It must be in the blood lines, because my German Shepherd would always look to me for commands, and that was at day one. I would walk him, and he'd always be looking up at me for instructions. What a good boy he was, he was so easy to train! I took him to dog school with other dogs, and he was not distracted at all. He knew all the words, sit, stay, heal, shake, down, and it was so natural for him.

Brandon mcmillan is the most gentle, thorough and effective dog i've ever encountered. My friend and i love the dog show and never miss it. So many times we've shed a tear of happiness just seeing a dog's life changed forever when proper training is applied and they go on to live their lives the way they should. I have brandon's book kzbin.infoUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq in two formats. Not only the paperback version but also the kindle version to refer to when i don't have the paperback along with me. I have used his methods with my cavalier kc spaniel and turned a non-disciplined furbaby into a companion who has traveled thousands of miles with us across the country. He is a near perfect dog thanks to brandon's methods. I don't get one cent of kickback for recommending brandon but i do it because i love dogs. They deserve to be given a chance. Brandon's mission in life - to rescue dogs and place them in a forever, happy home - is very dear to my heart. I recommend his methods to anyone who has a dog - young or old. I've seen him take even old dogs and teach them. Brandon was an animal trainer before his current mission. His parents were animal trainers. His methods are the best i've ever found. Your furbaby will thank you for spending the money on this book. Don't hesitate - it is worth every cent.

They're brilliant dogs, smart as border collies, but they're not for the faint of heart or owners that aren't fully committed. They take a lot of work, but if you're dedicated, and learn about the breed, they're the best dog to have around you. I've had 4 of them in my lifetime and through experience can tell you that they're so clever, and if trained well they don't even need a leash. Plus, they'll never let an uninvited stranger into your house.

@@sarebearxo Yes. Some Cech/Dutch working line German Shepherd Dogs would not be a good starter shepherd. Their lines are bred hard for work (police, security, PP, military). But other than that, being a strong, confident and loving presence is all a GSD needs....well training, consistency (everyone in the family on board), and socializing them early and often is needed too.

I just adopted a 1 year old German Shepherd husky mix today and so far he is VERY smart and listens well, he just has so much energy when it's time for bed, I assume he needs more exercise and play time. He'll wanna play at 2am lol I thought about taking him for walks around the park, he's not friendly with other dogs and that's what I get worried about but in my experience with dogs it's all about the energy you as a human put out. I'm used to pit bulls so having a German Shepherd is new to me

I'm a GSD owner that has had my dog through all of the AKC certifications. I love that dog more than you could imagine. She is a model of discipline, but she's still a dog. The GSD dogs are incredibly intelligent. I have to watch my habits around the house so that she doesn't catch on to my meals, etc. My girl can predict my behavior. It is stunning what she catches on to. She stands between anything she perceives as a threat (e.g. neighbors walking) and covers my shins between me and her perceived thread, walking sideways.

What's matters the most is socializing the young dog to anything and everything. We start at 10 weeks, take the dog everywhere. We will take the pups and set by the interstate, go in stores, give baths, clean ears, brush teeth, cut nails, loud noises, conveyor-belts, slick floors, being lifted, boxes, stairs, people, other dogs, anything and everything. If you have a dog that is NOT well socialized, you will never reach the full potential of the dog. Then we start training at 12 weeks. Starting training early you must have a "clear-headed, sound dog" to start with. You also must not pressure the young dog too much, there's a fine line. If you cross the line your dog will have issues, and most dogs don't recover 100%! I see a lot of people who train with food. Using food is a fast way to train and works. We found praising the dog when he does right, works better than food. Dogs want to please their handler more than anything in the world! When they do an action you want them to do, "Praise them, pet them act like a fool, get loud and praise them!" As a police handler, we can't use food at all, because in court the defense will say the dog alerted to food instead of the drugs! That's 110% not true, we don't use food in training so it's an issue we don't have to deal with! Great video, and a beautiful dog! If you want a good dog, you must socialize them, and start training early like in this video! You will love your dog even more if he/she is trained, and the dog loves it!

Thank you. My mom saved a German Shepard puppy when he had Parvo. She worked very hard to keep him alive and I'm happy to say that he is a lot to this day. Though now that he is much much bigger he needs more training that my mother was expecting. So I'm trying to come in and be the person who trained him while he is just over a year old. It's hard because he has so much energy and I try my best to give him as much attention and stimulation as I can but so very hard without neutering him.

