The Germans are 'famous' for their direct way of speaking even in the german speaking community. As an example, A Swiss in a Café in Germany get ask by the waiter: "Is there anything else you want to order?" The answer of the Swiss often could be something like: "Yeah... Maybe a coffee..." which leads to the confused question of the waiter: "What maybe? do want a coffee or not?"
@DeanaandPhil5 жыл бұрын
Ahh Thanks! That's a better example! I couldn't think of one on the spot, but answering questions directly are good examples! When someone asks, "Do you want to meet up for lunch tomorrow?" Phil would say "yes" or "no" while I would say "That sounds nice!" or "I don't think I can." My friends in the USA would know that I'm agreeing or disagreeing, but there could be some confusion depending on one's normal speaking culture. In the Southeast USA, we were taught that declining "indirectly" was more polite, so it's become a habit. I think a lot of the USA does that too. - Deana 😊
@MrBjornlange5 жыл бұрын
Germanic languages typically are more “straight to the point”. And yes the Nordic languages are classified as Germanic even though no German would understand neither Danish, Norwegian or Swedish. We also tend to speak in “absolutes” rather than questions. EG “I want a fork”. Rather than “could You please vand me a fork”. The first being much more effeciant, although not very polite, whereas the second (polite) question doesn’t actually guarantee You Will be getting a fork. And don’t Getafe me started on all the archaic titulations in German business corespondance. But one thing the german language has going for it (and we Scandinavians lost over time) is the verb at end of a sentence. Meaning You actually have to let the speaker finish his or her sentence before vocalising your own oppinion. (written on iPad with Danish spelling correction)
@tsfbaf3035 жыл бұрын

Mark Tipping is a way to supplement the waiters and waitresses who are working. Some waiters/waitresses here get paid a measly $2.50 an hour so tipping is a way to help them and say “hey we appreciate you!” The reason they get paid so little is to make food cost less. The shops thing is simple really. Even though there are those who are genuinely being kind in saying hello, when going into a nice store the assistants work on commission and are simply wanting your business. Sorry, I will answer your question in german and add a improved google-translation ;) 1. ;) 6. Identität verstecken: Ich bin ein Mensch vom Planeten Erde. Warum soll ich das verstecken? 1. Price / performance ratio: Oh yes, at least for me that is also typical to pay attention at. Whereby I do not only pay attention to quantity or features but also to longevity, fair production and fair trade, environmental friendliness, repair possibilities etc. So it can take quite some time until I have decided on a product. And sometimes I come to these considerations on the fact that I actually do not need that at all and then I buy nothing. :D 2. Hidden extra costs: Also, I'm totally on Phil's side. It is simply attempted fraud in my eyes, to advertise cheap prices and then still this and that and more to count on it. Give the final price, what you do with it then, I do not care. Unfortunately, this bad habit comes slowly to Germany and that excites me. Fortunately, we have some consumer protection organizations, which then go to court. :D 3. Directness: I would just call it honesty. Superficial small talk or courtesy lies are just disgusting, although sometimes I do that to just have my rest. But I hate it, really. Meanwhile, I try to express my thoughts and feelings whenever it is not completely inappropriate. Sometimes it is very difficult and I feel somehow naked. After that, it is actually always a good feeling and the relationship with the respective interlocutor comes to a completely higher, more personal level. On the Internet, I would advise against complete directness and openness. ;) 4. Health System: No comment except ... if I'm sick, then I'm sick and then I should be able to go to a doctor without having to reserve a bed under the next bridge. That should be a human right. 5. Efficiency thinking: Again, I'm just like Phil, maybe even more extreme. This mindset has cost me even 2-3 jobs, because I mentioned inefficiency in the company and made suggestions for improvement. My bosses were convinced that everything was perfect ... Well, now their companies are broke. Which certainly was not due to the inefficiency. Definitely not. ;) 6. Hide identity: I am a human being from planet earth. Why should I hide this?

It really is like someone's hobby to go to the doctor or call ambulances ^^

We have the "price-perfomance-ratio" in Portugal too. "Relação qualidade-preço" :)

I love this video. But I laughed the hardest when the ad cut him off mid-rant about pricing. Timing 10/10
