The reason there is a smaller dining table in the kitchen area is because most (or a lot of) americans eat breakfast at the kitchen countertop or table rather than in a formal dining room. the only time my family uses the formal dining room table is when we have guests for a family gathering on holidays, or if we're just throwing a party.

its pretty standard in my area of CT (a 40 minute train ride away from NYC). We do not have a finished basement though because of radon gas. Most of my neighbors houses are wayyy nicer than this house though. over a million dollar price tag on a lot of those. There is no way this house would be affordable today though. I could never live here if it was purchased today. its a 1 minute walk from the beach so the property tax alone is about about $18,000/yr. I'm very lucky that that house is completely paid off, it only cost like $60,000 in the 70s. its now valued at an insane and disgusting price. He persisted about mowing it himself simply because it bothers him to have the lawn at different lengths so he’d feel a lot better if he could mow the whole thing so it looks even. When you see a house with a fridge "hole" surrounded by cabinets, but the fridge pushes 20cm into the room, you notice. Fact: the area (sq.footage) of the basement and attic are not included in the size of the home. 3,500 sq.ft. is the "livable square footage." The basement and/or attic can be converted into livable space in the future at the homeowners discretion. In this case there is 3500 sq.ft. of livable area of the 7,000 sq.ft. of building. The living area equals 3,500 sq.ft.; the attic equals 1,750 sq.ft; the basement equals 1,750 sq.ft. 4 x 1,750 = 7,000 7,000 ÷ 2 (floors) = 3,500 3,500 sq.ft. Also, garages are not included in the sq. footage of homes.

In the US, the laundry room might be on the 2nd floor, the 1st floor, or the basement. The advantage of a 2nf floor laundry room is that if a house has 2 stories, the bedrooms are usually on the 2nfdfloor, and that's where clothes are kept. If the laundry room is on the 2nd floor, you don't have to take the clothes far to wash them. In the US we have half bathrooms (toilet/sink) and full bathrooms (toilet, sink, and shower). Normally half baths stay on the lower floors for guest and full bathrooms on the upper floors where you will find most bedrooms in houses like this (You will also find most laundry rooms upstairs due to where this is where most Americans will be living/sleeping unless you have a single floor house.) You will find these mostly in master bedrooms (rooms which have a full bathroom connected to it.) Or if there is no master bedroom then it will be shared amongst the bedrooms upstairs/ and or if you have a house with one level they will at least be concentrated around where the bedrooms would be. He also lives in Conneticut in the US which is less populated compared to some states on the direct east and west coast of the US where there is higher per capita American citizen living in. This same house in higher populated states can go up to I from what I've seen for as low as 300 (Just a guesstimate on my part as I live in NJ) to if you have a high paying job/salary/whatever you do, upwards towards 600,000 for mid-to-high median making Americans. It generally will get cheaper the further inward towards mid-west US and also alot of southern states. I will also add that most median bracket Americans take care of their lawns to a smaller extent like this because we have town run I think or whatever HOA (From my limited knowledge in NJ) which will fine you in some states on not having clean lawns in newer communities for not maintaining your lawn. Landscaping is a big business in the US which are people that maintain lawns for a fee. Normally as well at least from what I've seen you will have an actual dining room for major holidays (where you would invite guest) and my family calls them sun rooms where we place smaller tables for every day use for the family for dinner.

This same logic is why nearly no person self identifies as being wealthy. To the human mind, our own experience is the zero in the equation, but that doesn't math out.

If you have a nice home, you typically want a nice lawn. Also homes here in the USA very in sizes and cost. Lot sizes also tend to be larger as you live away from a larger city center. As for garages, those also vary in the number of cars they can hold. I myself have a two-car attached garage but added a second garage several years ago. The main 2-car is for daily drivers, my wife's and my car. The second garage is for two other older cars I have as well as all the tools and parts. The 2-car garage is basically 20x20 feet. The second one is 24x35 feet and is a solid 3 car garage with a lot of extra room. The size of the homes, number of bedrooms, bathrooms, other rooms all depend on how much you want to spend, what you need, and where it is. Also homes here in the US may or may not have a basement. That often depends on the location in the country. Down at the southern US basements aren't as typical whereas the further north you go the foundations have to be dug below the frost line. If you're already having to dig 6 feet down for the frost line you typically have a full basement. In general space tends to be tighter in the older parts of the US, like the east coast which was settled earlier in history. As you move west area there is a lot more open area so homes tend to have more of a yard.

