'Neuschwanstein' is about a certain combination of beauty and setting. That there are many others, and for people with more profound likely even more interesting, castles, does not change such facts. There are castles and palaces not only in Germany, but all over Europe. Take a look at the royal castles on the Loire in France, Schönbrunn Palace near Vienna, the Vienna Hofburg, both in Austria, the old royal castle that towers over the city of Bratislava in Slovenia, Hohenzollern Castle in Germany. There are so many examples. The nobility, kings and emperors ruled Europe for centuries and all these people have left their architectural mark on Europe. Examples of classical antiquity are the Acropolis of Athens, the sports ruins in Olympia in Greece. In ancient times, sporting competitions took place there, which the ancient Greeks called the Olympic Games. The ruins of Delphi, where the Oracle of Delphi had its seat in ancient times. The Temple of Poseidon in southern Italy. In Greece there are numerous other temple ruins and on the Greek island of Crete there are the ruins of the royal palace of Knossos. In France, Italy, Spain and all around the Mediterranean, the remains of Roman aqueducts have been preserved. In Rome, you can still see the remains of the Roman Forum and, miraculously, the conference building of the ancient Roman Senate has been preserved. You can find many more examples with photos on Wikipedia. In the German city of Aachen you can still see the ancient throne room of Emperor Constantine the Great and in the German city of Cologne you can admire in the underground how durable the Romans built and the Cologne sewer system is still largely Roman today. Many of the large cities in Europe are of Roman origin, for example Vienna, which emerged from the Roman fort Vindobona and Cologne was founded by the Roman general Agrippa in Augustan times under the name Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. Over the centuries, the city's name was shortened to Cologne. Europe is not Disneyland, even if the majority of you Americans think so. It's all real living history you can touch!

The _Braunschweiger Residenzschloss_ (residential palace) in Braunschweig (Brunswick) in Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) was restored starting in 2006 from the original building blueprints and old photos, using 600 pieces of the original facade and its original bronze statues that had been saved & put into storage when it was torn down in 1960s. It had been built in 1931-41 as the palace for the Welfenkönig (King of the Guelphs) of the noble House Hannover (the same noble family the British Windsors are from, they changed their German name during WW2 and adopted the name from Castle Windsor). But it was badly damaged by bombardment and fires during WW2. Behind the restored 19th century facade of the _Braunschweiger Residenzschloss_ it now contains a large shopping mall with various small shops and restaurants and a medical center. A lot of restored medieval or classicist architecture in cities, like former guild town houses, city castles and palaces now house urban administration offices or shops or hotels behind their facades. Castles and manors outside cities often have their insides modernized with modern glass windows, electricity, flowing water etc and turned into hotels or rentable venues for medieval-style festivals, roleplaying/LARPing conventions or seminars.

Sorry, it is hard to describe in English. I tried finding pictures, but they don't show just how incredibly high up it is. And afterward you can visit the castle in Sigmaringen close by. Another beautiful one, but of a different kind. Those two really got my immagination going, as I love the older ones, too. Another amazing castle is the Veste Coburg. And also the Festung Rosenberg in the town near by - Kronach, I think. Those are in Franken (Northern part of Bavaria.) Interesting History there and the connections to the British Monarchy is explained there, but you learn about those in the Stadtschloss in Coburg. Another thing, we have so many different words for Castles and Palaces in German. Burg, Schloss, Palast, Festung, etc. Are there any more besides 'castle' and 'palace' in English? 'Stronghold' maybe, right?

I have history with Heildeberg, so Schloss Heidelberg but then I also have some fun stories about Neuschwanstein (I especially love the history about Ludwig who build it, his mysterious death and the fact that the castle is not nearly finished, it was supposed to have a turkish bath and some terasses outdoor that were never build) And since you mentioned in another video - that the inside is not to your liking... Actually it was build only for Ludwig to see - and he was very much into myths and legends and that's how he build it Probably my varoite is Burg Eltz though, since it's sort of near and there are so many nice hiking paths near ot. Or The Drachenfels - although that's more of a ruin. But in the Siebengebirge there are also tons of old ruis and castles.

