Hello Dr. Josie! (I'm not sure if you still are assisting with students here on YT, but worth a shot!) This is Spencer. I am a sophomore, transfer applicant. I intend to pursue an Industrial Design Career. In terms of general essays for Georgia Tech, I do have concerns with the connection between my essay and academics. I've had a rough academic record (no fails), but since have stepped up since senior year of high school. My current prompts are along: "Why Us + Major" and "9 Distinct Values + How Past Experiences led/prepare for GT's community?" P.S.: About a year ago, I have met multiple times with GT's dean of my major. We've met both in-person, virtual, and invited me to an event that the department held. Early on, Ive alsways been interested and hoped to attend GT. As mentioned above, my academics have been rough. Most importantly, In my life I rather chose to focus on my passions, ambitions, and skills (design, art, music, family, etc.) I stopped engaging in school-extracurriculars in high school due to my large focus on improving myself and attending outside art classes. I am a bit scatterbrained when it comes to writing/storytelling, but anyways, I am confused on how and where to iterate my academic record and my internal focus on myself (skills, art, etc.). Any advice or subtle hints would be much appreciated (in response to this scatterbrained letter)!

Hi Spencer, Thanks for reaching out. I would say that your HS record is far less important as a transfer applicant than your current college GPA/ courses. How is your current GPA? You mention senior year and those concerns but not this year and last. As a transfer applicant - which you should see my video on transfer essays - you should focus on identity, passions, and academic strengths in your current college environment. How have you worked to make it a better academic / social space for students within/ and/ or beyond the classroom? Also, you want to really do a deep dive into what you will gain and offer GT as a student. They want to see that you will create your belonging ASAP...so networking with the Dean is good and you can mention that but also so research on specifics to how you see yourself living and learning on their campus. The less than stellar grades from HS I would not mention but if you need to discuss anything academic from college that I would carefully consider. If it is isolated then maybe in the additional info section of the Common App, if it is integral to your story and why you want to transfer then maybe in that one essay. Hope this helps. transfer vid - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZ6pd5Rmq8uUfJosi=XoK6cdhsJRfTEpZh

Hi Dr. Josie! I am a highschool student looking to write the personal statement for undergrad admissions. For my personal statement i wanted to write about a sexual harassment experience that changed my perspective and how my intended major helped me in the healing process. Is this too sensitive to be my personal statement? your videos have so much help, than you so much!

Hi Amanda, thanks for watching. I am sorry you went through such an experience. The first thing you want to think about is if this is the story that best shares who you are. Right now I am hearing something that happened to you (which is passive) I would advise that if you start with something like this that the rest of the essay is active (something you started to do, enacted etc) to showcase your values and growth. I would not just say that in your major you would start the healing process. Most of the essay should already be about that, good luck.

heey, can i write about or include some information about cyber theft and its solutions in suplemental essay if i wrote abot cs on my main essay and my major is that?
@WriteYourAcceptance
@WriteYourAcceptance 7 ай бұрын
hi, you can but remember that a lot of CS students will write about AI, data analysis, coding etc. Are you sharing other aspects of who you are - covering intellectual curiosity, cultural background, social awareness and/ or community service? You want to make sure that they are getting new aspects of you. Good luck!

Hi Dr. Josie! Any advice for a transfer applicant applying to Georgia Tech in their Freshman year from a different college after getting rejected in their first application?

Hi yes but what are your prompts for transfer? I haven’t worked on one this cycle so far. Do you have a why do you want to transfer?
@jieyangoh77
@jieyangoh77 2 жыл бұрын
@@WriteYourAcceptance My prompts are "Why do you want to study your chosen major specifically at Georgia Tech" and the second prompt had 4 options and I decided to go with the following. "Describe a challenge, setback, or failure you have faced and overcome. What did you learn from this experience?" I was considering to talk about my rejection from GT as the "setback" but I am not sure if that's a good idea. Should I also elaborate why I want to transfer out of my current institution?
@WriteYourAcceptance
@WriteYourAcceptance 2 жыл бұрын
@@jieyangoh77 so interesting, they are not really asking why you are want to transfer out of your current institution which quite a few of schools do. I would focus on drafting a really strong why us for the first essay. do your research and share a class, a beyond the classroom intellectual activity that you would participate in...maybe start with how you got into your chosen field of interest / like what you have done in the last year at your current school that has deepened your interest in the field you are pursuing. for prompt 2 - I would consider what you want them to know about you. they will already know you were rejected once if they linger on your application details...not sure how you can make the case that you overcame being rejected from the school...feels like external markers versus something you grew from. I would consider another topic that can also share about your cultural background or perspective on community etc. good luck!

Hello Dr. Josie, I found your video incredibly helpful in shaping my approach to my essay. As a transfer student from an out-of-state university with a strong GPA, I'm seeking advice on how to structure my "WHY US + MAJOR" essay. While I have a solid academic background, my extracurricular involvement has been primarily focused on a research job that opened doors to Georgia Tech's impressive research opportunities. My question is whether I should solely emphasize this research experience and its connection to GT, or if it would be beneficial to also mention other interests such as my involvement in a band and various high school club activities. Additionally, when crafting the "9 Distinct Values" essay, would it be more effective to draw on a high school experience or should I focus on something more recent? Thank you for your guidance.
@WriteYourAcceptance
@WriteYourAcceptance 6 ай бұрын
Hi thanks foe watching. I would potentially get creative and start with a short couple lines about the band...maybe connect something of the band - it's shape, it's organized chaos to something in research...that way you creatively share another aspect of you while focusing on the academics and research. for the 9 values essay, I would focus on the more recent activities unless you have something so impressive from HS you should share. Good luck!

@WriteYourAcceptance Thank you for your prompt response. Do you believe it's necessary to delve into technical details such as facts and findings in discussing my research, or can I take a more contextual approach and connect it to my journey at Georgia Tech?
@WriteYourAcceptance
@WriteYourAcceptance 6 ай бұрын
@@saeshukarthika278 I would do a more context driven approach...and if you can sprinkle in findings in lay mans terms then okay but if not I would not get technical.

Do have any advice about essays for UCF Medical School?

Hi do you have a specific essay in mind? Off the top of my head I remember they have a diversity essay and a what other profession would you choose. The latter I would answer directly - what would you do if not be a doctor. If there are any traits or overlaps in strengths may be of interest. Any others that you are thinking through? Are you applying right now?

That you have a chance, absolutely...but test optional and test blind are two different things...if you do take an exam and do well for the stats of that school and they are test optional I would send it...here are some links talking about the topic - nypost.com/dispatch/what-test-optional-really-means-for-college-applications/ www.crimsoneducation.org/us/blog/test-prep/how-will-test-optional-admissions-affect-my-chances-/