What constitutes a very good lawn varies greatly on where you live. In some places people don’t have anything but smooth cut grass on a flat section of ground, others have multitudes of decorative flowers and or garden beds strewn throughout. In this neighborhood most houses have about 4 1/2 acres. One neighbor has a horse but you need at least an acre and a half for that. The house next-door has a half an acre, and one of the houses (six houses away), roughly a quarter of a mile (400 m) Away, has 8 acres. Before anyone starts thinking this is somewhere in a deep rural area, we are 10 minutes from the Philadelphia city limits in Pennsylvania. This property has 37 trees on it, not including the three I just cut down over the weekend. My neighbor’s driveway has more than that lining each side of it that he planted himself almost 50 years ago. In short, what your lawn looks like, varies greatly based on the train and region of the country you’re in. Plus, we have front lawns, Upper and lower side lawns (or left and right, depending upon perspective and location of the house.) and rear lawns, Or a combination of several of those. Our last house was right at the street, and the width of our property wasn’t much wider than the house and driveway, but the property went back 400 feet (120 m) so it was all backyard.

Newer homes MAY have second-floor laundry rooms, but first-floor (or basement in older homes) is more common. I want my laundry room on the first floor because I don't want to run upstairs to move laundry to the dryer, then back up 15 minutes later to take out the most delicate items, then back up again, etc.. This is why I have a one-story ranch!

You have the formal dining room for when you have guests over or for holiday dinners, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, the smaller table in the kitchen is for everyday breakfast, lunch and dinner use. A bathroom could be with just a sink and toilet or it could be with a shower and/or a tub as well.

He could literally have any type of bathroom/powder room (2pc sink/toilet, 3pc sink/toilet/shower, 4pc sink/toilet/shower/tub) down in the basement. He could make it an entirely different living area that he could rent out and still have room enough for storage, a media room and a different laundry room, etc. It is common to have different colors in every room.

One thing to concider about a big home is that, if you arent doing anything in a room, it isnt getting messy so you dont have to clean it as often. If he is alone or has 1 person (Becky) living there, as long as they pick up what they put down, keeping that big house clean is easy.

Connecticut has many nice areas. Some people commute to work in NYC from parts of Connecticut. The basement is an important part of a house like this. Many people decorate the basement into a game room, craft shop area, and sometimes a guest room. Many people will install a half or full bathroom in the basement, especially if you have guests, or are entertaining in the basement. It's convenient so guests don't have to walk upstairs to the main floor or upper floor.

Since our home is only 2 bedrooms, a living room, and a large kitchen when I moved in with my wife, I rebuilt her she'd on the side patio of the house and kept extending the roof till I had a smoking area(I still smoked back then) built with a sitting area fir me and the wife with a 125cm flat TV to watch KZbin and Sports. In newer American homes the laundry room is on the same floor as the bedrooms because the bedrooms are where the clothes are stored and also where you typically take off your dirty clothes. So you don't have to haul the laundry up and down the stairs.

People can get a little crazy about their lawn. We "judge" each other a lot by how kept up the lawn is. Being a desirable neighbor is partly assessed by how well you keep up the lot your house is on. Besides general cleanliness and exterior in good repair, that means regularly cut lawn, no weeds or very few, usually a rich or deep color, and edged. Bonus points for ground lights, shaped hedges, light posts, stone flower beds, or other landscape dressing. Some Americans (but far from all) also live in neighborhoods with "HOA"'s which means Home Owners Association; that is a neighborhood that as part of living there, the owner agrees that a voted upon council gets to regulate the appearance of all the homes included in the HOA; so a house that is not mowed and kept to the regulations is confronted and required to keep the agreed upon appearances for that area or their is a penalty. And some Americans choose entire cities for residence that have rules about upkeeping the yard. They choose it so that there is less "blight" (trash, overgrowth full of pests and rodents, and just general distasteful appearance) near their own homes.

This is the average size for a refrigerator/freezer in most homes. We also keep a separate freezer in the storeroom for extra stuff. We also have a general living room area, a dining room, and a breakfast room with a special sitting area near the kitchen. Many people in the US customize the rooms in their house to fit their lifestyle. Houses are generally larger in the US, so you can redesign the rooms to your style of living.

This house is in Coonectucut. I don't know where, but I'm assuming Faifield County, which is in southwestern Connecticut, and I'm sure he's located in southwestern Fairfield County, as well. That just means he lives in one of the most expensive places in the US. I know because I've lived in this area my whole life (unfortunately, we're not rich, but we get by well enough and own our home). This part of Connecticut is right over the New York line and a short train ride to Manhattan. I'm going to assume he lives in Greenwich, New Canaan, Stamford, Darien, Westport, Wilton, Weston, possibly Fairfield, maybe Norwalk. All very expensive towns/cities where if you are a family of 4 making $100,000, you are considered low income (which would be a very good salary in other areas of the US). There's a lot of money in this area and a lot of financial companies. People can commute to Manhattan easily or work in Stamford/ Greenwich, where there are plenty of high paying job opportunities.