A castle could not be conquered before the invention of siege engines. Even after that, a siege lasted months and cost the besiegers a fortune, which is why most sieges were broken off after a while. Castles were not built for war, but for peace. The more castles were built by a ruler, the more the land around it was pacified. Only nobles were knights and if they had not inherited anything, they became robber barons and marauded through the countryside. The castles offered protection because the attacks were concentrated on the surrounding villages, where there was livestock and much more to be taken, and the farmers could retreat to the castle to at least save their lives. The people provided for and fed the lord of the castle, who in return was obliged to protect his farmers, if necessary by force of arms. The last place of refuge in the event of a storming was the so-called "Burgfried". This word also contains the word peace - "fried" = "Frieden"

1:29 Reichsburg Cochem was in 1294 pawned by King Adolf of Nassau to the Archbishop of Trier for a loan to fund his coronation. Adolf's successor Albrecht of Habsburg could not (or did not want to) pay back the loan, so he appointed the Archbishop(s) as heriditary Burgraves for this Imperial castle and the associated estates. During the Nine Year's war (also war of the Palatinate succession) it was - like many other castles in the region - conquered and destroyed by French troops (sent by Louis XIV). After the Vienna Congress the region became Prussian as the "Rhine Province", and In 1868 a Berlin merchant - Louis Fréderic Jacques Ravené, descendent of huguenot refugees from France - bought the ruins to rebuilt the castle as a summer seat for his family. 1:40 The Wartburg in Thuringia was the seat of the Landgraves of Thuringia and Hesse until 1247. Between 1211 and 1228 Elisabeth of Thuringia lived here, born as Princess Elisabeth of Hungary, married to Landgrave Ludwig IV in 1221, who died in 1227 on his way to a crusade; his brother Heinrich Raspe abhorred the religious devotion of Elisabeth, her dedication to help the poor and her gullibility to her father confessor Konrad of Marburg, so she had to move to Marburg, where she died in 1231 in a hospital founded by her and was immediately canonized as Saint Elisabeth. Heinrich Raspe died without children (after his nephew Hermann II had died at the age of 18), and after some disputes Thuringia came to House Wettin, while Hesse became its own Landgraviate ruled by Elisabeth's daughter Sophie, by marriage Duchess of Brabant. After Martin Luther came under Imperial ban in 1521, he was "kidnapped" by soldiers of Elector Friedrich III of Saxony (House Wettin) and brought to the Wartburg, where he lived under a false name and finished his translation of the Bible. In the early 19th century the Wartburg became a center of the nationalist and republican movement; it was the place where for the first time the German flag in black-red-gold was shown. 2:29 Heidelberg was for a long time the capital of the Palatinate of the Rhine, the most wealthy and powerful Palatinate with the Empire (a Palatinate or Kaiserpfalz was originally an Imperial residence, managed by a Count Palatinate, who also ruled over the associated estates - like the word "palace" "Pfalz" refers to the Palatine hill in Rome, where the antique Roman Emperors built their residences), ruled by a side branch of House Wittelsbach (the main branch were the Dukes of Bavaria; after the Bavarian branch went extinct in 1777, the branch Palatinate-Sulzbach took over until 1799 and was superseded by the branch Palatinate-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld, which became in 1806 the first kings of Bavaria. Heidelberg was partly destroyed by French troops during the Nine Years' war which broke out after the death of the last Protestant Elector of the Palatinate Karl II, as Louis XIV claimed hereditary titles in the name of Karl's sister Elisabeth Charlotte, called Liselotte, married to the Duke of Orleans, the brother of Louis XIV. After a few years reconstruction started, but was halted after lightning caused a fire destroying additional buildings. The Electors of the Palatinate then moved the capital to their new-built residence at Mannheim. 3:13 Schloss Schwerin was originally a castle which first buildings were erected in the 10th century, but the currently oldest parts are from the 16th century. It was the seat of the Dukes of Mecklenburg. Between 1844 and 1857 it was largely redesigned in the style of the palaces in the French Loire valley. Nowadays it houses the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and some museums; the gardens are open to the public. 3:25 Schloss Nordkirchen was originally a fortified castle, which was sold in 1694 to the Prince-Bishop of Münster, whose family started to redesign it as a palace and residence in the Baroque style (but ruined the family fortunes in the process). 3:57 the castle in Nuremberg was an Imperial castle managed by a Burgrave (House Hohenzollern). For a long time it contained the Imperial treasure chamber holding he Imperial regalia. 6:15 Sigmaringen is another Hohenzollern castle, of the branch Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, erected on a rock looking over the river Danube. 9:05 Glücksburg belongs to the Danish Royal family (House Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, a branch of which is also the Royal Family of Norway). 9:25 the Burg zu Burghausen (lit. translating to "castle at castle home") holds the title of the longest castle in Europe and the Guinness World Record of the longest castle complex in the world. In consists of six castle courtyards one after another (five of which are designated as forecourts) and has a total length of 1051 meters. 12:52 Schloss Hohentübingen belongs to the University of Tübingen.
