I actually think mics like the wireless pros and DJI mics are massively underrated. I do wish people would use them with a lapel to look nicer however without doubt they have transformed the standard of quality for audio across pretty much every piece of ‘non filmmaker’ content across KZbin. I’d argue it’s actually the biggest camera gear advancement in the past 10 years because they’ve had such a big effect on production quality for online content. Also even if you use a better boom mic they are great to have as back ups in your kit because they are so small.
@monkeybull445Ай бұрын
Honestly! I use them all the time for my marketing job and it's such a godsend. I always insist on using the included lav mics to make things look as professional as possible even if it's a low-effort YT short. Always record internally to the mic pack just in case any weird interference happens
@ErrorTHАй бұрын
Yes, they raised the bar in audio quality and made good lav sound acessible to everyone. They also normalized having a mic in the frame for viewers. Still overrated though, very expensive for what they are and their lifecycle. My RODE wireless go II batteries bulged and self-festructed in a couple of years. This is a joke compared to almost eternal other mics. Software is lacking too.

Can't say M43 is overrated because everyone constantly shits on it aside from maybe the small community that loves it. You can get much much smaller zooms for M43 with much bigger ranges. If you are shooting say nature its almost a no brainer if you care about size. The full frame sensors have mostly caught up but lets compare the GH7 to the FX3. The GH7 has internal RAW, internal prores, 6k recording, 32 bit float, ARRI log, better internal stabilization. Now compared against the Nikon Z8 all it has is the 32 bit float and better stab. But it is quite a bit cheaper. If Lumix was able to develop a cheap M43 sensor that could do a 14 bit ADC readout and record 16 bit linear RAW, that could really push M43 back to the forefront. Camera tech has seemingly fizzled out lately though.
@ItsMidasProductionsАй бұрын
Yeah nobody ever talks about this when talking about any crop sensor camera. The features you get at the price point are just unmatched and for a lot of filmmakers, the extra capabilities is absolutely worth more than whatever technically better image they would get by going full frame at the same price range. Maybe a lot about the gh7 is overrated when you have an fx6 but compare it to an a7iv and suddenly it becomes a much better idea, especially if you’re doing (and I mean no slant by this) more than talking head youtube videos in a studio.
@mbvgliderАй бұрын
The thing is the GH7 and G9 II are amazing, but niche pro or semi-pro use is the only thing remaining for the system. Where are the sub-$1200 cameras that drew users to the system? The EM5 was a do it all camera that was affordable and way ahead of its time. The PEN and the GX cameras got a lot of people into the system, too. There’s no place for casual use of the system anymore. At this point, I feel like only Fuji cares about the advanced casual shooter and is occupying the spaces that LUMIX and Olympus used to occupy. If you’re not a professional videographer, how would GH7 be a better use of money than an A7 IV or A7C II, which are similarly priced and much well rounded?
@ianhamlett8839Ай бұрын

@joelgamble8410Ай бұрын
Second this. Recently got the Zoom F3 and most frequently use it to record opera singers (audition recordings and live performances), which used to be a scary experience on 24 bit portable recorders because their dynamic range is so massive and they can cause distortion even when not clipping. As a creator and filmmaker first that has from M4/3 to FF Sony, Lumix and even RED, I can safely say that M4/3 is totally worth it and competent, I know you are exaggerating when you say M4/3 is overrated, NOT every lens is huge, and not every GOOD and HIGHLY capable lens is or has to be huge, the only lens you mention whenever you talk about M4/3 is the 18-35 and you have used other lenses, that's not the only option come on, and besides the fact that ALMOST ALL (emphasis on almost) the KZbin community speaks bad and underestimates M4/3 because of the "smaller" sensor, it is dumb, I know you have your preferences sure and I totally get it, I have Sony and awesome glass for it, BUT I've used plenty of times my MFT gear because its more convenient and or equally capable as most FF systems currently. I have proven this plenty of times on my YT videos and recently demonstrated to one of my assistants how I can get the same quality results with my 2016 release GX85 + Lumix Pro 35-100 F2.8 compared to my A7IV + Sony 70-200 F4 Macro for my product shots, he couldn't tell the difference, so please stop talking bad about M4/3, its not overrated, it's not just for travel, and I could mention plenty of examples were it is more relevant than FF or APSC systems, any true professional would be capable of achieving great results in any sensor size.

And Gerald compared the 16mm Sigma to a 35mm FF. The Sigma is really an APSC lens with an MFT mount so it's bigger than it should be for MFT. He could have compared the 17mm Olympus which is a lot smaller and closer in terms of field of view.

This is in response to the Microphone comments. For Tik Tok and Reels, you basically have to lie to people when it comes to content. Professional content on Reels/TikTok DOESN'T work. I do a lot of content for people and they swipe away less when its done on a phone and the mic is showing. When a new business reaches out, I basically have to convince them to let me shoot it on my phone because its better for their needs. The expectations of the viewer is down to earth content done by non-professionals. Mics in frame, no professional lighting, and lightly scripted. Obviously when you go more niche like professional camera ops and things like that, they like pro kits. But the normal, 9-5er audience, they are more likely to not give it a chance.

