Jesus man I think some days you make honest good stories, this one and the one about love whit drunk old man, are just hard and good and suckerpunch you. You are a writer, that happens is making videos, you make criticism, opinion, stories and videoessay. Content creator or datologist are just "fancy words " for old professions, IMHO.

A heartwarming but also kind of heartbreaking snapshot into love occured when I was in one of those Build-A -Bear places where you put together a teddy bear with little knick knacks. I was there with my then girlfriend, but it was this other couple that really stuck in my mind. About the same age as us, the woman was blind. Her boyfriend was guiding her by the arm and they were building thier bear. She felt the different bits and excitedly asked what they looked like, so she'd probably lost her sight and her boyfriend described each outfit. she wanted a spaceman bear. He picked out each piece and descibed them. She was so happy and he was so pleased he got the thing she imagined. That was love right there.

I became disabled at 19, I now use an electric wheelchair or crutches but I can only go small distances. I found myself giving up on the thought of a partner as I didn’t want to be a burden and I honestly didn’t think anyone would want me. It’s limited my life in a myriad of ways but mostly in connections with people. They find it hard when I have to rearrange without notice or I’m late. So you end up thinning the herd to true friends quite quickly. It always astounds me how differently I am treated when in my chair versus my crutches. People see my chair and immediately talk to my partner or friends. They make assumptions based on what media has portrayed disability to be before I have even approached them. When I am on crutches people assume I hurt myself doing something (skiing etc) as I don’t necessarily ‘look’ ill - even though up to 80% of disabilities are invisible and there is no look to being ill or having a chronic condition. My first three years of uni no one in my classes spoke to me until I used my crutches more in the final year. I’d be interested in your take regarding the depiction of disabilities in media and how that has shaped people’s ‘general’ idea of what that means abs is presented like. I’m completely aware this is an old video bad chances of you seeing this are incredibly slim however I wanted to say your work is entertaining, beautifully dry in humour and incredibly well researched and presented. I have only recently found your channel and have found when I am sore and in pain your content with your acerbic wit and fantastic observational humour and phrasing of these. Brilliant channel. I wish I could provide more support as it feel content like yours is a true diamond in the rough. Thank you so very much and apologise for the novella I seem to have left as a comment. I think this overlooks the #1 biggest advantage of datings sites/apps, which is that it lets people connect exclusively with other single people who are interested in dating. When trying to meet people at bars or parties, there are an awful lot of folks who will engage in conversation, let you buy them a drink, and flirt before they mention they have a significant other 2+ hours into the conversation.

I had a girl approach _me_ on online dating once, then two months into it she took another guy on the side. She waited until the weekend of my birthday to let him start messaging me to stop messing around with "his girlfriend" because she thought maybe I'd be happy enough from having romantic affection on my birthday for the first time in my life that I _woudln't_ be upset to find out she'd been cheating on me for two months, and ultimately chose him over me? Well, at least I learned that she wasn't the one that way, and before blocking them both from messaging me I warned him that if she pulled this kind of trash on me, there was nothing to stop her from doing it to him too.

Nathan Karr , dating doesn't mean exclusivity. If you were together for more than 2 years or had clearly established that you were only dating each otherthrn there's a problem, if not?....eh..... Discovering that on your birthday sucks though, if it was recent I hope you're okay.

The problem is that in today's world, where everyone is working jobs all the time, with little free time to go out and mingle, and where do you even go to mingle nowadays? Bars? Clubs? What if you're not into that scene? Online dating is almost the best way to go nowadays depending on where you live and what your life is like. I met my wife through online dating and so did my friends. We just weren't social club people, church people, bar people, or anything like that, and we each were working multiple jobs, so we had no outlet to meet new people other than co-workers so online dating was the absolute ONLY outlet for us.
@rashadpreston73895 жыл бұрын
Dang, it seems like this is the way I'm going to have to meet people. But I'm really apprehensive about it and I find the whole thing quite annoying. But do you have any tips or advice?
@alexarias57175 жыл бұрын
@@rashadpreston7389 as someone that doesnt really go out that often, i just wanna give advice based on me having met my boyfriend in real life. the key is just to go to as many group things with friends until you meet new people through them and so on. It's the easiest way for me to get friendly with someone new and maybe more. As for the settings for those scenarios that can be the hard part. I'll admit usually drinking can be involved but not over the top. There's been a lot of opportunities i've actually missed throughout my life because I was horribly socially insecure. But i work at it constantly. I tried online and almost had something with a girl but she had to move for other reasons so I guess there's something to online dating

Who are these people who work ALL THE TIME? People have more leisure time now than ever in history, which is why the entertainment industry is so massive, and always in need of more content. Fact is, people have LOTS of time to date. But now that it's 'normal' to date online, anyone who just talks to a stranger comes off as crazy. That's the real issue.
@BlackburnBigdragon3 жыл бұрын
@@ShootMeMovieReviews I was one of those people. I needed to hold down three part time jobs in order to even pay for rent. My mother passed away, and my father and sister had to move into a place that was too small for the three of us. I ended up on my own, and had to spend my college savings on just... getting an apartment, and surviving. None of us had money after that. To this day, I know people who rarely get any free time to themselves because they're always at one of their jobs. You get trapped in this cycle. No one is hiring except for very low pay, part time jobs. You need multiple jobs in order to make enough money to live. And because you don't have any free time, you can't fit school in, because you need to work all the time to pay the bills. I know SO MANY people where this is the story of their lives. It took me YEARS and some luck to break this cycle even a LITTLE bit.

