The pattern to get to "thunk" is mirroring "stink, stank, stunk" and goes "think, thank, thunk" even though it's not generally considered correct grammar. We use think and thought. However, thunk can be used colloquially as I way to demonstrate your cognitive abilities, somewhat facetiously. Generally, thunk is used as onamatopia to represent something hard dropping onto another hard surface.

As for the spider, a "yarn" is commonly a story, or tale, in English. Spinning a yarn is like telling lies or stories. An old yarn is like an "old wive's tale."

I recently learned a German saying- Alles hat ein Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei. It means everything must end. It took me a while to understand the German meaning but I giggled when I realized what it meant. =)

Can one truly get out of their comfort zone if leaving your comfort zone is in your comfort zone? I like these videos. I took German in school and at University, but I only hear people speak German occasionally. I usually am lost even though I am hearing something I already learned. I like this because I can keep German in my mind. Odd story: While at University, I heard that a person can learn a language faster if they immerse themselves in that language, so I tried it. I spent 2 hours with only German; unfortunately, the only thing that happened is that I forgot how to speak or understand English for 20 minutes, and I am a native English speaker.

I can see why you made the spider connection with "spinne." In English the exact same word would be used to describe a spider "spinning" its web, and an old fashioned homemaker from the year 1750 "spinning" yarn on a wheel to make clothing. Thanks for a fun video!

"Thunk" was also my problem... This challenge: "Fred fütterte Ted mit Brot und Fred fütterte Ted mit Brot." And everybody: Always have in mind that nouns are written with a capital letter in German. That's why "spinne" can't mean spider but means "to spin" in 1st person singular. --> Ich spinne. An explanation about the origin can be found here: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinnen_(Umgangssprache) Unfortunately it is only available in German. Short: In the end it seems not really clear what the origin is and why it is used in German to say "I can't believe what you're telling me." or "I believe I am dreaming.". At least to me it stays unclear after reading the article.

Ich verstehe nur Bahnhof (I don't undertand sh** ?) Entschuldigung, aber mein Englisch ist unter alle Schweine (My english is bad) Ich glaube eine Spinne (i literally have NO idea for this one) ... I'll stop for now lol... I have much to do (like... learning German) Thanks for this video !!

I have been learning German for the past few years and I thought that "du spinnst total" meant "you are completely crazy". That's what I was able to get out of the context of the conversations I have been part of. I didn't know it was an expression either, I just thought that the verb happened to be unrelated to the noun spider.

"The devil I will do" is very similar to English "the hell I will" when someone wants you to do something that you have no intention of doing.

It isn't the names or other common subjects in their words they've shared with other areas, if it isn't your first language it's the spelling, it's hard to know which letters are the silent ones in their longer words, or any of the short words that aren't spelled like an English word the vowel sounds aren't always easy to guess.