@JohnFourtyTwo yes, there's quite a few celebrities/extremely wealthy known people who love in Connecticut. They towns they are most likely to live in are in Fairfield County especially Greenwuch, New Canaan, Westport, and a few others. I know Gene Wilder lived in Stamford when I was younger. Some of my friends used to tell me they went trick-or-treating at his house or mansion. He lived in North Stamford which is an expensive area. Down towards shippan point, which is on the water in Stamford, is another expensive area. Both have huge houses. I'm not rich. I was just born in this area. I live in a townhouse and it's plenty good enough for me.

Front room = living room. Some houses have a family room/rec room in back. Whether they primarily use the living room depends on the family. Most post-1950s houses have an "open plan" living room/dining room/kitchen: no full wall between them. We still say "living room" and "dining room" even if they're parts of the same room.

This is a pretty standard house that can be found in most places the country, but it is by no means the only size or only layout. My house is built in the 1940s, and we to have a formal dining room a breakfast nook (this is why he had a table off of the kitchen where informal/everyday meals are held.), Separate first floor laundry room (Those sometimes this is in the basement or celler, or even on the second floor), However many bedrooms one would have, same goes with bathrooms. Sitting room/formal living room, an informal living room, which generally is a bit bigger, and may be a little bit messier on a regular basis. Basement, garage (Generally between one and three cars, but two or three is the most common), workshop, large tool storage plus various areas for the home heating system/furnace/air conditioning, hot water, heater tank, well tank (one out of every two homes in the United States is on a private well.).. and in more and more cases, the basement is finished, so it could be additional bedrooms, family rooms, in-home movie theaters, and in some cases an area is closed off for a wine cellar or a Home bar for those more inclined to drink alcoholic beverages. I’ve owned three homes, no two were alike, they were all very different in size, but as an example, they all had a formal dining room. They all had workshops, in some cases the garage was a separate building, and then one situation there was no garage. They all had workshops one had three floors in the cellar, one was a ranch with a finished basement, and one is a Cape Cod revival that has had two additions, Before I acquired it. Thankfully, this neighborhood has such a wide variety of homes, all built before 1960 at the latest. Thankfully, heavy concrete block, construction none of the newer quick constructed McMansions thankfully. It’s just a personal preference.

If the downstairs gets finished.. you definitely need a second bathroom.. full bath for sure if you put a bedroom down there, but at least a half bath if it's a TV room, Rec Room, Pool table, whatever he creates down there. I don't know who he is.. but I'm assuming that he's finishing the house up and down to increase the value of the house.. You never know if you need to sale the house, so always thinking resale. He does have great taste. Yes.. a lot of laundry rooms in older homes are in the basements, but many modern houses like mine has the laundry room near the garage entrance near the kitchen.. but I've seen many homes with laundry upstairs.. near the bedrooms where the laundry is produced. I'd say this is a very traditional layout.. But yet new modern home with Semi-open floor plan.

Complete nonsense. Wood constructed homes are just as sturdy as those made from brick. In some situations, such as high winds, the wood frame is better, actually. Also, that attic has a wood flor on top of the insulation. It's there, you just can't see it. It's against building codes to build without insulation.

This is definitely a well-off person. This house is much larger than most. Most average 2-3br homes are in the 1500-1800sf range. 2 bathrooms is super common, though my family of 5 prefers 3+. Most houses have a kitchen, a dining room (or built off the kitchen eating area), a living room, and then bedrooms & baths. Bigger houses have a 2nd living room usually called a family room. There are also basements, some unfinished for storage (like this guy) or sometimes a laundry room, and sometimes they finish it for another livingroom usually called a recreation room, and/or an additional bathroom and/or bedroom(s). Our "basement" is a rec room, a bathroom, a laundry area, and 2 bedrooms that we have made into our master suite + storage. The kids have 3 bedrooms and a bath upstairs. Our house is larger than most, and this particular layout is often considered a "mortgage helper" as people would normally put a kitchen in our laundry area and rent the lower suite while living in the upper. When we sell next year, that is almost surely what the new owner will do. That guy's yard is *huge*. Twice the size of ours, and we got a larger one because we have dogs, most are not that big. Most are 1/3 or less that size. We don't even have a garage, but we do have a workshop, a huge shed, and a green house.

This is quite the house. It's so clean and very beautiful wood and molding. He must not have little kids or much else to do besides renovate, decorate and buy furniture. Unless he hires it out, seems like he may be quite wealthy. It's not the most exquisite but it's definitely above average, I'd say upper middle class. The majority of Americans don't have that big of a back yard, although many do and it's pretty common. The open concept kitchen is very common though for newer homes in the US, but not older homes. Also having laundry on the 2nd floor is not common. Having laundry on the main floor is much more common, but also laundry in the basement is still pretty common. So in other words, houses in the US vary drastically and realistically you can probably found just about any style and version of a home here that you can imagine. There are plenty of homes especially in Iowa and MN that are very German and Swedish for example because they settled the area. But then you go to the southwest and there are may stucco homes that are completely the opposite of this, much more native American and Mexican in nature.