The more you start doing things like that, complete random things like that, the more you'll get used to it. Perhaps you'll never get comfortable with it, but it will get easier, like everything in life gets. Remember the quote: Only the Coward is capable of the greatest measure of heroism / bravery. The fact that I'm a socially awkward dweeb kind of excludes me from the bar scene. Not because I'm too chickenshit to talk to a girl in a bar (which hey, maybe I am), but because bar flies simply aren't my type. I happen to _like_ girls who are socially awkward dweebs like myself and therein lies the problem: If they're anything like me, they're probably spending their Friday/Saturday nights relaxing _at home,_ and if they _are_ being dragged to bars by their friends, they're likely in a closed-off state of "Is it time to go home yet?" and wouldn't be receptive to my interacting with them anyway. So as much as I like the _idea_ of meeting a special someone in person, there's simply a dearth of situations in which I'd encounter them in public. The only thing I can think of is nerdy conventions _a la_ Comic-Con or PAX, but even then I don't think most girls would appreciate being macked on while they're just trying to have fun.
@AWanderingEye3 жыл бұрын
Here is my $0.02 I think here you have to be open to 3rd or 2nd tier connections with potential friends/dates/mates. Ex. Sign up for a community ed class in something you are genuinely interested in. Show up on time ready to join in right away. Be an active participant. Be social in class or at least at break time. Get to know whoever shows up. Let them know you're available for 'age range' 'lifestyle' 'religion', 'height' 'ethnicity' dating partner --- whatever is a dealmaker for you. They either know someone or will know someone who does. Follow up on any and all referrals. Be kind to all people in all the tiers --- anyone could make a vital referral at any stage. Remember who connected you and keep in touch with them, even if the prospective date flops. You will meet people and through them you'll continue to meet more people until eventually you'll have met enough that a few with whom you truly find a connection with are natually arriving at your doorstep. Be yourself and weed out those who are not being themselves. Ditto angry people. Avoid people who dominate (unless that's your dream). Avoid closed off people who cannot try anything new --- meeting people to date is only trying new things over and over if nothing else. Relax and have fun --- that is a very attractive/magnetic feature as well as having a sense of humor and being considerate, etc. And, if you relax and have fun, you're getting something for your trouble. Everyone wants to be around someone who knows how to enjoy the moment. Be that person and even if you never marry you'll never have a dull social life.

The one rebuttal I have to what you said is in relation to being shy, or socially anxious, and messaging people online. I myself have struggled and still do struggle with social anxiety and honestly, messaging people online has helped me out. Like, it has its limits for sure. But there was a time a couple years ago where I was in a place where even sending a message to someone online was really hard for me. And it made me want to throw up in my mouth. Now I feel that way about talking to people in person, but in the past even talking to people in person was just so out of the question really. So, I think there is some usefulness to it.

I don't think I've ever seen a young girl alone in a bar before. They are always with a man or in a group, and there is no way to tell if they are single. Breaking into a group alone is possible, but requires more confidence and skills than most posses. Approaching with a group of your own works, but not much of an option when all your friends are in relationships.

I came to a similar conclusion as george-that online dating is not as effective as meeting people in public. I have a son who lives with me full-time so i wanted to meet a women who also had kids and thought online dating would be a good place to do that. I spent a lot of time message people back and forth and went a on about 6 dates and had a terrible experience overall. I found that i did not get on well with the people the site thought i was "compatible" with. I started walking up to girls in coffee shops and asking them what they were reading. This worked really well. I ended up marrying my soul mate. We been together for 7 years and have absolutely nothing in common

its interesting to look at this subject in pop culture like film / tv , in just a few years we've gone from characters being ridiculed and looked down on for the "lonely hearts ad" or using a dating service. To now having a central character encouraged to use tinder etc as a positive act " get back in the saddle / plenty more fish / you need to meet more people " kinda deal. is it that we now view dating as less about connection and romance and more about finding the right fit for our lifestyle and image ? or is it just a by product of the hyper connected world , computers and tech are no longer just for the nerds so the stigma is void ?

