"anyone", yes Gordon... anyone but Castres Olympique. They let go of him in 2017, for some strange reasons. Imagine head coach Ugo Mola and his staff being given the opportunity to pick the little gem ! For A. Dupont, all it took was a one-and-a-half hour drive from one city to the next, and voilà. And the Castres Olympique decision was taken even though Dupont put an impressive performance with the victory of French Barbarians vs Australia in 2016 ! Some things just can not be understood.

Thanks for taking a look, really pleased you liked it. Ah I could't work out who is was so went with the BBC Sport team sheet which had Ollivon at 8!
@BTBDech3 жыл бұрын
@@GeraintDaviesGDD Regarding the pass body position, it was really interesting. You pointed out one wickness in his pass: that he tends to lift his chest a little too early. Although he's not droping the ball as you said the consequence of this wickness would be, do you think his pass is less quick or precise because of that? Can he improve it, or his habits and current coordination would be to much work to modify? Also, Dupont said he "worships" Aaron Smith's pass technics: do you see any flaws in Smith's technique? Thank you for this great video!
@GeraintDaviesGDD3 жыл бұрын
@@BTBDech Great questions. So the weakness is that his chest lifts as he passes, which also causes his chest and chin to separate. In the example I showed this didn't cause an issue, however, it does make the pass more inconsistent and there are a few examples from the game of his pass dropping down & there were 2 knock ons caused by this. It also impacts the angle of the ball and can make it fly with the front of the ball dipped, which is less powerful. Aaron Smith is outstanding. His biggest weakness IMO is that he can get stiff and over rotate at his hips causing him to drag the ball back & lift the ball meaning catchers have to reach/adjust!

Great analysis both in content, context and technical mastery. Rather like Dupont's seemingly effortless play and form, your analysis appears to be easy and you are doing what no (or few) other analysts are doing. Please keep posting. Can Dupont's game be coached to young players? How can his masterful game reading and option taking be learned?
@GeraintDaviesGDD3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Tim. That's really lovely of you to say. There's a load more on the channel and plenty to come! For me, yes! Every players game is coached and can be coached. A part of coaching is of course harnessing the players abilities and capturing their imagination. That's what I think has happened with Dupont. He's quick, he's powerful, and is massively motivated. So he then is able to review footage, really study the game and learn more about it. He also had the benefit of simply playing the game, not being too constrained and being allowed to do what he wanted on a pitch!
@gillesmatheronpro3 жыл бұрын
Yes Sir, it can. And it's currently happening, as we see (among the younger ones) more and more players considering "support playing" a a genuine skill. For the better. Impacting is OK, but what's next when your opponent or teammate is down after tackle...? This key element got forgotten for way too long, and lesser-inspired coaches over-favored the "combat" side of the game. A. Dupont is all in the avoidance, he's a stealth player (among other aspects). No surprise he gets along so well with C. Kolbe in the Stade Toulousain ranks.

We don't really need any analysis, Geraint, though, do we? Dupont is simply the best the world has ever seen - and that includes Gareth Edwards. Dupont's brilliance was evident before the match against Italy. I've been following rugby for nearly sixty years, and am an avid Ireland supporter. @@GeraintDaviesGDD Geraint, there really is no comparison. Edwards was able to strut his stuff, more often than not, behind a dominant pack of forwards; Dupont doesn't require a cushion to showcase his remarkable talents; Pound-for-Pound they say in boxing, whichever element of the individual you contrast, i.e. pace, speed of thought, on-the-spot decision making, defence, positioning.... Dupont is in a different league; stating the obvious: Edwards graced the pitch in the amateur era when fitness levels and skill sets were nowhere near as demanding. Dupont is literally a 'one man team', able to win matches on his own. We've only had a glimpse of his genius so far; when he orchestrates wins over the All Blacks and Springboks ( next WC) the whole world will have no choice but to accord him the status he deserves.

I believe he is ours and I would not trade him for anybody in this world. That s about as far as I would go . But yeah he s mental... such a good lad as well, very humble and positive, loves the game so much and clearly has the mindset for super greatness. He ll improve the needed « trickery » that s necessary for great 9. But he makes it up with so many other aspects. He s kicking is very much improving. He can play 10 , his original position as well. But 9 suits him so great : a short guy with Jason Robinson legs and strength of a prop to fence defenders away around the rucks. So deadly in modern rugby IMO.

G, interesting analysis. Please don't be offended but consider adding subtitles. The rugby loving family is multilingual and every now and then one comes across a linguistic enigma. Still had great pictures to watch though😄
@GeraintDaviesGDD3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for taking a look. Are you a fluent English speaker? I'm fluent in both English and Welsh, but don't unfortunately speak other languages except for a basic grasp of French. So when I listen to things not spoken in either Welsh or English I have to use subtitles. Fortunately youtube provides that option, which hopefully you can use in future.

Great content overall, with brilliant analysis throughout. Well done Sir ! And thank you. Just a tiny detail, so you may save yourself some time and enjoy an extra year (who knows, with all those spared moments ?!) somehow... in Dupont, the letter "t" is mute. Such as it is for 95% of French names (ie. Thomas, Jalibert, Chat, Penaud, Marchand), mainly those from Latin and/or Celtic legacy.

Thank you, Gilles! I really appreciate your comment. I did make a bit of a mess of pronouncing the names! Hopefully you'll notice an improvement in the one I did last week following the France v England game? I've also just posted one following Keith Earls try at the weekend!

Jalibert or Ntamack?
@GeraintDaviesGDD3 жыл бұрын
oooo that's a big question! Big fan of both. I think Ntamack has a more rounded game and being a 10/12 is defensively very solid. Also very good tactical kicking game. Jalibert is more exciting to watch for me & his eye for the gap is second to none! So, Jalibert gets my vote as I just love seeing him take the gaps, but I'd love to see Ntamack playing 12 with him!
@yesdcotchin3 жыл бұрын
@@GeraintDaviesGDD but now they have Shaun Edwards, who do you think at 10 best suits their weird combination of impregnable defence and French flair? Would you still say Ntamack 12?
@GeraintDaviesGDD3 жыл бұрын
@@yesdcotchin You make a good point. The challenge is that Fickou is an incredible 12 & fits perfectly into the system in both attack and defence. I suppose Ntamack offers a different balance to the squad if they needed to change things up a bit!
@financialliberty23813 жыл бұрын
As a French, I would still say Ntamack for now because of his composure and passing but if Jalibert improves his pass (which I still find a bit suspicious), I would say Jalibert

@@GeraintDaviesGDD i know that it's not a popular opinion but I think Dupont would be even better at centre or even 10. With his out of this world running abilities, support lines and physical attributes, I think he would be even deadlier with more space than in 9, which he would have at centre or 10
@GeraintDaviesGDD3 жыл бұрын
@@financialliberty2381 At 5'8" he wouldn't be much of a centre in the modern game! He'd make a solid 10, but his strengths are so specific to 9, I don't think it would be a clear transition!
