I made this today. Delicious! Opted not to add streusel , used cinnamon sugar instead. Served with whipped cream. The plums are very juicy so we’ll have to eat it all up. 😂 Danke für das Rezept.

Darn...I think our “sugar plum” season is over in northern New Jersey...I think they are available in August..but that won’t keep me from looking! This is an old time family favorite...my late Tante Trudel use to make the Best! With her went the recipe and I’ve been looking for a similar recipe for some time! This looks close enough to hers for me!!!! And YES they NEED to be Sugar Plums or No it’s just not the same!!!! Lol....Thank you so much for this ...

My mother is a huge fan of crumbles, so when I showed her this she told me that she has a new dessert. Turns out my Grandma used to make some plum dessert from Russia for my dad when he was little, so my mother is now going to surprise him with this tonight. Thank you for another fantastic recipe you are turning out to be my favorite baker/cook on here.

Oh my gosh this brings amazing memories of my Omas kitchen in Rosenheim…when I make this it is gone at one sitting…at least the version I make…my mother was not a cook so when I ran across a recipe I couldn’t help but try it out..the tart fresh flavors and time of year a very small window to create this favorite of mine.I’m excited to try your recipe and reminisce about the smells and memories in the small house kitchen of Omas and the wonderful end results always created there…thank you so much for your time energy and skills sharing with us…I’ve been here 60 years now in the Deep South Coming from Bavarian Alps at the age of ten to the swamps of Georgia..quite a culture shock especially for my mother but we adapt and every place has a beauty all its own…stay blessed

I grew up with this! We have an Italian prune tree in my moms backyard. I used to have one in our first house. My mom would put a bit of sugar and cinnamon over the plums and a bit of bread crumbs ( to soak up some of the plum juices I am sure, never streusel. When she cut the plums she cut them in half like you did but kept the halves connected then cut a little slice in both halves on opposite sides. That opened the plums up and they laid flat against the dough. A yummy desert that I have wonderful memories eating. Thank you for sharing! ❤️

The breadcrumbs idea is new to me, so is the cutting on the opposite side of the plum. I will try that, it seems to make a lot of sense. Thank you for sharing your moms knowledge. ❤️

My mother used to make this cake every fall at plum harvest. The wonderful thing about this cake is that it freezes really well. She wrapped the cake in foil and then plastic freezer bags. Of course she had to spend a couple of weekends of heavy baking to be able to have enough to freeze; because this plum cake was great with coffee, milk, as dessert, or for any in between meal reason one could make up, lol. Of course streusels were always picked off by the kids while the cake was cooling.

I lived in Germany for two years and my landlady taught me to make this as I loved it so very much. It is my sons favorite. I would also make it in mini pans to put in my husband and children's lunch. My son married 30 years ago but still requests I make him some to take in his lunch to work. Please try this recipe as it is very delicious. It is part of our Holiday tradition meal. I'm so pleased you added it to your videos.

I love your videos! The Italian prune plums are only available in my area here in the southwestern US for about 2 weeks late August. My friend told me her Grandmother sometimes froze the plums she grew at her place in Germany. I tried that 2 years ago, bought extra ones, quartered and pitted them, put them in a large tub of about 3 1/2 lbs of plums (exactly enough for one Zwetschgenkuchen as my friend's Grandmother's recipe calls them.) Her Grandmother's recipe uses Murbeteig pastry instead of the yeast dough, more of a shortbread piecrust than what I would call a cake. A year later I got thawed the plums out and made the pastry. In thawing out, they were almost too mushy to use and a large amount of the liquid had to be drained out before arranging them on the pastry base. Not much to look at, but it tasted mostly the same as the one made with the fresh fruit. The fresh fruit ones are beautiful if you arrange the pieces of plums in a nice pattern on the pastry. Figuring friend's Grandmother probably uses the frozen plums in a compote or jam kind of situation. I ended up straining the leftover liquid and made a delightful syrup out of it!! Frozen plums not quite as good for kuchen, but it did work.

If plums are too hard or not completely ripened, I find placing them in a microwave for a short time, after they have been sliced, softens them up quite nicely. Alternately they can be boiled for a short time while still whole. We learned these tricks out of the necessity of impatience, when we desired plum cake so much, we just couldn't wait for the plums to ripen naturally, lol.

The Plums (Zwetschgen) are not the normal Plums we typically see in grocery stores here in the US....the Zwetschgen plums are called Italian Plums or also fresh Prune Plums here in the US and are typically only availabe fresh late August/September. Also, it helps to cut a slit half way through on each half for better placement and better baking. This can also be done by cutting a cross (one side only half way through) on the bottom of the plum before removing the stone. The Zwetschge plum has a cling free stone, which is nice, the flesh is firmer. The larger typical plums have more moisture and can make your cake a bit soggy, and many of them do not have cling free stones, making stone removal more difficult.