Online dating is strange. I've been doing it on and off for a couple of years now and I've found that you really have to put in quite a bit of effort to get anything out of it. Some of these dating websites are just utter bullsh!t and you can tell that which profiles are fake. You can always tell which dating websites are dodgy usually by the design of the site (they have a slick looking home page and then when you have created your profile the rest of the sites user interface looks like it was designed in 1996), you get 15+ messages/likes straight after creating your profile.... I'm also not a fan of these dating sites that have some sort of "gimmick" like you can't send the women a message, they have to message you first! WTF!! Maybe I should try and speak to women I like in real life :-) Thanks for another great vid George.

In my experience, as a Christian, most mainstream websites are full of people who say they are Christian for social or some other reason but are not. A lot of what people 'say' they are is down to maximising interest from possible mates and perhaps what they'd like to be, rather than who they actually are, so having niche websites for religious followers can be useful for those for whom religion is a non-negotiable and not just a nice-to-have.

I use always search online for partners not because I am shy or I have no time, but because it is more likely to find someone in some niche forum that shares my interests and understands me, than in a bar. People who go out are mostly not my cup of tea, because I am myself not that kind of person. I rather stay home or do other things when going out. So I do not want a partner that is that active, super social and energetic kind of guy. So the best option is the internet. But sometimes I wish it was not weird to talk to a stranger you like on the streets. If it was not considered creepy, I would do that.
@DSan-kl2yc7 жыл бұрын
Hail Goomy bars are not.the norm. You can talk to people anywhere even on the street though that requires bravery and being good at it. And wanting someone with your exact interests limits who you way too much. I actually wouldn't want a girl with my interests. My.interests don't define me and what I want out of life in that sense. As in my entertainment doesn't, and neither does my job.
@Puer_luminis7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they are not the norm. But there are few other options for a person like me who sits on the computer all day. And likes to do things alone or with a person they already know. And shared interestes are kinda important, because people with similar likings are more often on the same wavelenght. And it creats topics to talk about. Often people from the same community and with similar background are more likely to get together.

Different societies have different standards - in my country people are very friendly and chatting to random strangers is quite normal.

Try small talk on the elevator and work up from there. Notice the world and make a comment about it. You at least will be saying what is on others minds and eventually make a connection. It likely will just be an enjoyable moment. But you have to start somewhere.

That moment at the end when you, for a moment, imagine a whole persons life was beautiful and honest. I welled up for you feeling a life for someone else and also for the strength it must take for someone to be so strong to put themselves out into this world that can be so harsh. I hope she found someone to watch movies and be annoyed by cats with. I love your work. Long time watcher first time poster. X

on the flipped of that, there are the horrific, shallow, bitter people who literally write crap like "if you make less that $100,000/yr, don't even bother!" or "if you are under 6'2", walk away" and it kind of makes you hate people. It's sad that it requires a degree of suffering to create a truly beautiful person.

neglesaks I wouldn't put those in the same category. Politics is a very heated subject matter and said people prefer to not invite the idea of constant debate in their lives.

And yet, it can work... The secret is to accept reality, be wise-minded, use the platform for what it is, present yourself honestly, and fast track to in-person dating (or not) as soon as sensible... Even in your profile blurb, you can convey your genuine self... It’s a useful tool, not a silver bullet...

Part TWO?!? Your "Human Centipede" preference presages a life of loneliness my friend, with only the warm, sensuous shapeshifting of the lava lamp to keep you company. Seriously, I laughed out loud when you discussed your favorite movie! One of your most brilliant lines ever!

I found online dating to be utterly depressing. My entire life reduced to bland apologetic single sentences like "I like travelling" ... God fucking forbid if you happen to NOT like fucking travelling! All in an attempt to attract women who still continued to click past in DROVES. Just awful, awful.
@carultch7 жыл бұрын
"I like travelling" usually means "I like travelling when someone else is paying for it"
@Paul077917 жыл бұрын
Ha yes. Actually I take the above back, women can just sign up to these sites and then sit back whilst men do all the clicking. There's no progression here; men still have to do all the chatting up. I once asked a female friend how many hits she got in a week, thousands. Thousands!
@brabbit3307 жыл бұрын
Lantern Jaw Women are more choosy, because they have to think about personal safety and whether the guy looks trustworthy to meet in real life. And they like to think of something nice to say when messaging. Most men don’t bother reading women’s profiles, they just click yes to every single woman they think looks fuckable based on her picture alone. That’s how women end up with thousands of “hey you” messages while men don’t.

Chatting with someone online is also very different from talking in person. You can have great conversations online with someone you seem to have a lot in common with. But when you actually meet you just don't click and get disappointed.

Right around the 1m20s mark, there imagery from a 1970s US game show called The Dating Game. And one of the contestants, I swear that's Andy Kaufman (the comedian, best known for his role Ladka on the TV show Taxi. But also known for his Mighty Mouse routine, and for getting punched out on set in the 80s David Letterman show).

I noticed this as well and if you look at the profile picture on the Wikipedia page for 'Andy Kaufman' it looks like the same person.

We met through shared interests and became romantically engaged through shared attraction. All the surveys and tick boxes in the world can't do anything more than, well, tick an arbitrary box
