A look at one of the Kraftform stainless screwdriver sets from Wera. Probably one of the finest set of screwdrivers I have owned.

In my experience.... nothing beats PB Swiss!!!!!! I bought a set 10 years ago and also Allen keys!!! They have got their shit sorted out when it comes to metallurgy!!! They don't wear, bend or break like any other brand I've ever used!!! They are definitely worth the money!!!

I absolutely love these. My only wish was that they came in a molded or foam tool box tray. Also, they do have a PH2 8" blade available in this series.

Love your detailed and scientifically based evaluation. If nothing else I examine all tools differently and closer today. On the German-centic scope. I believe I understand the reasons, but wish you would expand your analysis to a wider range of country of origin. Prehaps a new series to include North American, Japanese and even exceptional Asia tool. As a example ""Engineer"" a Japanese Manufacturer makes a line Screw extracting Pliers that are very interesting! I would also appreciate comparisons and analysis of US manufactured products using your analysis skills.

Hey, how about testing the "gripping power " of the lasercuts by attaching a screw to a side of a board/plate (wood or plastic with low weight, not too large to reduce the initial friction) that you then add weight after weight to. Jam the driver into the slot, start pulling and see when the driver "let go"? Be sure to use a new screw for each tool and possible every 2-3 weight added, the head may wear and affect the results. Or, if you have access to a force meter that could probably quickly and easy tell how much (in newtons so probably not directly useful though) the lasercuts really helps. Just attach the screw to the meter and start pulling :)

I've been working on designing a test fixture to scientifically test each type/brand of driver bits. I already have a motor that I can use, but I still need to procure a load cell to measure clamping force. There are types of load cells known as "load cell washers" that are specifically designed to measure bolt clamping force. I could also use a rotary torque transducer but those are ultra expensive compared to load cells. The idea is to tightening the fastener until it cams out and see how much clamping force it transferred. From the research I have seen, the biggest problem that people run into with these test fixtures is the bits actually breaking due to the superhuman forces that a motor can produce. Using impact bits should help avoid this. I don't really have timetable on getting the fixture designed built, other stuff seems to come up and I forget.

That was interesting, I did not know the laser etching added hardness. The box my set came in was not like yours, mine came in a light and dark grey box that has a window in it
@GermanToolReviews
@GermanToolReviews 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I believe there is a more retail friendly version of most of their sets that does have a plastic window. It is some variation in the part number, but those sets are generally a couple bucks more than the sets without them. As for the hardness, there is a note in the patent that the reason for the hardening is to avoid premature wear of the ribs. Without the hardening the ribs would disappear quite fast.

These come insulated too. Regardless these stainless drivers are like surgeons scalpels, but for craft men. According to another video the camout torque is really high, only beat by diamond coat tips.

I love my Wera insulated drivers, the laser etched tip really makes a difference and I wouldn't be surprised if it became a standard in screwdrivers in the future, if the patent is allowed to expire. Out of curiosity, what is your profession? We have a lot of the same tools.

I have the classic black wera handles the chisel drivers and lazer tips. They are my favorite drivers but the bi colored handles are not that durable. the oval colors on handles are pads and after exposing mine to every lube spray grease and fluid used on this earth the edges of pads are separating from handle. I will get more time out of them but I am disappointed the steel is lasting longer than plastic handle. I would have been just fine with wera using a one piece molded handle and I will never buy a screw driver with grip pads again.

Good afternoon GTR (I'm not aware how you like to be named) I have found your reviews endless fascinating the last few weeks, by far the best for me on KZbin. I'm in the process of filling out my first tool cabinet with nice tools and have become slightly obsessed. I'm torn between the chisel drivers and the lasertip Kraftform screwdriver sets. I primarily work on my motorcycles so carborators and engines will be the main use for the screwdrivers I buy. A pet peeve of mine is the taper on screwdrivers especially the lowest quality options available. I live with friends who for sure won't respect my tools to the same extent as I do, because of this I think the chisel drivers could be the most appropriate since every flat head becomes a pry bar. Since you have possed the lasertips for a year and a half now do you think it is a trait which makes them essential much like the hex plus profile? If you could point me towards any one option I would greatly appreciate it. Have a great weekend Regards Alexander

By far the beefiest screwdrivers I have seen are the Wiha Extra Heavy Duty Versions. If you are working with oil and grease then I would get the Microfinish handle. Check out Wiha P/N 53398 for a set of those. If you are set on getting Wera ones then probably the chisel drivers would be better if you think they are going to get alot of abuse. The normal wear drivers are not designed to be hit with a hammer. The laser tips really only seem helpful with Philips screws that have been damaged. The laser etching does eventually wear away but it takes some time. If you want a more budget friendly set then check out the Felo Wooden Handle Screwdrivers

German Tool Reviews I've had a look and Wera chisel drivers are the cheapest of the striking cap screwdrivers from the options you mentioned (I'm in the UK where they cost £23 Vs around $50 for you) I'm going to buy a single Felo & Wera ph1/2 to see which I prefer as they are of a similar level. I see what you mean regarding the Wiha micro finish handled heavy duty options. They definitely appear to the strongest design sadly they are 3x the cost for me so not really viable as a hobiest.

Hi Darren. If you don't need the stainless version, but want the laser tips, then I would recommend the Wera 105650 (KC Tool Link: bit.ly/2p4DSWW) that includes the most common Slotted and Philips sizes along with the plastic holder. If it is a set that you don't plan on using a lot and don't want to pay the premium for the laser tips, then I would get the Wera 031280 (KC Tool Link: bit.ly/2oViO8r) which is around half the price. If you want a more comprehensive set then take a look at the Wera 105630 (KC Tool Link: bit.ly/2p4JMYh), which includes Pozidrive and common Torx drivers.

I really like to see US manufactures making good tools but the whole "Name Price" that comes with them is ridiculous; ie. SnapOn, S-K, MAC, etc. My background in Engineering and manufacturing has shown me that there is no reason US manufactures cannot make tools equal to Wiha, Wera, etc. and be price competitive. They don't need to surcharge for a name. (I know Snapon for instance offers financing so new mechanics usually start with a bunch of their tools just to start working) Craftsman used to be the "Goto" brand at one time. They sourced most hand tools from USA and some from Japan... but that started to change. Craftman's warranty however, even today is the best and most convenient. We used to use and misuse the tools to get the job done. If they broke we just stopped by a Sears and exchanged the broken tools for new ones. No questions asked. Now I find myself looking at and buying German made tools more often. Warranties are not bad and the tools are made very well at a reasonable price. Some tools, like a deadblow soft hammer for instance is just that; a thing to beat on something else. For that a cheap Harbor Freight is just fine.
