Carlos Holst That low note was out of tune, I realize. That was played on the Yamaha upright I believe. The other piano on my vids is better, but even though we tune twice a year there are apt to be periods of time when the tuning is imperfect. I use acoustic pianos only ...most of the other people use electric set-ups which don't have to be tuned. Sorry if the notes were a distraction.
@carlosholst53809 жыл бұрын
+Kent Hewitt - Man you answer was faster than an oiled lightining. Thanks for the blues lesson, I love to play blues on violin, I feel gooood. To keep your pianos in tune you need constant air conditioning around them. It seems you live in a humid region, Mississipi perhaps, St. Luis...
@KentHewittpiano888 жыл бұрын
We live in CT which is New England but there is dry air in winter and humid air somewhat in summer. We have a device attached to the Mason and Hamlin that we add water to that helps, but we still have to tune it a few times a year. This video was made using the Yamaha upright, however.

"Georgia on my mind" is not blues...
@KentHewittpiano887 жыл бұрын
Obviously...you're totally correct. I tried to show this as a "blues style" ballad. It's a standard, (American Songbook by Hoagy Charmichael) but one that adapts nicely to a "bluesy" interpretation. Hence in the improvisation, the "blues scale" works well. Also this song sounds different sung by Ray Charles, than it would sound sung by Frank Sinatra. I didn't mean to have the title misinterpreted, so I have now just changed the title to "Blues Style Standard"...thank you.
