Re 8:15, that's what I think, too. It is dangerous. The fans not only have to worry about baseballs zooming in at high speed, but also those closest to 1st base have to worry about wood pieces when a bat has splintered.

“Between home runs, foul balls, players tossing them into the stands to fans, batting practice, and balls that hit the dirt, major league ball teams go through a whole lot of baseballs. In fact, the life expectancy of a baseball during a game these days is often just two pitches. Also keep in mind that once a baseball is removed from the game it never returns. These days these days any baseball that touches a dirt surface is pretty much immediately thrown out of play. Some of those balls are then used for batting practice and some are shipped to minor league teams. Of course the actual number of baseballs used each game will vary throughout each game of a season. Here is what I found regarding the overall average of baseballs used each season. According to a MLB equipment manager, an average of 8 to 10 dozen baseballs are used each game. Baseballs cost about $6 each including shipping. So, ten dozen baseballs costs about $720 per home game per team. Do some additional math and that means major league baseball spends five to five and a half million dollars each season on baseballs alone.” - Ask Evan, Fox43

Did a Google search on this the equipment manager for the Minnesota Twins says that on average they will go through 100 balls a game. As for giving the balls away pretty cheap publicity for the team.

@pushpak excellent post. Covered just about everything. For a little more context, whenever a ball is hit the ball will have slight or minor imperfections to the ball. Dents, dimples, etc. These imperfections can cause the normal rotation of the ball leaving the pitchers hand to change and make the pitch location intended by the pitcher less accurate. A ball hitting the dirt can cause scuffing on the surface of the ball and can actually benefit the pitcher as the ball becomes easier to grasp (There are cases of pitchers being caught with nail files or pieces of sandpaper trying to intentionally scuff the ball).

The ball girls are there to protect the crowd from hard line drives that are particularly dangerous where the crowd seats curls back to face the home plate. They used to just have ball boys, then the teams opened it up to the girls. The girls were such a hit that more and more teams added them. Each game in major league baseball, the umpires prepare about 100 - 200 balls. The balls are weighed and rubbed down to so they are ready for action. Players foul off a lot of balls into the crowd. Some balls get scuffed and dirty and harder for batters to see so they have to be replaced. In most games they'll use between 50 and 75 balls.

8:50 Around 110 baseballs are used in an average MLB game. The ball is replaced with a new one each time it touches anything other than the pitcher and catcher's hand/glove. The pitcher can also request that the ball be replaced if he doesn't like the current one for some reason.

You are right about it being dangerous down the 1st and 3rd base lines. People have been seriously injured or even killed getting hit by foul balls. I think there will be netting up down the lines this season at most stadiums.

Not only balls but also wood pieces from splintered bats depending on what wood was used to make them. I don't think children should be allowed to sit that close unless safety netting is put up.

@@tracypaxton1054 Hell, whole bats have been launched into the stands. Many times! To any non-baseball fans reading this; some hitters lose their grip on a hard swing, and just lose the bat which sometimes flies into the crowd.

It was funny when you said “it could be dangerous down there“ . That’s the point. The girls are there to protect the spectators. But because of insurance reasons ball parks are going to begin to put netting all the way down the line instead of just behind the plate.

In the MLB, about 100 balls are used each game. That sounds crazy, but it's true. MLB players are very particular. Any time the ball hits the dirt, they toss it out and put a new ball in the game. And fans get to keep balls when they are hit into the stands. College teams use less balls, but fans still get to keep them if they're hit into the stands. In high school and below, you generally have to return the balls. Someone will come get them. They have a rotation of probably 10 balls for a game for high school and below.

The league had to install netting because some fans were seriously hurt by foul balls. Now the ball girls are no longer needed. The average baseball game uses around 75-100 balls. Anytime they get scuffed they’re taken out of the game for the players safety.

For some teams, the ball boys and the bat boys, do much more than you see in this video. They will have a lot of tasks to complete for the players and their uniforms. Generally, they are about 15-16 years old. So having young teen girls working in a clubhouse full of adult male players (often naked) is simply not deemed appropriate. So no ballgirls for those teams. As to those guys in red that weren’t going for the ball, well that’s just not their job. They are like stadium security/ushers. Notice they don’t wear baseball gloves. That’s what the girls or boys are there for.

Ball girls are always college or high school soft ball players. Softball is the easy version of baseball, with a larger, softer ball, which is pitched underhand rather than overhand, there is no base stealing, and games are seven rather than nine innings long.

Women's baseball never really caught on in the US. Instead, women play a game called softball, which is sort of a variation of baseball. Unfortunately, I don't find softball interesting to watch, and women are clearly perfectly capable of playing baseball. It's a shame it never developed.
@susanmaggiora48004 жыл бұрын