There are advantages to both formats, and especially if you're shooting a telephoto shot...I can get a $20 70-300 (from the 90s) and paired with the 2x crop M43 sensor, it's magic! Then, on full frame you can get an inexpensive (but good) 35-70mm and have a decent, though moderate, wide angle shot...with less of that wide angle distortion that occurs with the M43 optics (because the full frame sensor doesn't require as short of a focal length, to get the wide effect, etc.) Also, you don't really have to buy different sets of lenses, if you manually focus, and I use full frame lenses on my M43 gear all of the time (especially when using a tilt/shift adapter).😀😀

i used to shoot m43 for our production studio and we phased them out for super35 and full frame panasonics. i will say the quality is surprising for m43 given the small form factor. there are benefits such as amazing ibis, and mobility for run and gun shooting which we needed them for. Great to have in a pinch. But I wouldn't inherently rely on it for top quality, controlled, studio shoots. or even some run and gun situations. #1, grain/low light can be difficult moreso than a full frame. #2, subject/background separation was harder to achieve especially at wider framing, especially a 2 shot interview at 24mm, even with fast lenses. Having said that, would be great to have a nifty M43 with a fast lens in your kitbag along with larger sensor options.

DJI Mic’s paired with a Sanken Lapel, highly underrated with the 32 bit float; especially considering how small the DJI device is compared to a traditional lav transmitter. No need for mixing either, the 32 bit float is perfect for just about everything. With that, I use the receiver just for monitoring or a scratch track, I bring in the internally recorded track on each of the transmitters. On set I usually put the receiver in my pocket with headphones going up my shirt just to listen for ruffling of the talents shirt, as well as any interrupting background noises. No time code but I roll for long periods of time with the traditional act of slating, or something as simple as snapping my finger in front of the lens if I’m close enough to the subject. Camera cages; Mark, if you have cage, why would you take it off to put into storage? Just leave it on the camera at all times. I would say they are neither overrated or underrated considering everyone uses them, and for good reason(s).

MFT has advantages that are overlooked. For example, the ability to achieve magnification using a 100mm lens instead of needing a 200mm lens (full frame). Sure, the grain levels may be higher sometimes but if the lens has a relatively large aperture, and/or the lighting is sufficient, you can achieve better fine detail rendition because it's easier to achieve larger pixel density than a APS-C, Full Frame, & Medium Format.

I think the issue with m43 is that it is a budget telephoto system. But it gets measured in categories that are not reasonable. Or by people that don’t really mention money in the equation. It can take all sort of pictures, and also give you 600mm on a 300usd budget. If you compare 50mm vs 50mm it makes less sense. But add the wildlife kit and you need to spend some serious money on other systems to match the quality. Now after shooting m43 since the em-5, I am happy to spend on big FF lenses. But I don’t think you can easily sell a Nikon z8 and the 400f4.5 to most people.

@ No, but they are in front of the FF equivalent. If someone told you the 300mm f4 cost 3k usd, and looks almost as good as a 600mm f4 that cost 12k usd. It’s pretty clear that one costs less. Budget is not a derogatory term. The 100-400 are half the price of the 200-800, etc. If you are paying 18k usd to crop twice into a 61mp picture, then maybe you could have done with m43.

Tour Box is an excellent editing console. Small, simple and very intuitive. I’m now adding a Streamdeck to it. I’m too dumb to remember keyboard shortcuts.

14:31 Half cages (when available) are where it’s at for a nice small rig. I like an unobstructed camera handle and only typically use a couple accessories.

Regarding 32-bit float: Recording thunderstorms! I wouldn't know how else to do it if you want to capture all of it - the rain, the distant rumbles and the epic fireworks right above your head.

i had a m4/3 system and it's much smaller and lighter for wildlife. the 300 f/4 (600mm f/4 full frame equiv) is about half the size and weight of a full frame. f/4 in m4/3 is the same as f/4 in full-frame for exposure.

Oh my are you wrong on the editing console. I have a full set of Tangent Elements and it has so massively sped up my audio and color correction that I actually look forward to doing it now. It has also sped up all of my clip organization. The Element set is quite a bit larger than a Loupedeck or similar so maybe it is all of the extra knobs, buttons, and wheels that help make it worthwhile.

Gerald! If you liked the prores on iphone then please give motioncam a shot. Shoots raw on android. No noise reduction oversharpening crap but pure RAW video and can also convert that stream to record prores etc. now this is a real game changer!

Loved this...going to make another cup of coffee and return to read the MFT drama that I'm sure is in the comments. As a MFT enthusiast myself, I think that "having a sense of humour about your tiny sensor" is highly underrated.

