I just found a new favorite comedian! Now all I have to do is to freshen up my skills in the German language, that I have not used in 30 years. I remember "neunundneunzig luftballons" though, that should get me started...

This video has kind of helped me understand why german humor is hard to understand for many people. A lot of it is just saying outrageous shit in a pretty normal manner and just relying on the listener to recognize it as an ironic/sarcastic statement
@IsaakHunt4 жыл бұрын
That goes at least for Böhmermann. Other comedians rely on a more "formal" stand-up setting. But I do think that sarcasm and a bit of self deprication is somehow an integral part of German humour.

Biggest problem for Böhmermann is, that a big part of his genius is his eloquence, speed of talking and catchy pronounciation in German. It all gets lost, when he's talking in English immediately, cause then he's got to think before he speaks.
@Schleimkeim196 жыл бұрын
You mean the biggest part of his genius is that he isn't able to form a whole sentence? I mean the guy can barely speak I'm really confused why he was on the radio and now is on tele.
@jenna_maria5 жыл бұрын
Carlos Chilipimmel He can actually speak English quite well for an adult who most likely didn’t need to use a lot of English throughout his life, so while it’s obviously some rusty high school level second language that was brushed up, it was brushed up pretty well.
@nichl4745 жыл бұрын
@@jenna_maria Did you even hear a German speak with rusty English skills? No, because most Germans forget almost everything and are only able to give the most rudimentary responses a few years after exiting high school. Jan's strongly above-average grasp on the english language, that even teachers could compete with, is an exception. I live in Germany and go to a school that would be the equivalent to an American high school and they can't even use the right form of "be" and forget to put the "s"es on words. They literally speak worse than his "rusty English". I'm literally the exception as a student together with a few other people.
@jenna_maria5 жыл бұрын
Nichl As I said, it was “brushed up pretty well”. You can’t deny his accent and some minor mistakes, most people his age who are of the same education standard as him speak a similar level of English. It’s not like he studied English at university, so yes most of his English has its roots in his high school education. I went to school in Germany as well and I have my Abitur and a lot of people in my English classes, even those who hadn’t been the best English speakers during high school, were able to improve their English for their jobs as adults. He isn’t on an English teacher level, I’m sorry but your English teachers must not have been good if you think so. That said, allow me to add that I’m compring high school to the German Oberstufe and not the German Mittelstufe.
@vyrnius4 жыл бұрын
just wanted to write: never heard Böhmermann saying "ehmm" that often 😂
@Aaackermann5 жыл бұрын
I think Böhmi tried to compress the story of his insult poem too much. The most important information would have been, that it was a response to a very harmless piece of a german show called "Extra-3", where Erdogan said he got insulted by the show. THEN Böhmermann did this Poem to educate Erdogan about the difference of humour and an insult! So that is why I find this poem so hilarious and cleverly presented! Poor guy, he always gets very serious when it comes to this topic!

Ferminiveau honestly, this can be seen from 2 sides. 1) the nation's people 2) the spread of propaganda and maybe 3) the accusations or delegations of the west. Maybe its our people who are stupid But maybe its the propaganda that has its place all over the country. But if not, this adds up 1). Whether something good or bad happens in turkey, the west is showing off turkey as a country with extremes in a negative way. Therefore the turkish gov. (erdogan) can point the finger at the west and start a discussion.
@arminiuscherusci44105 жыл бұрын
@@buuuba7022 You seem like a turkish person that lives in Germany and hence im going to reply you in german: Das ist doch lächerlich.

For foreigners it might be easier to understand if you look at him like a satirical prankster. His stage personality is different from his private personality, which he likes to disguise from the public by inventing contrived stories. Still, his personal experiences often influence his work as a comedian. For instance his father was a policeman so he knows a lot about the matter. He made a spoof rap song called "Ich hab Polizei" which was a criticism to wannabe-gangsters but at the same time a criticism to the police force. He f**ks with everybody. Take the moment at 2:28 when he said "I'm completely in line with my German chancellor". Nobody laughed because they didn't realize he was being ironic. What I am trying to say is that his humor can be very subtle and that you can't take anything he says seriously just like that. He wants you to question everything. That includes breaking taboos.

Some context: In March of 2017 another German satire program "extra 3" broadcast a song lampooning Erdogan and his autocratic politics. Erdogan responded by summoning the German ambassador and demanding the cancellation of the show. Then, in answer to Erdogan's overreaction and the public discussion about it, Böhmermann read his "deliberately hurtful" poem, rife with apparent falsehoods, so as to illustrate where the line between free speech and defamation really lies. The essence of the joke was this: "No, Erdogan, what they did was perfectly fine, what I'll do now, on the other hand, isn't." Also: Who does Böhmermann think he is appearing on international talk shows with his atrocious English? (edit: changed the wording a bit to prevent further misunderstandings)
@PerHultqvist6 жыл бұрын

1. "atrocious English": 8:40 2. "deliberately hurtful": That's the point he made. It wasn't about saying crass things to be edgy. He's not an insult comic. The joke was: Free speech has its limits, and just so you know what they are, THIS is was you cannot do... and then he does it.

I´m turkish citizen and absolutly agains Erdogan. After this happend i try to find out in Internet "whats going on" and "what Böhmermann said". I only find poem...not more not less, like turks like me. I didn´t like it at first, even i hate Erdogan. It was not so funny....after many month i found in a "illegal internetpage" whole show, what he said BEVOR this poem and its is ofcource very different thing if you understand whole contex. So not big suprise many "Erdogan´s Lemmings" get crazy.

But Austria's empire had nothing left to take away after the First World War. that is why Germany did not get the sole blame but most of the punishments.

@ninaschust36943 жыл бұрын
Wanna laugh? Try searching for "Öttinger spricht englisch". It is a german politician trying hard to communicate. No joke. An accent is just a foreign language spoken with the rules and sounds of the native language. You can do this with any two languages to several degrees. Certainly this also works with your language. 😉

So to every english speaking reading this, He did this to show people how far satire is legally allowed to go. He uses his freespeech rights full out, to show what he can legally do. (and afterwards still get arrested because Germany is a coward in these situations since the 2000s and Erdogan does whatever he wants, even if hes not following the law) And I absolutely love how they think hes meaning what he says, hes been f**king with them all the time. Like 5:11 that was a joke. But they think hes meaning it. Mabye because they think "Oh Germans have no humor"
