So I'm a baker. At Christmas, you have to be. Seriously, it's an obligation - for at least one person per family. It's like, the first born inherits the family manor, the second born must bake the christmas cookies.
The song is: Making Me Nervous (Me Likey Bouncy Mix) by babble720.

Hi! Just want you to know I'm still enjoying this video. I play it every year to get pumped for making my own excessive amounts of various Christmas cookies. I have this compulsion and it may be genetic. I still remember how my mind was blown when you said, "...a good German housewife takes pride in making as many varieties as possible." I love the music, the pan of the cookie spread, and all the details of you making them. Thanks! 😁

Your idea about a new one every year is good! We normally have the same everytime. Zimtsterne, Vanillekipfel, Himbeerherzen (like your stars, but heart- shaped), Engelsaugen and normal dekorated Plätzchen.

This brings back memories when my kids were little. I'd make the dough and they would cut and decorate the cookies! We had a large assortment of cookie cutters, including hands and feet!! My favorite were the cream cheese cookies! I wonder if I still have the recipe... great video, by the way!!

I'm from the south-western part of Germany and I call them Plätzchen at Christmas time and Kekse the rest of the year (although I almost never bake cookies when it's not Christmas time). Btw. a great way to make the Herzoginnenplätzchen is to use two spoons: one to scoop up the dough and a second one scoop the dough from the spoon onto the baking sheet.

My parents are immigrants with me being the first child born in the US. My father a Frankfurter, my mother a longer story. My father's parents still lived in Frankfurt when they were alive and one big highlight at Christmas was receiving the packages from Germany. One package was always a large box lined with a plastic bag and filled to the brim with cookies. We called them Weinachts Kuchen. Or perhaps it was Kuchien. (Sorry if I've misspelled. My German isn't as good anymore.)

My stepmom hails from southern Germany, she starts about a month and a half before christmas, or at least had to this year because of her job. next year, she's going to put me to the task of Plaetzchhen backen. So much work, but the payoff is so delicious.

Well, theoretically it could be a diminutive form of 'Platz', which either means a town square, or a place (note the similiarities there). In the first case it would be a (somewhat cute) form of a tiny town square. The second version would also be a small, cute seat or even a cozy seating arrangement at a table in a restaurant. Last version is any locality, such as a small meadow, gazebo, always in its diminutive form. I don't know where the term 'Plätzchen' comes from etymologically.

The German word "keks" is actually a commercial word created by German company Bahlsen in 1889. They just changed the spelling of their product "Leibnitz-Cakes" because when pronounced wrong the word "cakes" could have been associated with the German word for "poo". The plural function of the "s" was soon forgotten so today Germans call a single cookie "Keks". When it comes to old time traditions like christmas Germans tend to go back to older vacabulary and call their cookies "Plaetzchen".

So my seven year old son has a school project to make food from his ancestral home. And he's lucky enough to, y'know, choose German food. And since my mother makes a huge variety of wickedly good cookies, we're doing springerle. So when I saw this in the feed, we were both excited to see if you made them as well. Mild disappointment was assuaged by seeing chickens get sprinkled mid-dance!

For me, Plätzchen are things like Zimtsterne, Mandelbögen, Lebkuchen that are ONLY eaten at Christmas, whereas Kekse can be eaten at any time of the year... I spent most of my time in Germany on the RLP/Hessen boarder if that's any indication. I really miss Zimtsterne. They're my favourite... I wonder if Aldi sell them here...