Here I am almost 74 yrs. old with MS, COPD w/Emphysema and I now have a 5 month old German Shepherd X Border Collie that I'm in the process of training to help me with balance, stairs, etc. He was a SNAP to Obedience train and boy does he have a nose on him😂. I adore him💞🐾🐾 , his intelligence is mind-blowing, so eager to work and learn. I play hide and seek games with him (hiding certain toys plus treats and then ask him to "seek") and he has, so far, found everything. We start this outside next week, we'll see how he does, alot of rabbits, squirels, birds, etc. for distractions, but I have all the faith in his abilities.

if you live with GSDs as I have for 40 years, you see how the pack, which you are a part of, begins teaching the pups very early on. do not wait. take an obedience class. the class is for you, not the pup. Every GSD needs you to know the basics so you can continue what mom started. amazing ball drive helps to achieve goals without food rewards.

My German Shepherd is 8 weeks old, Ive had him for 3 days and i can already tell hes a genius since he does his business when i put him on the chuck, though still a few accidents but he's learning quickly, i only had him for 3 days. So is it good to start teaching him tricks right now?

Sorry for the late response. To any who see this now, 8 weeks is about the best age to start training your puppy. Don't teach any parlor tricks but do teach attention and keep him/her on a leash for a while training until they stay with you and are focused. Potty training, no pulling, and no more biting is what you want to aim for.

Encourage not only breeders aiming for performance and work... But also pups meant for pets only. I admire those aimed at health and maintaining the GSD as a working dog. It's as Max Von Stephanitz, the breed founder, would have wanted it. But the fact is... Many ppl want a GSD for a pet. Solely. Breeders must now start aiming for not only healthy working stock... But calm, more neutral pet personalities~ 💕

I'm on to my second GSD the last one past away 9 months ago at 9 years old of cancer. Max, the 10 week old "male" pup is a lot more demanding and diffidently head strong but he has now learnt to sit, stay, down, come etc. The potty at night around 3 am can be a bit of a bummer but that's all expected. Looking forward to when I can take him out after his second lot of vaccinations.

Put his fav. Treat down towards his front feet, (while he is sitting) and say (or however you want to ) down while gently pressing his head and\or shoulders down. Remember to be patient, and if you have to, reward for any bit of lowering, I would also recommend only treat every so often, so your not a treat dispenser, make it a game!

I recently adopted a German shepherd of 8 months old. She is quite obedient but pulls dreadfully on the leach and I'm 69 with back problems,do I'm dreading training her as she is extremely strong. She also digs up the soil in all of my pots and has even pooped on the carpet 🤦🏻‍♀️😭. But apart from that she is totally adorabile and very intelligent. She is my third German shepherd and I love them to bits.

Years ago, approx. 30, I trained and showed obedience. I never heard that you can't train your dog before six months. I did hear start early, but don't expect too much before 6 months. It was a reference of time based around development and varied according to breed, with some breeds having a short attention span before reaching 6mos. Guess you just made liars out of them. God only knows what caused me to train Springer Spaniels in obedience. Although I would start training before six months, they seemed to become a different dog around six months with their focus increasing 10 fold.

Vanetta Mosetta Food, toys, affection, walks, training, motivation, socialisation, attention. That’s basically it. I make it sound easy, and it is if you are dedicated yourself. Imagine the dog as a mirror of its owner. Show some dedication and give it time, and the dog will comply as shown in the video.

