It was when the Gepards were retired from the German army that I heard about this weapon system for the first time. My thoughts back then: What a waist! Who needed them? Why were they built in the first place? As a big money maker for the weapons manufacturers? My thoughts now: We Germans were so lucky hat we never had to put those Gepards into action. And I am so glad that they are still available to do their job in Ukraine now. I have learned a lot. Slava Ukraini!

Had the same Idea. But when they got send to Ukraine I began wondering that maybe they would be good against drones. If only the radar was accurate enough. It seems the Radar is perfect for this. And the Gepard has regained a use for murdering drones.

A modern weapon usually takes 8-12 years develop. If you neglect your defense industry it can be tragic as you see in Ukraine. It's too late to catch up. You feel weak, scared and helpless. You let oppressors like Putin keep oppressing. You make up stories about being anti-war and you end up agreeing with the oppressor. Military weakness lead to a sort of "Stockholm Syndrome" and I think that was happening to Germany.
@jajamuc

@@williamzk9083 There‘s a lot of truth to what you say. Let me add another, somewhat personal aspect: I was born 23 years after WW II in former West Germany and my upbringing was shaped by pacifism. In my late teens, I even became a conscientious objector. For me and most people my age it was a given that Germany and military just don‘t go together. On the one hand, we the West Germans feared the Soviets as the biggest threat during the cold war. On the other hand, our country was responsible for millions of Soviets killed in WW II (mostly Ukrainians and Belarusians b.t.w.). This feeling of collective guilt and a responsibility to prevent any future armed conflicts shaped the West German psyche a lot. Now add East Germans to this picture, with a 40 year history of being a „brother nation“ to Russia. This is not an excuse, but some explanation of why it was quite an overcoming for Germans to finally oppose Russian aggression by supplying arms to Ukraine.
@williamzk9083

@@jajamuc Pacifism kind of reassured Germany's neighbors and made sense. Germany was always in the position of being seen as a threat or two pacifistic and was not allowed to become normal by ignorance in some elements of the press. At same time its obvious that Russian espionage was already seeking out double standards in our societies and using them to sow ideologies to advantage the,m. Recently Russian Troll farms (run by Wagner and the GRU) have been promoting anti EU politics. -Finally the Euro zone crisis was created by excess spending and bad investment in Portugal, Italy, Spain and Greece frocing Germany, Holland, France to rescue the Euro at the expense of defense. -Finally when Putin invaded Crimea the nuclear powers under Obama and Cameron did nothing. Obama was a weak in this area and wouldn't have happened under any president

I'm pleased also. German Politicians have neglected German defense and its put all of Europe at risk, feeling weak, vulnerable and scared of standing up to Russia or defending the small Baltic states. -Most of the weapons came purely from German Private Industry such as IRIS/T SM was purely private and the German Military was provided no funds to purchase it. Gepard is a 1970s system which received modernized fire control and radar between 2006-2009 and was then moth balled. Even now the German Government is buying overseas weapons rather than cultivating its own industry. Some of these such as Spike MELS anto tank missile can not be exported because the Israelis don't allow it, just like Switzerland won't provide ammunition. German could have either cooperated with france or developed its own from the excellent technology of the Trigat LR missile.

Funding for ATACMS has been approved by Congress. It's an old missile nearing the end of its life. It is being replaced by the Precision Strike Missile in 2025 so in reality its really got only about 5% of its value. There are perhaps 3500 available so the US could early give 500. It seems ridiculous to hold back on it now that Britain has released the incredibly effective Stormshadow. The Russians will probably be able to intercept it but they won't get all and they will need to redeploy their weapons further back. Their Helicopter bases will be vulnerable, air field, bridges, SAM system etc. They'll compliment Stomshadow and maybe the Naval Strike Missile and Taurus nicely.

We tried to use the older Patriot missile system against them and found the Patriot missiles to be successful in this new mission. They were antiaircraft missiles not anti rocket missiles. We were lucky. I am glad to see that you are also able to use older equipment for a new role that I am sure the Gepard was not designed for. When it was designed and produced there were no drones used in war nor did they think of low flying cruise missiles. Good luck and great job in adapting old equipment for new jobs.

And before we know it, we'll have Ukraine vs. Russia in a similar situation as South-Korea vs. North Korea where one side as better and more modern arms and should on paper be able to defeat the other side, but with the costs of such a victory being so high that it leads to a permanent stalemate.

Does the chassis needs to be that big though? Seems too heavy for mass production. Maybe a single gun and smaller chassis would be better in the future.

Its the chassis of the Leopard 1, it was chosen simply because it was available in large numbers and no extra production line was necessary. Furthermore if the Main Battle Tank, The Gepard and support vehicles of all kinds use the same chassis logistics and repair is much easier. But you are right the replacement is a wheeled much smaller vehicle with just one gun.

On top of taking out cruise missiles, helicopters and drones the Gepard guns would decimate armored vehicles and infantry. Hopefully Ukraine gets a steady ammo supply from the new Rheinmetall factory in Germany.

indeed finally some weapon systems manage to prove more effective than expected. the question is for a front line of 1000km+ does the Uaf or their proxy masters enough quantity of those wonder weapon systems to supply???? because a few units or dozens of such weapon systems would sitting ducks and insufficient to cover defense needs

@@micheledimond The reason that there are still so many retired Leopard 1 tanks in warehouses of various companies is exactly due to this. As a MBT the Leopard 1 is outdated (canon, armor) - but the chassy and engine are a very reliable design.

I hope we can keep them supplied with ammunition. It is a great weapon but it shoots 1100 rounds a minute, last time they only got 6000.