CPL filters are underrated for nature photography, sometimes you get really surreal photos when the reflections from the leaves and water is removed
@JankyJymClimbingАй бұрын
CPL and UV filters are very different. I don't think anyone would argue they cpl first are useful. It is the UV aspect of the uv filters that are entirely unnecessary on digital now.

For photography, m43 is definitely underrated though.
@arunashamalАй бұрын
dude no.. there is a case to be made MFT and videography, considering the bells and whistles you get, for photography..lol not even a question way overrated and not needed, it is worse in every way for photography, non of them even have a decent af system.
@ThungStudiosАй бұрын
Depends on the type of photography. When you need more focal range with lighter gear, it makes complete sense. A 70-200 lens on MFT is a 140-400 FF equivalent with the same size lens. If you don't care about shallow depth of field and need that extra zoom, then obviously that's helpful @@arunashamal
@ThungStudiosАй бұрын
@@arunashamalAlso both Lumix and Olympus have great phase detect AF now. You're years behind
@arunashamalАй бұрын
@ they do have pdaf now, but not even close to something like R5 or current A7 camera is. Infact a nikon or canon dslr like a d850 will track a subject more accurately than modern m43 af.
@arunashamalАй бұрын
@@ThungStudios yes when you have to add different caveats to disqualify fill frame systems, then m43 will look like a great deal, infact a point and shoot would look like a great deal if you add enough conditions to make it look better!

Those wireless microphones are life savers. I use them for my wedding videos with a lav mic plugged into them, hidden under the grooms jacket. I have found this one mic is good enough to also capture the bride.
@raeisjawadАй бұрын
12:17 but can't you plug a lav mic into them, and then hide that + internal 32bit recording on newer ones. Currently debating traditional lav packs vs wireless ones, and I can't figure the steep price difference 😅

Once you wrap your head around the color spaces in Davinci, youll never be able to go back to Premiere. Matching different cameras? Getting your footage from log to grade ready? Forget about it. It takes a couple clicks and the result is way better. It is NOT very user friendly, so it takes a bit. But its SO much better.

This episode was a fun to watch, but I have to disagree about the 5D Mark II. I bought one six months ago along with the 85mm f/1.8 lens, and while the images are almost perfect, the camera has some serious issues. The autofocus feels really outdated, and you have to work hard to get it right. The most disappointing part was the video quality. I’m not sure if it was the lens or my camera was bad, but the quality just wasn’t there my Canon 600D delivered better results. The footage looked smudged, even at f/4.6 the image lacked sharpness, and for some reason the colors didn’t appeal to me. I ended up selling it and buying the Sony A6700, and I couldn’t be happier, but I would love to buy the 5DIII it was my dream camera when i was in highschool and i would love to own one

I think Adobe Suite is very underrated, especially if you are a professional..Apart from PS, LR, Premier etc you also get after effects, illustrator, Indesign everything. You get a complete creative workshop that are cross compatible for very little money. You used to buy those software like $1000 a pop back before subscription model!

13:13 interesting take on mic systems, i use the dji mics but i also hate seeing mics hanging off talent as well so i use lavaliers and hide them you taught me that Mark Bone. Regarding the quality of audio i record internally and it sounds amazing so not sure on that take but love the opinion and explanation.

I think what every m4/3 shooter here is forgetting is that m4/3 can be speed boosted all the way up to a near super 35mm crop. Additionally, m4/3 can adapt more lenses than any other mount. Its not better than full frame, but its almost as good as super 35 with more lens options

The consumer grade wireless systems have a ton of features, but don't actually work that well in everyday use. They are cheaply made fragile plastics, the mics don't sound good, the have a LOT of self noise, the non replaceable batteries don't last long, they have small buttons that are hard to find and work, and are time consuming to turn on and off, no way to use xlr for 24bit into cameras etc. There's no comparison to a pro system in terms of everyday use, usability, and sound quality. If you're using them to make money buy once cry once.

I want to talk about Micro 4/3rds. First, let me admit ... I know nothing. I'm a total newb. And I bought a micro 4/3rds camera. Why? Size. Weight. Lens size. Ok, so what's my application? I am filming skiing. And sure, you might just say, "use an action cam." Have you seen that footage? There's an action cam "look" that I'm trying to get away from. I want the next step up. I don't need low light. I don't need full frame, my subject is a skier. I need it to be light and easy to move around because I'm skiing with it at speeds up to 40mph. Lens and body stabilization is a nice feature. So ... does it have it's applications? Maybe? I'm hoping that I can downgrade the body of my camera to more and more cheaper bodies that still work with the good lenses I'm buying. Why? Because there's gonna be accidents and I'm gonna have to replace stuff. That's why I went micro 4/3rds. Now, I realize that a lot of the professional footage I see is shot on like a Red. I'm not there yet. Maybe some day.