Here guys: Put quite a few tidbits of the tastiest thing possible in your pocket (that your dog loves the most, like, goes CRAZY over). Go to an area in your house that you can start out some small fetch. Now, start getting your pup going by giving affection/playing/etc... Once your puppy is in high-drive/excited, throw the ball for him, and watch where he goes after he takes it. DONT chase him, DON'T run after him, just do this a couple tines and see where he takes the ball to and plops down/holds it at. Now that you know where he goes to as his default "play place", pull out another ball and gain his attention with it. Once he's come over to you and gets excited, toss the ball to an area that'll give you time to work your way over to that "play place" area and pick up the 1st ball before he gets back. When he comes back to that play place area with ball #2, you should already have the #1 ball in hand. Show him Ball #1, get him excited, and toss it, and repeat these steps. Now, after a while of doing this, get rid of one of the balls, and when he brings the ball back to you, immediately have one of those tidbits of meat (or w/e) in your hand, and then offer it to him. Once he drops the ball because he's paying attention to the treat, pick up the ball, then congratulate him with your "good words/marker word/or wherever you normally say), and then reward him with the small treat once you have the ball. Once the treat is scarfed down, get his interest on the ball again. Get him excited, then toss it. Once he Comes back, pull out the treat, and repeat the steps again. When you play fetch, ONLY play it this way for a little while (week or so). Then, week 2, move a little away from the "play space" and if he doesn't bring the ball to you (looking for the treat), then you need to rewind and go back to the "play space" and keep repeating the first steps to ensure he's made the connection. If he DOES bring the ball to you, that means he's learning that when he brings something back to you, he gets the treat. Continue gradually getting further and further away from the play space for the ball retrieval. Once he's reliably bringing back the ball and dropping it for the treat no matter what where you're at inside with no distractions, start to take the game outside in smaller areas and repeat. Gradually introduce more distractions, busier places, and only reward for success and NO reward when a distraction overrides him performing the task (SUPER reward though if you notice him ALMOST give in to a distraction but ultimately ignoring it in favor of finishing the task.) Then, once he's got it down pat, slowly stop giving him treats every single time and, instead, just instantly grab the ball and throw it for him. At first, start reducing the treats by giving a treat every other retrieval, then every other other retrieval, and so on, until your no longer rewarding him with treats, but instead rewarding him with playing the game. :) Another thing: pull out the tennis balls ONLY when YOU decide to play fetch. Don't just leave them out at all times for him to play with at his leisure. This will make the balls have a lot higher value and be more exiting. This will allow you to use "fetch" as a reward in the future for training purpose, due to the high value they have on the tennis balls (for dogs with decent drive). So, don't leave balls out for him all the time/unlimited access, because then they lose their "appeal" after a while because they're nothing new or "special" to them then. :) *NOTE: I'm not affiliated with Unleashed K9 or etc (although I think they're great trainers down there in Columbus), and the reason I used this method as the one I explained, is because it is safe for the "Novice DIY at home trainer" to do, without fear of anything going wrong. Ie- You're not gonna mess your dog up if you attempt this method but do it incorrectly. There's MANY ways to introduce fetch and train retrievals, such as using eCollars, +R/-P, balanced approaches, and many others. But, I didn't feel right trying to spell out how to do any of those because you CAN mess your dog up badly if you screw up those methods. hehe (psychologically, physically, or put them into avoidance or etc). So, hopefully this helps some of you that'd like to try your hand at teaching your dog retreival work without fear of messing up their temperament, instilling fear into them, etc.) PSS: If your dog avoids the "play space" when you're near it, then that means they are either A) showing avoidance, or, B)Trying to play the "keep away" game because someone already accidentally reinforced how fun the "keep away game" is by running after the dog when trying to get the dog to retrieve earlier on in life, hehe. If "A" is the issue, then consult a local professional to work through that issue. If "B" is the issue, then work that out by playing "tug" with your dog and teaching him to "out/release" the tug, and everytime he successfully releases, immediately reward him by giving it back (this shows the dog that when you take away a toy, they'll get it right back, so they won't think they'll heave to play "keep away" to have fun.) Ie- when a pup steals your shoe and you run after him and take it away, he will begin to associate you taking things from him with "the fun stopped". Which, turns into a lifelong "I gotta keep this thing I just picked up away from master as long as I can, to have as much fun as possible before master takes it away for good" kinda mentality. (don't worry, we've all been there, lol). If puppy takes something and runs off with it, instead you should take a toy to them, and once they release the "no no" item, give them the "yes yes" item to play with/chew on. This way, they'll associate you taking things as "no big deal, because I still get something cool in return". :)

guest user there are many tools being used in the training process. The best thing to do is to not focus on the tools in training but focus on the dog and the training method itself. 2 simple questions to ask yourself when you’re looking at a dog being trained. 1. Is the training working yes or no? 2. Are the results desired and is the dog happy and on board with this training? Never mind the tools just look at the dogs. That’s the tell tail of what’s good and not good training. As you can see great progress and learning you also see a dog that is very happy! Why does it matter about what tools are being used when the results are really good.
